    Is 文艺青年 an appropriate Chinese term for hipster? Any others?

    Yup, I believe that is the correct translation for hipsters. Another way to say it is 时髦 shí máo apparently, although I haven’t heard that used in conversation.

    2B青年 is more commonly used. (but think of a stupid/weird/retarded version of hipsterosity)

    Is that kind of derogatory? When I looked up hipster in Chinese online I found there are many definitions, but I haven’t heard most of them used before.

    2B情人 is kind of like a Chinese internet meme. Kind of like hipster barista. If you baidu image 文艺情人, you’ll find pics that are divided into 3 sections: 普通情人, 文艺情人, 2B情人

    I’ll have to check out the Gulou area next time I’m in Beijing. Perfect excuse to pop into the Natooke shop while I’m there!

    I haven’t been to Natooke in Beijing (last time I was there I wanted to but ran out of time), but I hear that the Hutong that Natooke is on has a lot of cool stuff going on. Good area to stroll around and check out.

    hippie = 嬉皮

    contemporary hipster in 2000s = 文艺小资青年

    时髦 literally simply means “fashionable” of any period from 1920s to today.

    小资: bobo / bourgeoisie bohemians

    a regular pattern:

    普通青年(common young people) vs

    文艺青年(hipsters) vs

    2B青年 (“wanker”) (2=stupid, B= pussy, or, creature comes out from pussy)

    joke examples

    普通青年s drink instant coffee

    文艺青年s drink brewed coffee

    2B青年s queue up outside Starbucks…

    普通青年s use Windows computer

    文艺青年s use Apple/Mac OS

    2B青年s install MS-windows on macbook

    小资:

    资 = 资产阶级 bourgeoisie class

    literally “petit bourgeoisie”

    here it means bohemians, or, pretending bohemians

    文艺青年 = hipsters

    however 文艺女青年 implies

    “non-sexy unrealistic girls living in literature fantasy”

    similar to:

    PhD = PHD, Permanent Head Damage

    Definitely check out Natooke北京 if you have an opportunity, the place quite literally changed my life.

    On Wudaoying Hutong (五道营胡同) there is a nice vegetarian restaurant right next door called The Veggie Table, outstanding hummus. The rest of the hutong is little shops and boutiques that are worth a look. Also the School Bar often has stuff going on.

    The whole Gulou (鼓楼) and Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷) area very close to Natooke北京 is pretty nice too. Sort of like 宽窄巷子 here but not so ‘done’ and with a bit more character.

    in sichuan culture,the right word you are looking for is 街娃儿. pronounced as guy wa(er). 文艺青年is more positive, usually used to compliment,or sarcasm.
