So Google maps has had a big update after its long open beta phase. A big new feature is the option to collaborate with others to make custom maps. you can add your own labels and descriptions to locations, draw lines and shapes, and colour code everything.
I thought maybe we could use this to create a usable map of Chengdu that’s accessible by everyone, make it multilingual and helpful, share recomendations and advice, and anything else we can think of. It’d also be nice to be able to map out everything from Chengdu Places in one big place.
Here’s a very brief idea of what we can do: Chengdu Map

Ideally I would like to use something like this to harvest data and then put that information onto Chengdu Places with details like photos, phone numbers, etc. I will first start learning about how the updated Google Maps works – it’s been a while. I’ve only been using Apple Maps for the last 2 years or so but the new Google Maps looks pretty slick.

Google Maps’ UI for editing is probably pretty neat and easy to use, but just wanna mention OpenStreetMaps – a free open source Google Maps alternative with crowd-sourced data. Personally I prefer contributing to OpenStreetMap over contributing to Google Maps.

Worth considering, especially since Google has such frequent problems here, especially without a VPN. Here’s the link, this one works, but there isn’t much on here aside from Dojo to demonstrate the functionality: Chengdu Maps
