Wends at the Karate Studio 7-9PM. I can not make it due to work. Which sucks, because i love MMA training and No-Gi (i teach ground game while the French blue belt teaches stand up).

Where is the karate studio located? I’m interested in checking it out. BJJ is cool but personally I’d really like to find some place to train muai thai. It seems that Chengdu doesn’t have such a place currently though.

    @AbbyCiCi

I teach at 2 different gyms, two different BJJ clubs.

25 hours from 11 AM-1PM. It is a laxed class, i just teach technique and roll, not much warm up. The other blue belts will usually do a warm up, i am dirt beat from Saturday’s training session to care.

Check that out. That is the other bjj club. I teach Sat and Sun from 3-5PM. Mond nights are from 7:30-9. Mond night is killer cardio calisthenics. Cross fit style with Gynastica Naturale. Not for the faint of heart.

My dream is to open my own gym. I want balance balls and huge ass kettle bells around. I love Kettle bell training! But only limit myself to 7lbs of kettle bell (in my living room gym). Why, because im a girly man :'(.

Would love to see the docum short when its done! Will it pertain to the DC area or mixed with many cities (like NYC and some CA cities)?

It’s about the entire US – we trained in DC, NYC, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Denver, South Dakota, and LA! We wrapped up at the BJJ Worlds in Irvine, California.

BJJ is kinda homo from an outside perspective, but there is an understanding with all gyms… No homo stuff! BJJ is really prejudice with anything related to same sex relations or LGBT stuff, thats another subject in itself.

Appearance isn’t everything, but BJJ definitely looks homo-erotic to the uneducated. Even among seasoned practitioners they can admit that it looks gay, but it’s not gay because they refuse to make eye contact. That’s what I heard from a few people at least, everyone seemed comfortable to joke about it which is nice.

Also, Jerry, we’re editing the documentary that we shot on BJJ in the States now, when it’s done I’ll share it with you.

I teach BJJ at 25 Hours on Sunday from 11-1. If its close to you, come train. Had a good showing there this past Sunday (few guys from Beijing came). Which might lead me to do a seminar in Beijing, keeping my fingers crossed!

But yea, the weights suck in CD if you want to go Brooklyn rage on your muscles.

Bones Jones has a bad rap around the MMA community. With bloggers, fighters and anything in between. Its only the media that hypes him.

Anyone that trains in a facet of MMA (BJJ, boxing, sambo, ect ect) who watches UFC will give credit to JJ, but will also say he has the personality of a twat and that ‘something does not seem right about him.’ There is a disdain for JJ in the MMA community. I stick by that tone, because well.. Watch his interviews and watch all of his former training partners, you will get a better personality about him. But of course, he is a legit fighter. Still want to see him get knocked out.

@ Ray, def with the wingman. But i feel you will do better than me. Was with a crew last night, almost all foreigners in my click walked away with a chick (4 dudes, one had his girl with him so he didnot count). Since i am of azn decent, i walked away with two hands (a few numbers but meh).

Perks of being a foreigner (white face-ish), is that the girls did not give a damn (the ones who i seen there). They kept eyeballing each foreign male, no matter how ugly, mute or just a prop with a drink in one hand in the corner. I never seen anything like this before (first time out in chengdu clubbing). While me, dancing on stage and having fun.

So waht am i saying? i have no clue, i had 3.5 hours of sleep and all i remember how i worked to get a girls number for a night, while a tall bald clean shaven foreigner (the prop in the corner with a drink looking for prey and i need a new haircut) got the same chicks number in less than 2 min. Funky how being round eyes might help at the local club scene heh.

Oww i saw a few bjj students there, did not expect that. I had a blast last night!! But yea, stay strong Lucy. Open your circle and go meet new people, if logistics allow you to.

On Wends we will start doing basic MMA (starting tonight). If your friend would like to come teach, he is more than welcome to. BJJ/MMA class is now canceled on Thurs, but moved to Wends at the Kendo studio (7-9). Since everyone that trains are professionals out side of martial arts, going light is essential.

Come train, the weather is perfect, best to lose 5-6 lbs of water weight!!!

I had a bud in college who ‘just’ played Diablo II when it came out. What do i mean ‘just?’ He was the number one ranked player in the world. He skipped classes, martial arts (one of my former training partners) and other things to just play Diablo.

So what happened after that? Well, he bought me to the casino, into the high roller section (he’s Jewish with money up the ass) and told me there was a glitch in the game. He watched in horror as his player was being killed by a NPC. Nothing could be done.

All in all, i got a free meal at the casino via high roller section buffet, while he was letting go of his diablo life.

Small tidbit, his ABC roomie just randomly told me he did blow. Only after i asked ‘why did you quit bjj?’ Never met anyone who did blow, let along admitting it. Hope hes clean now. Step one, admitting to a stranger that you do crack heh.

Hey Jerry, did you ever get any training sessions together in Chengdu? Is that weekly BJJ meetup still happening?

There is talk that i might also head the bjj program at another school, more details on that when things transpire.

Awesome, I might join that when I get back. I’ve been meeting black belts all over the place the last few weeks – Marcelo Garcia, Phil Migliarese, etc. Ran into Bernardo Faria in Ralph’s tonight. The Pan Am’s start tomorrow and Nemo is competing (blue belt super heavy weight) in the afternoon!

I head the bjj program here in Chengdu (via the bjj club). Use to be Jamie, but he went back home. There is a ‘black belt’ who teaches here also, but don’t bother with him. He (chinese ‘black belt’) just wears it to teach his students. He never wears it if one of my students goes to his school.

Currently on Thurs (7-9PM) at the Karate studio, the bjj class is held by a really good blue belt. Once the time is switched to Wends night, then ill once again teach it at the Karate place (work conflicts with training). We also meet on Sunds at 24 hour fitness (11 AM-1 PM). The fee for each class is about 30 RMB per person.

The easiest thing to study is Kung Fu, and it’s not hard to do that. You should find master Li Quan, we’ve written posts about him a few times and he’s a friend. He’s a professional kung fu trainer, wing chun (nan quan).

There’s also JerryS doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Chengdu, I think he’s teaching. He’s a brown belt and comes from a Gracie school so he’s a legit teacher. He’s on the forum a lot, pretty sure you’ve seen him.

So Kung Fu and BJJ will be your main options!

Well, for the rest of the people on the list, I am a little disappointed that one of the posts seems to have scared people off. I am NOT a teacher/shifu, ect. I don’t hire training partners to beat them up. But anyways, Sascha, that sounds amazing. I would love to experience this. In fact, since my experiences are with BJJ, Judo, Kickboxing, and the whole western self-defense movement (anything that will disable an attacker), doing this would be almost like one of the final pieces of the puzzle. Problem is I am only here this time for one week (I am a physician, and I go back to earn money, then come back here and volunteer/get some time to train in martial arts). Would Master Li allow a student to come and experience his style, which I am sure is amazing, for 1-2 days, with a plan to return?

    Thanks,

    Dave
