    Brendan,

Yeah, thats the right area. But the pin in that google map is actually on the part of my map marked ‘other market, with fish and other seafood mostly.’ So you are going to want to walk down towards the KFC about half a block and enter the market from the 向阳街 alley.

    Regards,

    Eli

Charlie – I didn’t mean to make that picture of the map so large! Can you help a brother out… thanks.

Sorry homey, Im not sure how to properly do that. But I have drawn you a primitive map that might get the job done, if you are familiar with the general area:

    elis-map.jpg

Basically, you want to enter the market from the little alley to the right, and you will find lots of shops in there selling similar stuff. I have put an asterisk by the general location of the spot where I bought those steaks, but there are lots of shops in there, and their pricing and selection is pretty similar.

I just stopped by the QingShiQiao market and picked up some steaks:

    steak2.jpg

This is about 4 lbs of steak. 65 RMB per pound.

If you are off-put by piles of dead frogs on the floor, I will say that the Ito Yokado steak selection, is, as Rick mentioned, actually quite good… if slightly overpriced.

Sorry that I am late to this steak discussion.

I, for one, can strongly strongly vouch for the quality and value of the steaks available for sale at the Qing Shi Qiao market.

I frequently buy steak there, as well as lambchops, chicken wings, and butter. You’re best bet is the block of the market that backs up on to the Carrefour. You can find a good selection at many of stores, which although small, usually have large walk in freezers next door. Don’t be dissuaded by the atrocious smell, and piles of dead frogs on dirty tile floor… it is what it is. All the good steak there is frozen, and in large cellophane covered lumps in the freezers. They will slice it for you at your desired thickness, and if you request (as I do,) individually vacuum seal the steaks in bags.

Speaking of remixes of that Gotye song, I really like this remix, done by a good up and coming rapper named STS:

    STS: Cut Me Off

I listened to that a million times and though that it was an original. I was telling a friend, he was was like… yeah, that song is on the top of the charts in the US. I agree that the hook sounds like some ole Genesis shit.

    Jack,

Your written English looks like it is pretty decent. If your accent is good, you can probably get a job teaching English without too much trouble. I know a Korean American girl who teaches English, despite her Asian appearance. Probably don’t want to advertise that English is your second language when you go in for that interview though. It might not even come up… many of the American teachers that I know here have pretty mangled English themselves.

    Hey Nele,

My girlfriend (Koko) is busy teaching tomorrow and Wednesday, but we could get together Thursday evening if you are free. Maybe do dinner somewhere in Yulin or TongZiLin – there are a lot of good restaurants in the area. I get off work around 6, so any time after that would be fine with me. Just let us know what you prefer.

    Regards,

    Eli

    Hey Nele,

My girlfriend runs Sinostage, but it is not actually a studio in a traditional sense. It hosts masterclasses for visiting dance teachers in Chengdu. You can see some videos from their recent workshops here:

My girlfriend actually focuses on contemporary (commercial) and hip hip dance. She is the artistic director of a club in Chengdu (CC) and she teaches dance at the SiChuan conservatory.

I think the best thing would be for me to introduce you to her, and maybe she can help you find what you are looking for. We live in YuLin, so maybe we can get together with you for lunch sometime.

Got the Clams Casino instrumentals on the ipod right now. I like it a lot. I have not heard the TNGHT ep, but I will check it out.

Here is another (relatively) new song that I have been feeling lately: http://mellomusicgroup.bandcamp.com/track/you-know-who-you-are-f-olivier-daysoul-acoustic-bonus

    A few hip hop recommendations:

    Big KRIT – 4EvaAndADay

Shad – Melonchally and the Infinite Shadness

    Curren$y – Cigarette Boats

Also, the new Nas album, Life is Good, is excellent.

I have also recently been listening to the album, ‘Far,’ by the female acoustic vocalist Regina Spektor, and I really appreciate her song writing, especially on the songs, Folding Chair, Laughing With, and Wallet.
