Everything is fine. People have opinions. People like drama. It’s where they derive their identity from, their egoic sense of self. They see a random question and start labelling the whole thing with judgement and interpretation, analyzing the question upside down and putting it in a little box in their heads. And then they start pointing fingers to anyone that doesn’t comply with their own little made up mind patterns. Fortunately, no matter what’s going on inside anyone’s head, it doesn’t define reality.

A dash of dismissiveness, a pinch of condescension, and a serving of solipsism does not a good point make. But you are right about one thing: staying in your own head won’t help you understand reality. That’s where listening comes in. So when someone says they’re offended, maybe you should listen instead telling them everything is fine.

    Couple of things:

    1. This AMA was bringing in questions irrelevant to Johnny’s business from page one and to try to stop discussion of irrelevant topics at this point just because they are irrelevant is disingenuous. Johnny asked people to ask anything, and some have plumbed the depths of their deranged minds to test the limits.
    2. I don’t think the appropriate response to someone saying they are offended is to tell them to be less sensitive. hyobin interpreted the extremely tasteless hypothetical “would you rather” as misogynistic. We don’t have to agree with her, but we can’t tell her how to feel about it.
    3. Likewise, hyobin, I don’t think it’s totally on point to mention that question without giving some credit to the way Johnny answered it or how other members have emerged to converse with you about it. I’m not sure who you feel is perpetuating what stereotypes, but Johnny did a great job of offsetting the offensiveness of the original question with an answer full of respect and admiration. And Mr. Klink has offered some self-awareness to the mix. I think you pointing out its potential hurtfulness is a good conversation starter! But please don’t conflate other forum-members’ poor sensitivity to potentially misogynistic things with an unwelcome attitude towards women. I am a firm believer that this forum will only become a better place as more people come to use it, and I am sorry if that question made you feel disrespected. We can all do a better job of putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and trying to understand what it’s like to be them.
    4. Johnny, you da best maann. You deeed it.

or your favorite spotify radio station (I think I seen you using spotify in there)?

My question is: why do kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch (and will you ever incorporate breakfast cereals into any of your donuts)?

I saw you had some pink frosting and heart shaped donuts for Valentine’s Day. You planning on any other themed ‘nuts?

Thanks for doing this Johnny, really cool idea! Here’s Johnny 5’s listing on Chengdu Places.

What/who is political trash? Genuinely curious. Did you lose your job? Do you need a hug (I’m a great hugger).

Hey so the answer to your question is yes. I’ve played squash in CD before, but I’m not confident enough to take you up on your offer. Anyways, a quick search gave a couple places. Not sure how your Chinese is, but follow the links for Baidu Maps directions. Also note that these places need you to call in advance.

If you’re in the south, there’s this one located in the Chengrenlu Wanda Plaza Mall on Second Ring Road. The phone number is (028)84519666 and it costs 80 for non-members, 50 for members. Never been there myself but the reviewer said you can shower and the facilities there are alright.

If you’re closer to the center of the city, then the Baolihao gym also has squash. Here’s the Baidu map link. Also requires you to phone ahead, phone number (028)86210088.

Again, I don’t have any personal experience with these places, but they’re around.

Hey man, thanks so much for the feedback. Really, means a lot to know that even one person listened all the way through, so thank you!

I think “how to feel more connected with Chinese people” is going to be a running theme throughout the Podcast, whether it’s an explicit topic of conversation or not. We touched upon it on our recorded-but-not-yet-published podcast on learning the Chinese and it’s just such a relevant part of being a foreigner here. First and foremost, we want this podcast to be a useful and hopefully insightful resource for foreigners in Chengdu, and there’s no way around talking about our place in the local culture.

As you might be able to tell, we know there are areas which we can improve upon. It’s a bit of a work in progress. That said, beyond content and topic ideas, we have lots of ideas that we’re excited to implement… things like mixing up the panel, increasing the fidelity with some better gear, experimenting with different ways to use the audio, and some other things.

We hope you’ll stick with us as we explore different ideas and continue to give us useful feedback.

Hey Pikachu, glad to hear you’ll be coming! Please bring any friends who might be interested! Ok, so….

倪家桥 nijiaqiao, near the consulate road, is the closest subway stop but it’s still about a 20 minute walk from there.

    WALKING

If you walk, just walk away from Consulate Road (you may have to cross Renmin Nanlu depending on what exit you came out of the subway), make sure you’re on Nijiaqiao road and keep walking straight until you hit Yulin Zhonglu, take a right on Yulin Zhonglu then walk till you hit the big red hot pot place. A simple walk, but for those who don’t want to walk it all the way, bus directions below.

    BUS

If you’re taking the bus from Nijiaqiao, this link will show you the Baidu Maps suggestions. The bus stop is near the corner of Renmin Nanlu and Nijiaqiao. Basically take Bus Line 114, 77, or 79 two stops, get off, continue walking in the same direction a bit, then take a right on Yulin Zhonglu, and then after about 5 minutes you’ll see the hot pot restaurant with the red siding on your right.

If any of that is unclear, please let me know.

I strongly recommend people make it out to support these kinds of events, firstly because they’re great, and secondly so we get more of them! The culture scene here can feel pretty limited, so gotta support these kinds of events when they make it here. Cheers, Rob!
