Chris you’ll be okay. But if you are worried check out this link: http://stronglifts.com/10-tips-to-stop-your-knees-from-popping-and-cracking/
On the other hand I feel like “stair-fearing” old man. Doc said not to bike to work, but its less painful then going up and down all the stairs in the metro. Let alone getting pushed and cut in front of by all the perfectly healthy un-injured subway riders. ROAR

I try to limit to one serving of carbs such as a tiny amount of rice for gong pao ji ding gai jiao fan at lunch. Eating more fruit and vegs eggs, tuna, lamb kebabs etcI tried the Paleo diet a few months ago after it was strongly recommended to me by a doctor I trust. Like you, I found it really difficult. I couldn’t stick with it after not seeing a noticeable change after a month so I’m in the same boat as you currently, just cutting out as many carbs as I comfortably can.

Honestly though, I can understand that. I can feel that squats with a lot of weight are really hard on my body. Gotta be careful with those. Getting close to failing with high weight low rep squats is scary. Make sure that your posture is good and you’re with someone who knows what they’re doing so you don’t get hurt.

January 11, 2012 at 10:11 am #16169RayParticipantGoal for 2012: 4 minute swiss ball plank. Try it. Absolute killer. Will work your abs better than practically anything. Give the squatting a miss for a while, try some other more-rounded routines…

January 16, 2012 at 5:02 am #16397RayParticipantOk, lately i’ve been hitting the swiss ball (those huge bouncy balls in the gym), it’s awesome for improving flexibility and works the core like a killer. This one is great for lower back, hamstrings and glutes (ladies can do it to; it’s not just for the giant squatters).
1.Lie on your back, arms to the side, palms up (kinda like a jesus c. pose)
2.Put your lower legs on the swiss ball
3.raise your hips to the ceiling. Should be a straight line from shoulders to hips.
4.now with your lower legs (ankles and calves) roll the ball as close to your butt as possible, then roll it back to starting position.
You’ll know when you do it right, cos your lower legs will be screaming. For some reason, i have alot of trouble keeping my palms up with this one. Looks kinda funny ( i had some strange looks when the local guys manage to look away from their cellphones) but its a great workout….

March 7, 2012 at 2:10 am #17792BrendanModeratorWATERMELONS: INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED STRENGTH UNITS MEASURING DEVICE SINCE… WTF!!?
This scratches the surface of the seedy side of bodybuilding. I met so many of these douche bags on and off the circuit (amidst some awesome folk) I couldn’t stand it any more. Their facebook pages are usually filled with millions of pics of themselves taken with their iPhone… ALONE!!

March 7, 2012 at 6:43 am #17797JerrySParticipantHis name is Andre Galveo, one of the top bjj fighters in the world today. The stuff he does on the balance ball is specific for bjj/mma. He is about 5’9 185 (prob walks around 210). The stuff he does here is advance, so dont try it at all.
I do the same thing, well back in the states, i rarely do it now because no time and no motivation.. My ball is sitting in my living room now asking to be bounced on heh. I also do muscle activation, bjj ball training and Marinovich Training Systems. Not for growth in muscles but rather stabilized muscles, core strength and explosiveness. Great for the back and great for flexibility. I taught my students about the ball stuff and they have improved greatly; from their bjj form, balance and all has a mean knee on stomach to break a dudes jaw on the street!

Most were wearing chains, New Era hats, skull caps, etc while lifting weights. No white people except for me and 300+ lb guys were all over the place! It was interesting.

I met Fernando Yamasaki (Mario Yamasaki’s brother) too. Very nice guy.
March 7, 2012 at 9:00 am #17804BrendanModeratorQuote:I also do muscle activation, bjj ball training and Marinovich Training Systems.Muscle Activation is awesome, definitely one of the most overlooked techniques for improving function in human movement and strength. I’m not such a big fan of the Swiss Ball, unless it’s being used by the like of these guys who have a good understanding of function. Commercial gyms love to sit fat ladies on ’em and do lazy ass shoulder presses!
One of the most productive disciplines I’ve used alongside my training has been Pilates. I’ve owned a reformer in the past, so I can vouch for the strength and stability it promotes if you stick at it for a while. Whenever I’ve trained anyone for strength or condition, I’ve always tried to apply it’s principles in movement. I can’t wait to have my spine barrel show up next month, that thing snaps my entire spine back into alignment in seconds.
Quote:Most were wearing chains, New Era hats, skull caps, etc while lifting weights.Honestly, it’s a phenomenon how these guys all look like carbon copies of each other, not to mention how pissed off they all too often appear to be. Without getting too bro-tastic, I do love that someone like Phil Heath has come into the sport of bodybuilding, it’s been a mess for a long time from the douche factor. He might be a scary monster to most, but he’s a smart guy who’s wholly dedicated to the sport and pursuit, and I dig that all the way. There’s nothing tougher than bodybuilding at the elite level.
March 7, 2012 at 9:11 am #17805CharlieKeymasterQuote:Honestly, it’s a phenomenon how these guys all look like carbon copies of each other, not to mention how pissed off they all too often appear to be.Yeah, honestly it did look like that. Everyone was nice though, so no problems really. But even in the steam room, it was unisex and filled with 15 people, some wearing shoes. There was a kid I’d estimate to be about 13 who brought a single dumbbell in the steam room with him, lifting it over his head. The steam room isn’t even on the same floor as the free weights. Richmond is pretty ghetto.
March 7, 2012 at 9:16 am #17806JerrySParticipantMAT (muscle activation technique) is great, spent 400 USD on it, well worth it.. And also had a bud who treated rich house wives on a daily bases. He advocated against getting knee surgeries, why? After two sessions with him, he was able to relieve the pain from the knee and eventually (with self practice) they would avoid surgery!
But yea the ball stuff is not for fat lazy people. Its an entire world of neurological stabilization when using it correctly.. Or ‘balance’.
I miss bodybuilding shows, its always a great place of getting free protein and.. steroids! Not only that, you get to see dudes walk around like Superman!

The bigger shows can be great, it’s just a shame that bodybuilding has been hijacked by the supplement industry, even if that has brought huge earning potential and validity to the pursuit as a career choice.
March 7, 2012 at 9:42 am #17808EliasParticipantJust watched Pumping Iron on Sunday, some fantastic Arnold quotes.
That watermelon vid is borderline gay porn/ no?
Its bench day people.
March 7, 2012 at 10:13 am #17810JerrySParticipantIll reframe from watchin the watermelon vid now, borderline gay porn, ill pass 😛
THe show i was at is a yearly tradition. There are tons of venders giving out free stuff. One vender was giving out shots of this drink, he said something scientific, synthetic mumbo jumbo, i suspect he knew what he was talking about. Then i just cut to the chase, steroids? He said yep, my crew and he was lol’ing, because after he admitted it, i just went all day saying ‘yo i gots me some free steroids, you want it?’
These shows are a blast for the average joe like me walking into the place like this.. Its also the first place ever where i got super buzzed off the free caffeine calorie burning drinks i downed all day.
