Any updates on this? Places to watch UFC fights in CD?
Jordan PorterParticipantHi there!
In absence of a real co-working space I am creating co-working meetup (similar to the style of Jelly), where entrepreneurs join forces to work together, share ideas and solve problems. Effectively the goal would be to create a co-working community and a support network for young or early stage entrepreneurs.
I plan to do weekly (or bi-weekly at the start) morning meetings, where would join over breakfast or coffee and work from around 9-12.
Please let me know if you are interested or message for more details.
Jordan PorterParticipantCharlie and Chris left some good recommendations.
There are lots of cool contemporary bands in China too – check out Hedgehog, Queen Sea Big Shark, Carsick Cars. They are all from Beijing, but there are some sweet bands in that scene- i think the drummer from Nova Heart is in Hedgehog as well…. However, they all sing in english a bunch, not great for learning Chinese, but good to restore your faith in the fact that there are cool bands here.
Download an app like Duomi (or qq music I guess) you can download or stream songs (tons of songs, serious selection) and the screen will scroll through the lyrics as you listen.
And if your into Cantonese nothing beats Beyond!
Jordan PorterParticipantYeah the TV tower is pretty high, forgot about that one. It costs like 100RMB to go up there though. Anybody been?
There’s got to be some pretty high vantage points in the south too no?
Jordan PorterParticipantI help out with the British Chamber of Commerce Magazine and welcome anyone to submit a short, (not overly political) review of a book related to China, to be published in the magazine.
Feel free to contact [email protected] for information.
Jordan PorterParticipantThe Corpse Walker by Liao Yiwu is one of the bets books i;ve read on China. Its adapted from his Chinese book titled something like Interviews with People from the Bottom Rungs of Society, and is an incredibly candid honest and cutting version of exactly what it says, interviews with people who have seen it all from the bottom. He is from Sichuan and most of the interviews are with people in and around Chengdu/Sichuan are. Liao himself is now in exile based on his honest portrayal of certain issues throughout his career. one of the most informative unpretentious books ive read on China

Jordan PorterParticipantyeah i asked some Chinese friends who go to Chuan Da they said its not there any more…
I went to the one at UNO this afternoon, and had a sweet tine. Its on the 7th floor of th big UNO mall (big H&M and Uniqlo) on 顺城大道. just north of Chunxi Lu, on the way to the main Visa office.
It was a prett decent facility (mind you they couldve zambonied it every now and then) and a pretty fun time. For 90 minutes its 30RMB in the morning, 40RMB in the afternoon, and 50RMB after 5, and stays oopen til 930. mind you if you overstay your time you have to paya little extra. price of course includes your skates which are figure skates not hockey skates, so its pretty easy to catch a toe and go for a spill if youre not careful, haha, just watch out for the little kids and girls practising their ‘routines’
Jordan PorterParticipantcool, thanks, whats the address in Chinese for that UNO
Jordan PorterParticipantyeah, i’d love to play some ball, ive been trying to find s regular game as well as an indoor court so i can keep playing through the winter… where is this place?
Jordan PorterParticipanthaha, yeah we’ve done that before, but cant do that all the time, we definitely don’t really channel a reggae vibe either
Jordan PorterParticipantyeah, i just went to Tom Lees, i was just in Kowloon for a couple days so it seemed the easiest, i asked some people about other music stores but thats the one most people said, seemed alright to me
@Hillary- always a big fan. are you planning to buy in Chengdu? let us know when buy and if you discovered anything good that i might have missed, thanks
Jordan PorterParticipantin case anyone else finds themself in this sort of situation i will follow up here… the selection for 2nd hand stuff in Chengdu was pretty negligible, and other than some Ibanez and Epiphones most guitars were a lot more expensive than they would be back home…
I ended up going to HK to get a new visa and bought a MIM fender tele for considerably less than it would have been in CD, and with no taxes so it was actually cheaper than the end price i wouldve pain in Canada. worked out ok, but a bummer i couldnt do it all here… and doubt i will be selling this anytime soon. haha
Jordan PorterParticipantthanks Charlie, i looked a bit on taobao but i feel funny buying a guitar without playing it first. i guess i gotta start going to rock shows and networking….
Jordan PorterParticipantyeah, i checked in a bunch of the stores i know around the Sichuan Music University before i made this post. i guess i was just a bit bummed that the new instruments prices were marked up so much from the US/Canada prices, and that there wasnt much 2nd hand stuff.
i was hoping there might be some sweet secret network of musicians who all traded and sold gear and that i could get in on that
