Mopeds in Chengdu

I’m currently living in Shuangliu and am thinking about getting a moped to get from place to place. It’s just kind of a pain to take a taxi to the metro and the metro in each time (not to mention really expensive). So my question is: does anyone have any experience buying a moped here in china? Do you need a license or need to get the moped registered? I’ve seen mopeds with license plates so I’m not sure the process here.

Gas powered vehicles require a license and plates but electric do not, so I would advise getting an electric scooter. That is what most locals do. Inside the city if you drive a gas powered bike you run the risk of getting pulled over by police if you do not have the proper credentials – license plate and drivers license. The rules might not be so tough in Shuangliu for gas powered bikes but in Chengdu you are definitely taking a risk. Good luck!
