Been listening to this album on repeat… this is the Stones Throw drummer/producer who’s worked with everyone from Paul McCartney to Common. This is his first album and it sounds reminiscent of J Dilla.
Kariem Riggins – Esperanza
Quote:Dope hip hop instrumental tape…. if you like that sort of thing.Good stuff. Glass & Stone in particular is really nice!! It sounds like Bonobo.
Quote:That review is… ouch.I read that review and then noticed the Youtube clip at the bottom… that track is atrocious. I can’t believe Dead Prez would do that.
November 15, 2012 at 7:32 am #23572EliParticipantThat Kariem Riggins is dope! Does he have any projects out?
Whoa… just listened to that Dead Prez track. Disappointing.
I stumbled on the pitchfork review of their album also. They called it “unspeakably depressing,” “a slow-motion car wreck,” and said that Dead Prez decided to “go full Enya.” OUCH.
Here is a classic Dead Prez track to cleanse the palate:

Someone who pitchfork does like, as do I, is Roc Marciano. They favorably reviewed his last album, Marcberg, and in my mind hit the nail on the head when they said that “Marciano has locked himself in a dilapidated apartment and recorded a masterwork of insular, borderline-sociopathic hip-hop, much in the vein of the mid-1990s heyday of Mobb Deep.”

Anyway, Marciano just released a new album, and it sounds good. It will probably make the short list of albums that I buy this year:

November 20, 2012 at 5:35 am #23751CharlieKeymasterQuote:That Kariem Riggins is dope! Does he have any projects out?He has producer credits with a lot of well known artists like Dilla, Common, Slum Village etc but this is his first album. Apparently he’s already made waves with this album and everyone is giving him the nod for being from Detroit and sounding like Dilla (he really does).
Pleasantly surprised with recent dubstep discoveries (like the Reso above):
Hecq – Bete Noire

The M Machine – Faces
December 8, 2012 at 2:33 pm #24389NateParticipantDownloaded the Bronson and just can’t get into it, I think for previously stated reasons.
Loving Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid, m.a.a.d city
Downloaded Miguel – Kaleidoscope Dream but not got round to it yet.
Not sure who knows about Grime here, but here is a heavy grime set from the Slew Dem crew:
No idea how to embed vids.

He’s been the guy “up next” like Saigon or Papoose were for a while now. I saw him at Coachella this year and Dr Dre was on stage bigging him up hard.
Quote:Not sure who knows about Grime here, but here is a heavy grime set from the Slew Dem crew:I haven’t hear much grime – nice that this is an entire set though. Checking it out now.
Quote:No idea how to embed vids.Just put video tags around the Youtube URL (like this: [ video ]Youtube URL[ /video ] without the spaces)
December 11, 2012 at 9:59 am #24478NateParticipantCheers Charlie, that’s pretty simple. I think Kendrick’s already exceeded Saigon/Papoose, his star’s flying higher.
Here’s another excellent grime set from this year:
Beat selection is better on this one, MCing is hot too.
December 12, 2012 at 4:35 am #24509EliParticipantNate – that’s dope. I like the grime cypher.
And you’re right about Kendrick – he has already far surpassed Papoose and Saigon. I am a fan of both of those guys, but Papoose never dropped his major label debut (he was signed to Jive) The Nacirema Dream, though he did recently drop a new mixtape with terrible artwork (http://www.mixtapetorrent.com/papoose-most-hated-alive.) After a crazy long delay, and a falling out with his label (Atlantic) Sai finally dropped his debut album, The Greatest Story Never Told, independently. It received lukewarm reviews (from me,) and didn’t really boost his profile much. He has subsequently dropped a follow-up, The Greatest Story Never Told 2, but I have not heard it yet.
Kendrick on the other hand dropped one of the most acclaimed albums of last year independently, and followed up with a major label debut, which sold 250k copies in the first week. It seems like he has pretty much already made the transition from prospect to star.
December 30, 2012 at 4:45 am #25157Bertalan FarkasParticipantJust came across the latest DJ Stingray Album – FTNWO
Awesome stuff and don’t know anyone else doing this kind of stuff at the moment since Drexciya (https://soundcloud.com/clone-nl/drexciya-journey-of-the-deep) are no more.

Quote:Matthew DearThis is super good. I hadn’t heard this until now. I became a Matt Dear fan in 2004 at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. His live show is fantastic, he blew everyone else away.

January 14, 2013 at 10:54 pm #25672TyParticipantThis thread is really nice to see considering I’m moving to chengdu for 5 months and there are people into the same music as me! (TNGHT, FlyLo, Baauer, etc)
Where’s the good places to check out good edm music when I get to chengdu? (Lately been getting into a lot of trap, but enjoy pretty much every genre)
And check out this mix I made recently if you have the time!
January 15, 2013 at 1:09 am #25675TyParticipantand here’s what I’ve been listening to lately

Our old spot was Xiong Mao where we hosted Disco Death, and were some other edm events there also. We played a lot of trap and moombahton in particular though, especially last summer, most of the other edm in Chengdu is house or techno, dubstep, etc. There really is not good spot for that kind of music in the city right now, hopefully something will emerge as we exit the winter.
I’m downloading your mix now! Some of mine are available here: just charlie mixes

Brand new Baauer:
January 15, 2013 at 3:41 am #25690TyParticipantwell hopefully some places that play trap and moombahton open up soon.
im checking out your Marked 4 death mix and im digging it
keep in mind though while listening to mine that I’m just starting out so I still got some kinks to work out and could use more practice
