The Shangri-La is one of the most recent — and probably the most distinguished — Five-Star arrival in Chengdu. The hotel is world-class in every aspect, from the spacious and beautiful rooms to a spectacular multi-national buffet. The staff is attentive and the amenities match what any world traveler could wish for. This towering hotel is located right on the river and stands tall next to a stunningly ornate traditionally-styled bridge which is illuminated at night. Many of the suites at the Shangri-La feature two bathrooms and enough space to comfortably host four people. We’ve heard more than one person say that this hotel is plush enough to bear a strong resemblance to the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

The Kempinski, located in the south of the city only a short ride from the airport, has been a mainstay of luxury in Chengdu for almost a decade. When the first line of the subway is operational in March 2010, the trip from Chengdu’s airport to the Kempinski will be a cinch. And it’ll cost a pittance.
This hotel is a good option for those who want a little more Western feel than the Jinjiang but don’t want to shell out Shangri-la cash. The buffet is outstanding and if you like German food you can enjoy that along with a Paulaner beer on tap from the Kempinski’s micro-brewery to go with your meal. The rooms are appropriately swank and the staff is friendly and helpful and speaks good English. As a bonus, right next to the Kempinski (below a traffic overpass) is one of the best art markets in the Chengdu which sells calligraphy and Chinese paintings.

We’re a group of 5 westerners taking a two week program in cooking at the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine in March 2010. We would like to be near the downtown area for restaurants and activities but close to the location of the cooking school -cn you recommend anything in the less than premium category e.g. 4 stars ( 700 RMB or less per night). Boardband internet is a must and we would like a fitness center and indoor swimming pool. If anyone would like to join the cooking program in Chinese and English-let me know.

Indoor fitness and swimming pool will keep you in this range of hotels. Once you take away those two amenities, then dozens of 200 – 500 yuan hotels become options, including one I always bring people too right off of Tian Fu Plaza next to the mosque — very nice place (200 – 400 yuan). the rooms are nice, its quiet and convenient, but no swimming pool.
