The English author of this book is coming to Bookworm on July 9th and the book sounds really interesting. Here are some reviews and an overview:

“A thrilling journey through a thousand years of obsession and betrayal, this is the most extraordinary work of imagination you’ll read all year.’ ADAM JOHNSON, Pulitzer-prize winning author of THE ORPHAN MASTER’S SON

‘‘An extraordinary novel. Erudite, intriguing and compulsively readable, THE INCARNATIONS takes the reader on an intimate and mesmerizing journey through Chinese history. Susan Barker, a born storyteller, has written one of the most remarkable novels of recent years.”

Beijing, 2008. The Olympics are coming, the city is rejuvenated, but taxi driver Wang is barely alive. He drives in circles, ferrying passengers around the congested streets. Then one day he finds a letter addressed to him in his cab, and Wang’s gridlocked life is over. Someone is watching him. Someone who claims to be his soulmate who has known him for over a thousand years…

Wang is sent more letters. Each one takes him back in time: to a spirit bride searching for her long-lost father in the Tang Dynasty; to young slaves fleeing through the desert after the Mongol Invasion; to concubines plotting murder in the Ming Dynasty; to an Englishman held to ransom during the Opium War; and to Red Guards rampaging through the streets of Beijing.

Sweeping majestically between China past and present, THE INCARNATIONS illuminates the cyclical nature of history and shows us how man is condemned to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

So it’s like Cloud Atlas in China?

    Cool.
