DanielleParticipant
Charlie – if you head east on Hangkong Lu, away from Tongzilin metro station, you’ll hit the Greenery after about two blocks (right side of the street).. I think it’s the corner of Hangkong and Xinxiwang Lu, nearish to the Oakwood.
They also do a mean pumpkin soup!
DanielleParticipantThey’re not mind-blowing but the Greenery (at least the branches in Hangzhou and Kunming – I’ve seen one here on Hangkong Lu, near Tongzilin station) do a sort of acceptable steak – it’s cheap (40-50rmb for a steak on a sizzling plate, some sauce, side of veg/noodles, a soup and a roll), filling and tender!! Their other stuff isn’t bad either. Awesome Thai fried rice..
DanielleParticipantpug tonight!
DanielleParticipantThanks Charlie will check it out.
7 – isn’t the NZ stuff pretty expensive usually, though? How long will it last in the fridge after you open it?
DanielleParticipantif one were looking for more than just hemp caps where would one need to go..
DanielleParticipantjellyfish!
DanielleParticipantcan’t help you with the band but dude i love the national – boxer is all i’ve been listening to lately!
DanielleParticipantthere are two really good home style chuan restaurants off xinxiwang lu, sort of close to the oakwood, that my workmates and i were alternately going to for lunch every day for two weeks.
to get to the area just take subway to tongzilin, take the hangkong lu exit (D) and walk along hangkong lu about 5 min (you will pass two decent hong kong cha cantings) til you hit xinxiwang – the greenery restaurant is on the corner there. walk south down xinxiwang for 2 min or so til you see a pedestrian street on the left, next to century21 rental agency. there are about 5 restaurants there, a place called ‘lily’s house’ being in the middle.
i forget the name but the one on the right of ‘lily’s house’ is super good – their liang bai mu’er is off the chain, great hui guo rou, really nice pumpkin soup and dofu gan. the place at the end is also good (think it’s called hongge xiaoguan) and has awesome yuanzi tang (meatball soup), sweet and sour fish, and tea mushrooms stirfried with bacon.
both places are clean, have picture menus, outdoor seating and aren’t too expensive (for 5 of us average bill was about 80 rmb). one of the places has really good buckwheat tea too….
DanielleParticipantdo you live anywhere near a subway station or bus stop? google maps has a function to chart out your public transport trip anywhere round the city (in english, no less), with bus numbers, time needed, etc. just put in your starting address and destination and you are good to go.
DanielleParticipantcool, count me in! what time?
DanielleParticipantchengdu is definitely a good city because it strikes that balance between having enough “western amenities” to be comfortable but still not the kind of place where you can live the exact same lifestyle as you did back home, which i think are more true of beijing and shanghai, or a lot of the wealthier cities on the east coast. i’ve lived in both kunming and hangzhou before and found there were things missing – one was way too smalltown, the other super wanky. i’ve found chengdu suits me pretty perfectly – weather sucks but the people are great, the food is fantastic and it’s an amazing place to party.
you’ve just gotta think about what’s important to you – is it weather, convenience for travel, foreigner-friendly stuff, cost of living etc etc.
the whiners are usually child support payment-avoiding dickfaces who show up drunk to their weekend classes teaching 8 year olds, can only get laid at pink light palaces and end up at the shamrock on a tuesday night complaining to their fat 60-year old drinking buddies about how much they hate chinese people.
if you’re aren’t a) a bitter alco, b) an obese old guy w/ penchant for 18-year old chinese golddiggas or c) running from the law back home then chances are, china might be OK for you!
DanielleParticipantsaid Smirnoff currently gathering dust, better make this party asap – am good anytime this week except thurs (margarita night, sorry)
DanielleParticipanttigerkuma – going to a thing tonight but might head to the pug later though (again). i’m a little bit in love with the bartender who makes those painfully strong margaritas..
DanielleParticipant7:30 good for me, lots of time for some free margarita action
DanielleParticipantyou gotta do the rockaway and leeeean back
DanielleParticipantyou gotta do the rockaway and leeeean back
DanielleParticipantthey’re apparently 120 now, before i’d heard only 80 each but wooow expensive and does NOT include drinks apparently (so the poster literally meant the bar was open..for business)
DanielleParticipantthis will be a stupid question as i’ve never touched an iphone before but if one was to buy an iphone 4 in china, use it on china unicom here etc then head back to their country of origin and get a plan with a provider there – would one still be able to use it outside of china? is it at all easy to just change the sim, get the new plan or whatever?
