    Hi guys

I will be visiting Chengu 4 days with a friend in 2 weeks (3 guys).

i am looking for tips to go out (bars, good restaurants, clubs?) and eventually tips on what the locals like to viait in the city. No too touristy place preferred, good vibes to meet people in a laid back atmosphere. Our hotel will be in the center of the city.

    any tips welcome 🙂

    thank you !

I would advise browsing around Chengdu Places and see what strikes you. Chengdu is a big city, there are a lot of options.

Hi do you need a local tour guide or I would say translator ? I can give advice and take you around in the city and somewhere outside the city within 1 hour drive based on your needs, like hugging the panda l0l. In the city we can use subway or bike, and outside the city we can use my car. The rate is 150USD a day including transportation. I pay my own food. If you are interested, please add my wechat through 156954457.

And if you want a laid back atmosphere, I would like to recommend you just stay in the People’s Park and drink a cup of tea, and relax and watch the local people for a whole day ! And there are some nice bars in Yulin of Wuhou District. Also many  nice clubs and restaurants in Chengdu but it depends on what you like .

I would advise browsing around Chengdu Places

Be aware that several of the listings here are now closed.

For restaurants, if you’re visiting Chengdu and you’re not eating the local food, you’re doing it wrong. Sichuan is a major Chinese food capital with more delicious foods than you can sample in one short trip. I recommend checking out http://chengdufoodtours.com/ to experience as much of the Chengdu food scene in one day as you can. Request Anita, a local guide. She’s super delightful.

As for laid back bars, I think the best places to meet people are Berlin Haus, Jah Bar, the Underground (a popular gay bar). Other popular bars are McElroy’s Irish Pub, The Range, Beer Nest, or Dave’s Oasis (I own this bar; that’s why it’s bold. It’s probably the closest to the center of the city – TianFu Square if that’s where you’re staying, come see me and I’ll help you find what you want.).

As for clubs you can check out the LanKwaiFong area for Jellyfish 2, Cocktail Revolution for more foreigners in a typical commercial club setting, or a bunch of different Chinese clubs to experience an interesting hired Russian girls dancing on stages and Chinese people playing dice games or staring at their phones amidst loud bad techno music. Also there’s megaclub, Space, to see rich Chinese men poor beer on models with fresh plastic surgery, featuring the worst EDM played by the most famous DJs you’ve never heard of. NASA is also nearby Space and you’ll find many of the younger hip Chinese locals there.

That is true – a lot of the places have closed, actually. Everything that’s closed and listed on Chengdu Places has a notice at the top of the page which says the place is closed. If you see anything inaccurate, let me know and I’ll update it.

Commune on lingshiguanlu (领事馆路) is easily one of the busiest places with a good mix of locals and westerners. It’s also in a good area. Nearby is Beer Nest 1 (above average craft beer), McElroys (more miss than hit, but sometimes not bad), Petes Tex Mex (A restaurant, but the frozen margaritas are dreamy) and a few more places dotted around. From what I understand the Polly centre has been shut for the whole month of August because it was a drug den, so that’s out….

Sorry Chris, but I have to disagree with Jah bar and Berlin Haus….both are pretty dire IMO. Jah bar had a time when it was kinda fun, but that was many many years ago…and I just don’t get the a Berlin Haus’ appeal.

Fair enough. I like Berlin Haus for its daytime to early evening appeal. You can actually meet people and have a conversation. It has a laid back atmosphere which was what OP was asking for. Both Berlin Haus and Hakka are currently closed along with the others part of the recent crackdown.

Commune is popular because it probably has the cheapest drinks in the city (definitely at least watered down alcohol). I group it together with Savage Bar, Helen’s, Wow Bar. Usually busy, cheap fake alcohol, and awful music.

Machu Pichu 2 hasn’t been mentioned yet and that’s a bar that’s sometimes busy with lots of locals and has a regular jam session night and folk music performances. Definitely worth checking out since options are limited this summer with the crackdown going on.

Hugos is also popular among locals with a large craft beer selection.

yeah, This crackdown has shut almost everywhere. The leg and whistle has been closed aswell. Helens, Wow, Savage are all identical and pretty poor. Commune is better, and since most beer is in bottles chances are its not fake. The spirits might be fake though.

if its a nice day then shamrock has a decent outside area which is sometimes good. Blue Frog in tai koo li, although a restaurant is good for early evening drinking (happy hour 4-8).

Chengdu feels empty at the moment…quite weird

I pretty much agree with Chris. I like Dave’s Oasis and Berlin Haus. Machu Picchu 2 has good live shows, now that everything else is closed, that is a good place to go. I agree that Jah bar was much better years ago, but with everything else unavailable I think it is worth checking out. Commune I am not a fan of, I love the DIY concept but can’t stand the music in that place and it feels like I am back home in a TGI Fridays or something. It’s corny.

commune isnt great…but everything else mentioned is very hit or miss that it will have anybody in them. At least commune has people every night of the week. Machu Pichu is pretty decent on thursday for open mic night, but a,lot of foreigners arent here at the moment.

to be fair, ive only been to Berlin Haus twice and was put off by the mix of an awful beer selection and a softcore porno party.
