dim sum – check out the Shang Palace restaurant at Shangri-la, they do a 70rmb all you can eat dim sum brunch, pretty delicious. there’s a place called BestChet Hong Kong Restaurant in Jiuyanqiao area as well, near NiuWangMiao, that is supposed to be good too. i’m going to try it in the next week – will report back on my findings.

Charlie, what’s the other place for good sushi in Tongzilin? Hefeng?

Re: Yafei Dental – my mom had a cap knocked out during a scooter incident in Malaysia – went straight through her lower lip and out the other side. She got stitches there, and when we came back to Chengdu together she headed to Yafei to get them removed/get the tooth checked out. Peter Torres did the work and was apparently excellent – really nice guy, super professional, etc. She had a great experience there but yeah, it was pricey.

I’ve only been to Harmony Dental and was pretty impressed. There was a dentist there who spoke very, very good English, the facilities were clean, and they didn’t cheat me which is always a plus! I’d chipped a front tooth on some delicious 排骨 a few weeks before and was pretty sure I’d need it filled.. at Harmony they took a look and said I could always get it filed down for 50 rmb as it was at the very tip of the tooth, OR get it filled for 400 rmb. You can guess which one I chose. They did a great job!

Apparently a full teeth cleaning there is 200 rmb, which I’d say is a decent price.

I’ll unfortunately be in Hangzhou/Shanghai that weekend but might I recommend to everyone to check out a band called 山人, they’re playing on the Saturday I think.. they are a seriously awesome folk group out of Yunnan, use a big variety of instruments and have great tunes. If someone can pick up one of their CDs for me as well I will pay you back for it plus a generous tip!

I hate when Chinasmack has an article with an awful picture and they don’t add anything new for a few days… so you either have to see a huge photo of a zookeeper licking a monkey’s ass or a big toe sewn onto where a thumb should be or whatever. Freaks me the f out every time.

Seems to be your typical fat middle-aged seppo English teacher.

    I’d check the Shamrock.

Love me some big tats too! 😉

Rachel, I heard this is basically what women ESL teachers in South America experience. We may be living on the wrong continent.

@Ray True enough, but I have been in China long enough and had enough male laowai friends to know that those who are getting laid frequently by more than one woman are often not really looking to settle down with any particular one (I’m not judging BTW!). Some of these guys are actually in pseudo relationships but are only here for a short while so also have other ladies they see. They don’t have a problem with any of it because they’re young, they’re not here forever, they’re off travelling a lot and they’re generally busy so just don’t have the time for something long term. Nothing wrong with that, certainly, just think the girls in question need to be aware of that when they start ‘seeing’ a foreigner.

Certainly agree that the real playas are probably keeping things on the DL. Think I know a few of those types too, haha…

Sorry to echo Rick in China’s sentiments but it was 2 weeks.

Girl, ball the f up, you met this guy at a party, he was probably drunk, I’m sure he had another girl or two on the go at the same time. I have guy friends who are exactly like this. They’re nice, they speak some Chinese, they have an OK job and pasty skin… and I guarantee this dude had no idea about how you were feeling.

If you made his bed the morning after, before you left his place, that did not make you his girlfriend. If you texted him lots and went out for dinner a few times, that did not make you his girlfriend. He’s a laowai, he thinks differently from Chinese dudes and it will come across as prick-ish, but he most likely had no clue about how you were feeling.

I would steer clear of dating young foreign guys. Most of my friends are this guy. They just wouldn’t know they’re being that way, or that a girl was super into them or whatever. On the plus side, JerryS seems like a keeper!

Cheers, but I am hoping a combination of weights and a thrice weekly workout of Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease will have me looking like Brendan in no time

I scoffed at this thread but now have a serious question – what are the best exercises to tone arms and legs for girls.. don’t want to be ripped but just get some definition. Already doing diet-y stuff but would like to do weights as well. Have no idea where to start.

JerryS, for shipping stuff via China Post I did exactly as you describe – walked into a China Post, had them explain the options.. they gave me two cardboard boxes and I loaded my shit into them, they taped them up, paid blah blah about 4/5 weeks later they arrived in Melbourne. Was extraordinarily straightforward and easy.

I shipped stuff to Oz (from Hangzhou, mind you) in the past with regular China Post, arrived in a month and was about 90 and 140 rmb respectively for boxes of clothes and shoes.
