CharlieKeymasterJerry’s BJJ school is definitely still around. It has grown considerably since I interviewed him, in fact. Aside from his, there are a few other BJJ training options in the city now, also (one at B-Active gym in Tongzilin which is no-gi and another nearby at a gym called Up). As for Krav Maga I haven’t heard anything, I’d be a little more surprised if that is around, but it’d be cool to see some info shared on that if anyone has it.
Muay thai: there is an S1 gym, but it is super far away, outside the city to the northwest. It is a great training facility, though. I believe there is a post about it here on the forum with more info.

nznomisParticipantHi! Keen to bump this and inquire about the options for martial arts in Chengdu – am looking at coming to China later this year to purse some study and training options are a big factor. Have been at a decent Krav Maga school at home for two years and am basically looking to keep up both stand up and ground game. Have heard Jerry’s BJJ classes mentioned a bit which are hopefully still around? Any intel on the current state of options for boxing/Muay Thai would be much appreciated 🙂

MniederhausParticipantThank you everyone for your replies and valuable information! Looks like I’ll intend to do most of my cardio work in an indoors swimming pool as well as via mma training (I’ve been researching the CD BJJ Club). As I’m shooting for the Fall of 2016 to start at SWUFE, upon my arrival, I would love to pick someone’s brain about the in’s and out’s of the city (i.e. over a meal and a round of beer being my treat, of course); I’m a 32 year old American with limited Mandarin speaking skills, at the moment. Anyways, thank you all, again!

CharlieKeymasterJust had checked my official ranking.. Its under 1200, kinda funky really. Yea i tied a GM in college at a simul (he was playing 25 people). Havent played chess in years. Just ‘life’ has been busy and cant play it as much as i like to. Def not as good as i use to be. http://chesstempo.com/ Great site to improve chess skills/tactics.
I hear you. I will check out that website. Recently I checked out this TV show called The Tim Ferriss Experiment, where Tim Ferriss (author) attempts to acquire new skills really quickly. One one episode which I watched, he does Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Josh Waitzkin, the chess prodigy kid that they based Finding Bobby Fisher on (and also the first BJJ black belt under Marcelo Garcia). You should check it out, the episode is not only about learning BJJ but about relating mechanics of chess strategy to jiu-jitsu and vice-versa. Also featured in the episode is Maurice Ashley, the first African-American chess grandmaster, who they film playing chess hustlers in Washington Square Park, NYC.

JerrySParticipantIf you do come, come visit my club, one of the founders of the BJJ club actually use to run a skiing club in Chengdu. He knows the area and can tell you what is good… And bad.. Well mostly the area sucks for skiing (his words), but there are a few mountains around the area.

Janice GreenParticipantThanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. I’m gonna check out Jerry’s gym this evening, even though I’ve never done mma or bjj. Then I’ll check out robot later this week. I appreciate the advice! If anyone has any other info on good gyms, or wants to join me for training sometime let me know 🙂 I’m new to chengdu!
Cheers!
JerrySParticipantThank you Collin for your visit. It was great having you.
I would like to say sorry for not saying hi to you initially. I was busy cleaning the mats, no one there cleans the mats besides me. It’s my ‘zone’ sort to speak heh. Do not want germs to be spread to us.
Antion is a very good instructor, he pushes people in a friendly way, he knows everyone’s limits and he will push anyone there and then push harder just for yourself. This could be his last class before Jelly takes over. Jelly is more of a striker and kickboxer, but he will gear his classes towards MMA for future classes.
Come train anytime! You are a VERY strong dude and can easily break me with your strength! I will tailor your grappling game for your body type, youll be surprised how fast your game will get better within a short period of time!
Take care and see you next week! Also, send me the link for the gear you were talking about, i can tell the club to purchase it so we can add it to the gym.
Search for ‘Fabio Araujo,’ he is my instructor. 🙂January 14, 2014 at 10:20 pm #38333Topic: CDBJJ
in forum General DiscussionCollinParticipantI just got done with my first training session at CDBJJ and it was great. Jerry, Antion, Rocky, and the other guys were super friendly and the training was really good. In fact, I would say it was one of the best MMA training sessions that I have ever been to. It was definitely difficult, but enjoyable at the same time. It was nice to train in an ego free environment. As a personal trainer I was glad to see that the guys stressed technique and safety over strength and power. There was a lot of talent in the room and it sounds like they got big plans for the future. Tuesday night’s MMA training session will definitely be part of my week from here on out.
January 13, 2014 at 10:06 pm #38287In reply to: Muay Thai – Moko – Fraud
JerrySParticipantI do not watch the show, stopped watching since its glorified drama queens for MMA fighters. 6 weeks in a house with nothing but dudes and training, there is nothing productive with that.
Albert maybe coming in the summer, can not guarantee when, but he might come. To visit the other BJJ instructor at my club.
As for the MMA gym in Chengdu, not sure what is going on there, but the guys who opened it is just rich people who are sponsoring the local fighters. They are located outside 3rd ring road South West. Their BJJ program is Checkmat, which they paid some dude lots of money to teach. A few of my students now go there, but when they come back to train with us, they are left in the dust in terms of tech. Just last week, a female fighter from the MMA gym came to train with us. She said that she rarely trains BJJ at her gym and i have not seen her for one year. I expected her skills to improve during that time, but her skills was the same as last years. So not sure what is really going on at their gym.

JerrySParticipantOne of the BJJ instructors at my club has his good bud in the Ultimate fighter China. It’s the dude from Canada. Same fighter will come to Chengdu to do a seminar in the future.

JerrySParticipantJust come by and talk to us. cdbjj.org. No cage, not professional, just enthusiasts who needs training. The K-1 level guy is also a crossfit instructor, so in future once we get our own facility, he will teach striking and crossfit, while i will instructor who puts things together for MMA (and of course he will too).
What i mean by K-1 is that he had a few fights in Europe and trained with well known teams during his journey. I am very thankful for him finding cdbjj club and now we will treat him with soo much respect (he is a chengdu local.. Like Moko, but unlike Moko, my dude is humble and a true warrior), since i met him, i can tell he is a good and legit dude… Those body uppercuts he has are just mean.

JerrySParticipantOn that note, come train at my gym, just got a new MMA/Kickboxing coach, K-1 level baby! 4-1 in K-1! He quit the fight game because of injuries and little pay. My game is legit and moving up ranks in BJJ!
But yea Moko is a fraud, dirty ass gyms (he has over 5 gyms) and connected with sketchy triad dudes. He screwed a bud of mines

Chris ZiichModeratorBJ…. Ill pass, BJJ, sure heh. Had 20 people for tonight’s class.
I just bought tons of stuff on amazon. It will go to the warehouse in Cali soon, over 5lbs of recees… Damn! If this pans out, ill buy computer parts and build me a sweet gaming rig.
I doubt there are many advantages of buying computer parts from US amazon over getting them in China. It’s all made here anyways.

November 26, 2013 at 8:24 pm #37407In reply to: Personal Trainer Available
CollinParticipant@Jerry, I’ve been meaning to come by and check out your BJJ classes. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find the time. I should have some free time next month to drop by and get tapped out a few times.
@ Charlie, All sessions are generally 47 minutes long, but if you still have some energy left afterwards and would like to have a few extra rounds of sparring or drills I would be happy accommodate. It’s a pretty high-intensity workout so you won’t want to do much more than an hours worth of training because the increase in cortisol levels could actually work against you and make it harder to lose weight/gain muscle.
@Vincent, there’s nothing miraculous about hard-work and science. The key is over-coming the tendency to give up before you reach your goals. That’s where a qualified personal trainer comes into the equation. I know the price might seem high at first glance, but I can assure you that the quality of training provided and location is unrivaled in Chengdu. My goal with the 12-week transformation program is to teach clients all they need to know to take wellness into their own hands and lead a healthy lifestyle. Think of it as an investment in yourself. Your health and well-being is worth way more the 9000, isn’t it?Furthermore, several trainers throughout Chengdu charge 200 – 500/session + a gym membership for PT and many of them don’t do much in terms of giving their clients the information they need to take care of their own health.
At the end of the day, my value as a trainer is dependent on the results of my clients. As such, I do everything in my power and go out of my way to help them reach their goals. Luckily I have been successful so far and have been able to continue to do what I love as a result.
