    Hi!

I am moving to Deyang tomorrow to teach English for the next academic year.

I’ve had a look around the Internet and I can’t find any Deyang expat groups. I was wondering if anyone here lived in Deyang but used this forum to socialize and cmmunicate with other expats?

I am looking to get a good Chinese teacher ASAP. I am also interested in having a look round Chengdu and the Sichuan countryside.

I am 26 and am British.

    Cheers,

    Joe

    Hi Joe,

I haven’t ever met an expat who lives in Deyang (I’ve met a few living in Mianyang, but I don’t know any that have lived there for more than a few years). Perhaps someone in Deyang will find this thread – I imagine there can’t be many foreigners living in Deyang!

I think Deyang is Sichuan’s 2nd largest city? like almost 4 million people? Surely has some expats….

Then again, never been there. No idea why. It must be a proper city with that population!

Mianyang is second biggest after Chengdu, if you don’t include Chongqing of course. Deyang is pretty big in terms of population, there are a lot of satellite cities around Deyang which people usually just describe as Deyang. I’ve been there a few times but have never seen a foreigner walking around there or anything. I bet there are a handful but I would imagine it’s a very small community. Mianyang surely has more foreigners, some large Chinese companies are headquartered there (Changhong is one, if I’m not mistaken).

wow, Charlie, you’re really know chengdu. all you said is correct. I’ve been deyang many times and also never seen a foreiger there.

Mianyang is the second city after chengdu, and there’re many large international companies, like Lafarg. And a university is located mianyang. so there’re some foreigener in Mianyang.

I’m going to explain what my experience was like in that city. It looks great. And it’s fairly developed. However. I would never want to live there again. As a foreigner, it’s difficult to socialise much. I find if you are a foreign male and you want to make friends, you may be able to,do so. With other local guys. But bear in mind, if any chinese girl in Deyang is seen with a foreigner. People will hate her and gossip about her. Here’s my story.

I had a girlfriend from Deyang. I didn’t live there yet. I’d go to visit her. And people would look at her with hateful expressions. I would ask her why they look at her like that. She told me it’s cause she’s with me. Eventually we broke up. Then Shortly after my company moved me to Deyang to teach. I met another girl. We dated for a short while. People looked at her the same way. She moved to Beijing for a short while. After I moved back to Chengdu, she moved to Chengdu as well. And it was easier for us to be together.

During my time in Deyang. I remember beeting two girls at the public square close to Mc Donalds. They were nice. They invited me to dinner. I went. While we were talking, two guys approached us. One talked to me, the other talked to the two girls. I only remember the guy as “Jason”. Later they asked us go back with them to the sports clothing store the two guys worked at. So we did. Later we decided all of us would go to KTV on friday night. I agreed. Friday afternoon. I text Jason. He doesn’t respond. I text the girls. They sayd “Sorry we’re busy”. So nothing happened that night. Monday I go see Jason. He told me they all went out on Friday night. I asked why they didn’t call me. He said he had to get back to work and I had to leave. I text Jason later and I told him I disliked the city. Then he asks me “Is that cause you don’t have any friends?”. It was evident to me by that point the two guys approached us so they could come in between me and the two girls. I thought about texting Jason and saying “Those two girls told me everything you said”. But I didn’t because if I am right and I convince him of that, well I could have a mob outside my front door the following morning ready to put me in a hospital. To avoid trouble I left these proud nationalists alone.

Two weeks later, A female friend from Chengdu comes to visit me. I show her around Deyang. While walking around minding our own business, some guy comes out of nowhere and starts pushing me around. Telling me to get away from her. And the next thing I knew alot more people started approaching me. The girl told me to run. So I did. They ran after me, one shouted “Revenge for the chinese people”. I saw a cop. Ran towards him. They all backed off. The girl explained everything to the cop to keep me out of trouble. She went right away back to Chengdu. I contacted my recruiter who I was working for and told them to get me out of this city now.

I find this hard to believe, not saying it is not true. But this is so against all my own experiences. In China in general I never encountered this and also not in Deyang.

I attended a friends wedding there and know a couple foreigners that own a cafe/bar on wenmiao street in Deyang.

Maybe it is just with mixed couples. But in the 5 days I spend there with a local I did not have any of these encounters or even a hint of that…

Me neither. If Chinese guys are dogging you and stealing your women in Deyang, something is wrong. Foreigners are like celebrities in Deyang. It’s ridiculous, but that is the situation in small towns.

It sounds like these issues could be unrelated to Deyang. If people disrespect you like that, cut them out of your life and find new friends. Texting him and saying you dislike Deyang is asking for more trouble and drama, just break contact.

For a Chinese girl to be with a foreigner requires some independence on her part. She has to be capable of dealing with some people who might be close-minded, jealous, or just bitter about her being with a foreigner. I think you’ll find this to be fact no matter where in China you are, although it is more pronounced in places with a very small foreigner population, like Deyang. If you want to be in a more open-minded and worldly place, get out of Deyang.

I was recently offered a free studio space out in Deyang, which for the time being I have declined on account of the distance. Though I didn’t get to see too much of the area, it strikes me as a laid back place, and I was met with nothing but curiosity in the short time I was there. When the fast train between Chengdu & Deyang gets going I’ll definitely be heading back out there.

Is martybe on the forum? He did indeed take a space at what will be a new artist’s village, and is spending time out there at the moment. He’d have some worthwhile insight I’m sure, so long as he’s not stealing Chinese women away from village folk.
