I’ve yet to figure this one out myself Vincent. I did pass through the Decathlon out by the High Tech Zone last week, but didn’t see any protein powders, but then I wasn’t really looking for it in there.

I still haven’t seen anything but Whey Concentrates here so far, and all at insane prices. I’ve seen some greens and fibre supplements, but these are of lesser quality, and higher price, which ironically seems to be the rule.

This is all extremely important to me, and if I can’t find a good source I will definitely get around to shipping a quantity of essentials over here. I’ll post on here if I find something, just as I’ll let it be known if I get to the point where I’m about to order.

Easy to see why the Chinese population is less than muscular!!

A ‘Slick Coffee House’ is something I’ve been thinking is needed here myself Charlie. I’ve been to the odd spot that’s been okay, but nothing has stood out yet.

Wouldn’t be too difficult to create something funky and slick, with Wi-Fi that doesn’t crawl when one single soul in the place decides to watch something on YouTube! Maybe that’s another venture for the future! And to be able to choose the soundtrack… No more whiny crooners at Starbucks, or Art Of Noise on repeat at the Bookworm.

Kill me now, but after my coffee at least.

I gotta get my head round the taobao thing, it keeps getting mention as the go to source for otherwise hard to find shiz!

Did this thread just take a hilarious turn? I’m all for mounting, but I feel more information is required beforehand!!

I’m not sure if I’m interested in an open bottle of soap you got! But…

If anyone knows where I might find some all natural (paraben free, etc) products for sale here, like ‘Burt’s Bees’, that would be awesome! Most of what I see here appears to be the big US brands, repackaged for China. No thank you!!

Ha Ha! I ended up finding a salon directly opposite where I’m living (right beside the H exit/entry of the Wensu Monestary station), on the opposite side of the street above Wo Wo. The salon is ‘a Jie’, part of a chain here. I paid 128 for a top cut in a private room, with a guy who had a little English. He also had the sense to have a laptop right there with a translator running, which was super helpful, and I came away with a decent cut.

I’m not sure I’d dare trust it to someone in an alley for 6 kuai, such is my vanity!!

    Props to you though!

Er… I was going to add to the above that I would wait for a 2nd gen, which should have a higher capacity (maybe 128 gig?), but I don’t see that coming until Summer. Meanwhile there’s a whole host of things Apple should focus on improving in the OS X!

I ended up buying a 64 gig at the dubiously named ‘apple store’ on Chunxi Road, at the apparently universally set price of 5588rmb, which almost balances out if you factor in North American taxes. No one in the store had a real grasp of English, and so ensued an hour long adventure in purchasing.

I had checked out Sunning across the road, but apart from no one in there having any real clue, they’d sold out of the 64’s.

Vie since seen various places selling them, officially or otherwise. I think the safest bet would probably be the authorised Apple Reseller in the ‘Computer Plaza’ building, just east of Sichuan Gymnasium metro. They had all the peripherals in there, good stock, and good service too.

Is this guy still rubbing people up Charlie? I need a good massage therapist, and acupuncture would be an added bonus! 25 yuan sure beats the $110 per session im used to paying too!

Wow… You were not wrong on the cheese front! I expected as much to be fair, but that’s more plastic than I’ve ever seen in one place! A very subdued affair to be honest, but at least there was a countdown to be had. After that, no one really seemed too interested, and it wasn’t all that busy in the first place, so most people disbursed right after. Would be a potential venue for a big party though.

Hope you guys had a good one.

    Happy New Year to yous!

LKF are advertising a techno night, though something tells me this will be hideous! I wonder if anyone here has any input on what to expect there. Im guessing a big slice of dairy product.

As for training the day following large alcohol intake… I’ve tested that a few times myself. As it goes, if you’re in shape, it is believe it or not a good way to gauge your condition. Much of the water from under the skin is out, and your blood vessels are open, which is why you will still see bodybuilders sipping alcohol backstage of a contest. Not exactly recommended, but it almost passes as a good excuse!

You’re training at the University gym, right?

I’ll have to go back and check Computer City out again. It looked bizarrely half dead in there!

I’d though about the PS3 option, that’s half an idea. As for disc prices, I think the discs I’ve seen so far are legit, which would (almost) explain the high price.

I laughingly bought a complete ‘Seinfeld’ box set today for 280RMB, only to get home and open it to find a good number of episodes just plain missing!! It’ll be interesting to see how the ‘give me back my money’ outing goes! Lesson learned.

I’ve seen Chinese resellers advertising them through taobao, but not in stores yet. I could probably live without the 3G, but it would be handy for picking up emails on the go, and of course helping me out when I’m down some back alley not knowing which way is up! I’m starting to see some incredible midi/audio apps appearing, which given how little the thing costs (if compared to say, a Lemur, which in truth I still fancy), make it a safe buy. I just know that next year there’ll be a revised version on release, with greater storage and lower price. Another plus is that I could get by running Reason & Record with it as my controller until I ship everything out here and get set up.

    3999… Is that for a 16G? I’m after a 64G.

And by Apple Store, I mean reliable reseller. I’ve seen a bunch of people selling iPads, but would rather get some feedback before buying.

Is anyone aware of 3G plans and coverage here in Chengdu?

Not seeing Dark Knight on a big screen = Fail! A great cinema flick.

I’ve been seeing a good deal of vendors selling knock off DVD’s, and even a store on Tongzilin Road selling great looking (cased) DVD’s of very current movies at 17RMB each, and I’m curious to know if any of you are aware of reliable sources of these discs? It’s be great to find good copies that are subtitle (option) free and in English (obviously!). I’m a little bewildered by the high price of Blu Ray here though, China obviously hasn’t been embracing that quite as much. US prices of Blu Ray have been cut hard, along with the price of players, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here at all.

For what it’s worth I’ve joined a 25 (?) Hour Fitness, which turns out to be less than 5 minutes walk from my apartment, and has cost only 1200RMB for 6 months (1680RMB would have got me a year). The gym is just east of Wenshu Monastery subway station, virtually above a supermarket. It’s been there for 5 years apparently, so it’s showing a bit of wear and tear, but it’s spacy, with plenty of equipment and essentially, plenty of plates, but the dumbbells do cap at 70lbs which just means getting creative, but all in all a decent place for the money.

I still haven’t seen any decent whey protein, only concentrates, albeit insanely overpriced. I did see some ProLab whey, which although is still concentrate, is a good quality product so long as you’re not lactose intolerant, but not at 800RMB for a 5lb tub!! I paid $25 trade for the same tub back home, so no way that equates! The search is on for finding (or supplying) decent whey proteins.

If anyone else here sees anything worth a mention, perhaps you could post for the benefit of anyone else looking.
