On a side note, what use does FEC actually have? work visa aside i don’t know a single case where it would be used.

There are, but as right now its still vacation, you’re out of luck. They normally have 1-2 perfomances per month with 100-150 RMB ticket price range (can get cheaper too).

Sadly, no. Otherwise i would have gotten it long ago. So im still at 1 year/90 days. I could fly next day but price difference wasn’t worth it.

2dben You didn’t know? 🙂 Its like a standard way to renew limited stay visas. Especially, as Charlie said, if you’re close to any border.

Never seen international chess here in 3 years. Chinese seem not to play them at all, they have their own (not to mention several other games like Go)

Ermmm power adaptor/transformer? Not sure if local electrical appliances shop has it but computer center has it for sure. China is 220V, 50HZ so plugging your thing directly would make its life bright, but short 🙂

Silvia, sorry to say it but you drew a short straw. If the company you work with does not abide by the contract and delays your salary, then its obvious you are being scammed.

It might seem a radical advice but as soon as you wrestle your money from them by any means, i would just leave. It wont hold any aftereffects for you as even from what you said the contract has already been severely breached.

The teaching process itself looks ok, its one of two ways kindergartens and primary schools work. Not every school can allow itself to have a full time teacher set so they often hire substitute teachers to show for each class once a week just to get the feeling “how to do it right” to the kids (and to raise their value in kids parents eyes).

Your real problem is that you are hired by some agency. That is worst situation possible, and i would advise you to change to direct employment ASAP. It is because of that you jump between locations, have no impact on what/how you teach, etc.

I dont know any places in Yiwu sadly, but i would be surprised if there was none. For Chinese learning its same everywhere, cause course is standard, so it falls down to teachers.

My reason for failing in Chengdu is simple: i am not a native speaker. So i am in a disadvantage by default as far as teaching jobs are concerned, not to mention visa issues, and translation jobs are a rarity.

no i returned already. Wasnt bad there, i was in a small city couple hours from shanghai so clean air, cheap, same weather. Boring as hell, yeah, but can go Hangzhou or Shanghai easily for entertainment. Also Yiwu (another small city) has a name for it and a laowai community if you require.

I’d say its about the same as here, local food aside 🙂 Chengdu one’s is more to my taste.

Also, i didn’t choose that location, i just searched for job china wide and ended up there. Now trying to settle down in Chengdu second time. If i fail again, guess its bye bye Chengdu for me T_T.

Well i just recently returned after teaching in Zhejiang for half a year, so right now im resting and lazily looking for a job. Once im settled down again i plan to go and pass HSK 5 at last, which should ease my search for translation jobs.

For activities, im wrong person to ask 🙂 But Chengdu is lovely city so you wont have any problems with those, no matter your preferences. And if for some reason Chengdu doesnt have it, Chongqing will.

Total is 2.5 years but last year was wasted as i reached HSK 4 in 1.5 years and after that it was a standstill. Worst part is that course simply not designed to such advanced level, you will still use same way as you did from 0 to 4. But it just doesnt work… 🙁 Advanced classes may be called like that but in reality they are just the same.

I studied Xinan Caida from 0 to HSK 4 then i tried Sichuan uni, Sichuan normal uni, Minorities uni and all of them left me disappointed. So now im just chewing that rock myself. I suppose finding a private teacher in uni would be good but first i have other thing to take care of 🙂

2Charlie: Any demand for translators/interpreters? Teaching kids makes me rusty in my primary skills.

At your level uni language courses wont do you much good IMHO. They are good to pull people up from 0 to HSK 4 but afterwards….

Have you considered getting BA in Chinese language? with HSK 5 you can go directly to second year.

Well its not Beijing here so short time without mask is ok. But now is a bad time pollution wise, so be warned.

If you’re fine with looks, respro served me well. Comes in all colors, pink included (for you, perverts and blondes) /advertisement ends.

How’s you kids teaching?  With adults, unis are probably the best option but if you can work with kids, schools are plenty.

Largest ones probably EF (good one), Meten (not bad at all) and I2 (worst ever).

Plus like the one above me said, small schools, hit or miss, if hit – you can safely work there for years.

Also if you really lucky and/or have connections, corporate trainer is probably the top position available atm in that field.

Considering shale gas is one of the biggest frauds atm, i dont think that will go beyond test holes. Too expensive to get it compared to usual gas. Wait for oil prices to breach 100 again, that we will see it. Development must go on at any case, since any alternative to usual oil/gas combo is worth it.
