Would it be possible to add a button to go straight to the newest or latest unread post in a topic? I know some other forums have an option for this. This would especially help prevent a lot of scrolling in popular topics
This option already exists. Just click the link under “updated” instead of clicking the topic and it will take you to the last post.
May 14, 2013 at 12:56 pm #31434Vincent NLParticipantCheers, big help
May 14, 2013 at 10:07 pm #31460MeriorParticipant@ Charlie – take a look at the photowalk thread. Scroll to the foot of the thread and you can see there is a problem with text dissapearing out of the frame. Possibly the text window is bigger than the frame.
Also – trying to log in is still flakey, I can log in, get a Howdy welcome at the top right, go to the Forum and find that I am no longer logged in….. VERY frustrating logging in 5 or ten times before it sticks.
May 14, 2013 at 10:14 pm #31462MeriorParticipant@ Charlie – having said that, the text now appears to have corrected itself without me changing anything at my end like browser size. Strange because I treble checked the issue and even resized my browser to full screen to see if it made any difference – it didn’t.
The gripe with the log in still stands.

I haven’t seen any problems with text size, although the spacing between lines is a few pixels more than previously. I can fix that. The login issue is being worked on, along with the speed of the forum.
Let’s be patient everyone, we should already be thankful to Charlie for creating and nurturing such an active and friendly forum! The site is already looking better than it was a few days and I’m sure it will be working better than ever soon enough. Charlie as far as I know has a full time job, so I’m sure the changeover has been stressful for him too! p.s.Charlie, Let me know when you can help me dig up the PM data. Thanks!
Thanks Michael, yes I certainly do have a full time job. I’ve also been hosting 3 friends from Hong Kong since last week and organizing a few events: this one tomorrow, this one on Saturday, and this one next weekend. I appreciate your patience.

Thanks Federico, try again, this should be fixed now. I raised the PM limit to 200 per account.
May 17, 2013 at 11:52 am #31605Gary DanielsParticipantHi Charlie, I have a problem with personal messages. I am unable to reply to them. I’m not sure whether it is specifically me or there is some kind of bug. Just thought I should mention it to you. Thanks and best wishes, Gary
May 17, 2013 at 4:10 pm #31614AMParticipantLatest posts never seems to update.
May 18, 2013 at 2:49 pm #31653FedericoParticipantThank you Charlie! it’s ok now!

Do you mean on the forum homepage? I’m not really clear on what you mean.
Hi Charlie, I have a problem with personal messages. I am unable to reply to them. I’m not sure whether it is specifically me or there is some kind of bug. Just thought I should mention it to you. Thanks and best wishes, Gary
Hi Gary – I think there’s a current bug where if you hit reply on a PM it won’t automatically fill the recipient field. Try copying & pasting the username of the person you’re PMing and it should work. I will fix this.
Thank you Charlie! it’s ok now!
My pleasure, let me know if you notice anything else!
May 18, 2013 at 10:14 pm #31665RayParticipantLast poster function is essential. I gotta know who posted before i can commit to opening that thread. And people gotta be able to avoid my posts.
May 18, 2013 at 10:27 pm #31666Rick in ChinaParticipantDamn, saw the update and it was just ray.
I agree with last poster function 😀 I’m also in the habit of seeing last poster and find myself looking for it and reminiscing..
May 19, 2013 at 3:35 pm #31670MeriorParticipant@ Charlie – taking the Photowalk thread as an example, if you are not logged in then the Index page of the forum is now several days out of date as is the Photowalk page itself. Log in and suddenly more recent posts appear in the thread and the index page updates as well.

Yes, the forums don’t update unless you log in.
May 20, 2013 at 8:26 pm #31712AMParticipantIs there a new code for embedding video?

You’re right – the issue is that there’s a caching plugin that’s in use on Chengdu Living which greatly reduces server load. As a side effect, the forum homepage doesn’t refresh like it should unless you’re logged in. The plugin will be disabled (and that problem will be fixed), but first it will be moved to a new, faster host with more RAM. It’ll be fixed soon.
Is there a new code for embedding video?
Yes, it’s much easier now. You just post the Youtube URL on its own line, that’s it. This is what it looks like:
May 29, 2013 at 3:41 pm #32043BrendanModeratorI have a couple of observations on the maintenance, since I’m still having some issues.
– HTML seems to not be working. I’ve referenced wordpress forums on format, and when I follow for example the <img src direction, it still ends up as scribble on the post. Can we simplify all the HTML where it’s become convoluted?
– PM’s are funky, and it can take up to 3 clicks to get to the inbox. It feels like the forum site is operating inside another frame, and the two aren’t quite gelling yet. I sometimes see a wordpress message bar at the top of the page, and other times it’s not there. I’ve had to resend messages also, which for some reason did not send first time around.
– We still don’t have the last poster visible on the front page, and I can see that’s caused a drop in traffic, along with the other glitches. It’s still running very slow I notice too. Even Jerry S has left the building!! What’s the world coming to when Jerry S isn’t amusing us with his irreverent, ill thought out faux chauvinistic ramblings in the forum.

The visual editor in the post author window should make HTML basically unnecessary. You can format text just by clicking buttons instead of using shortcodes. Most people don’t know how to use shortcodes and thus don’t use them, so this is a much easier solution for 99% of people. For anyone unclear, these are the buttons I’m talking about:
You can still toggle between the visual and text editor using the tabs on the right, in case formatting is messed up or you just want to be elite about it (like 3L1as aka Elias).
PM’s are funky, and it can take up to 3 clicks to get to the inbox. It feels like the forum site is operating inside another frame, and the two aren’t quite gelling yet. I sometimes see a wordpress message bar at the top of the page, and other times it’s not there. I’ve had to resend messages also, which for some reason did not send first time around.
The Private Messages link in the forum sidebar should take you to your inbox in a single click. It is a bit screwy though, I can and will improve this. Replying to PM’s necessitates copying & pasting the recipients username, for example. I haven’t seen a PM not send, it should say “1 PM sent, 0 errors” when sending. If it didn’t send or something went wrong, you will know immediately.
We still don’t have the last poster visible on the front page, and I can see that’s caused a drop in traffic, along with the other glitches. It’s still running very slow I notice too. The last poster column is being added today, sorry for taking so long with that. While these small things are being fixed, the entirety of Chengdu Living is being moved to a much more powerful server. Since the server it’s being moved to is a VPS and not shared hosting, it necessitates in building the server environment instead of having everything all set up. Everything will be much faster.
I don’t know where Jerry S is at, but I hope he comes back and brings his antics with him. New users are always coming and old ones are leaving Chengdu, so it’s natural to see that to an extent.
Traffic is actually not really down, there are well over 1,000 people that check the forums daily. More people read the forum than you might think, today I met a few Australians filming an hour long documentary program on Chengdu for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation – they did a lot of their research about Chengdu and what’s happening here on the forum. For a while during the transition there was a significant drop in forum activity, which is a result of not properly testing everything before moving to the new forum architecture. Whoops. The move had to be done for the long term stability of the site though.
Thanks for submitting these issues Brendan, a few people have contacted me via PM with random bug reports that I’m working on also. Thanks to everyone, actually.
