Thanks Elias, that would be fantastic. I’m only here for about four more months so the cheaper and crappier, the better!

JerryS, they didn’t do anything too extreme, that was what was so disturbing. All they did was make a circle pit, got a bit rough and then bam they’ve got 50 security guards all over them, beating them down. I thought it was awesome that they were raging against the machine. Most of the crowd agreed with me. You could hear them yelling obscenities at the guards as they were taking the punks away. Awesome to see young Chinese pushing back against authority.

HAHA the picture of Brendan and the Russian Bud girls is pure gold.

Dude, those punks I was talking to were the ones that got beaten by the security guards yesterday… eerie.

Day 3: recovery. Great performance from Useless ID in the evening. Beautiful weather. Crowds a lot smaller than yesterday. Xiong Mao tent almost empty in the afternoon.

The most exciting/worrying thing that happened was during Smegma Riot’s performance in the afternoon. These punk dudes started a bit of a circle pit, a bunch of the millions of security guards hopped up on the center barrier to watch them or something, some of the punks grabbed the guys and pulled them down/pushed them off… and then suddenly there were security guards EVERYWHERE, pushing and shoving the punks in a human wall.. some of them fought back and had to be dragged out, one was grabbed by the hands and feet and carried out to the security area… the band stopped playing, people were shoving, swearing at the security guards etc. It was insane. Kind of scary too. The band had no idea how to react and it looked for a few minutes like they were going to be called off the stage. They eventually did start up again but people were definitely not raging as hard as before. Was a solid reminder that we were still in China

How much you pay? Somehow managed to hitch a ride with two uni students for free to Jiuyanqiao then cabbed it from there.

Zebra Day 2: also not quite an exercise in restraint.

Nasser was fantastic though. Electronic band from France.

Xiong Mao was good fun as well later in the evening.

Charlie, it was a tent for Rio brand mints, but they’d set up this huge flat screen with Street Fighter, not sure which gaming system but ended up killing a large amount of time getting my ass kicked there. Fun (and nostalgic!) times!

So, Day 1 of Zebra was awesome despite a few short spells of rain. Great vibe overall. Unfortunately I spent most of my day consuming copious amounts of liquid fun so missed a lot of the acts (esp in latter half of day), however from what I did see the music was good and there was a solid turnout.

    Highlights:

    – The jam session mentioned above by Elias in Xiong Mao tent. Was really fun – excellent tunes and a bit of dancing!

    – 10 rmb ice Jager shots

    – Circlepit during Backyard Surgeons, an Aussie punk band (who were coincidentally very nice dudes to hang out with after)

    – Clean washrooms

    – Being able to sit and walk on grass

    – Street Fighter tent

    – Free draft beer at the Chivros BBQ Fish tent for foreigners! (you can guess where most people spent the day)

    – Watching Mosaic — pretty fun Chinese band

Xiong Mao tent seems to be the best place to chill, definitely. Will be headed back up to Zebra this afternoon for round two!

Oh man, so many games – I found the best resource for teaching kids was the common sticky ball, a plastic ball with suction cups around it that stuck satisfyingly to the blackboard when hurled by a wiry 8-year old. This could be used in a variety of games: the ol write a bunch of verbs, put circles around them and get kids to hit one and make a sentence.. the ol make a grid, put question marks in each square, get a kid to hit one then reveal the magic number of points – or skull and crossbones indicating death…

With uni students I’ve found discussion games have been successful. Last week tried doing one similar to speed dating – two rows of chairs facing each other, on each chair a slip of paper with a different scenario featuring person A and person B (ie A: You’re 30 minutes late meeting up with a friend at Chunxi Lu. Make excuses. B: You’re angry that A is 30 minutes late. You don’t believe their excuses). The students in the person B line of chairs would move up a chair every two minutes. Was wildly successful and funny to boot. Students exhausted after speaking English 20 minutes straight. Yesssssssssss.

Starbucks is great value if you get a tall brewed coffee – 17 rmb, add your own milk… the same size coffee of similar (or worse) quality at other coffee shops will set you back a bit more than that…

Here’s another weirdie – a local friend recently told me that some Chinese will eat eggs boiled in the pee of a baby boy as it is meant to give them strength and purity or something

Totally peaceful, beautiful place with tons of awesome non-traditional style teahouses surrounded by trees, flowers… good homestyle food… lots of places to walk and chill out… new Macchu Picchu with really good 5 rmb coffee, free use of bbq and kitchen facilities and stuff for badminton/volleyball… (totally selling the new MP but would love to book it out for a day with a group)

    Best thing: Sanshengxiang

Worst thing: Lack of Japanese restaurants
