thats just becuz there are stupid

I’m crying laughing at my desk. Well It’s time to get back to doing something constructive with my life, and hating this country I choose to live in. I can no longer be arsed to read angry pseudo-factoids of drivel that this 14 year old kid is churning out.

Lawrence, I think you’ve identified the problem in your title. If you’ve spoken with foreigners and what you’ve taken away is that they hate china, then yes, you don’t understand foreigners. Yes, we love to point out the flaws and quirks that make this country unique and so farfetched from our respective countries, but this is almost always to make light of them. I can’t help but giggle when I have to maneuver around huge potholes in the unlit streets to my apartment. I was doubled over laughing when I saw a truck drive past with sparks flying out from the steel wires that it was dragging up the road.

I’ll be there. It seems as though you’ll have plenty of attendees, but no speakers. I’d love to learn about the Raspberry Pi. Alexander, get up there!

This sounds great, so I’ll definitely be attending a few of these. I’m not sure how to measure my own level, but any practice that I can get in a relaxed environment such as this will invaluable, I’m sure. However, on Tuesday nights I’m teaching until 7/7:30. Though I’ll likely, still make the trip as 15rmb is a very appealing price tag.

One question: What do you do when it rains?

I’m a self proclaimed Android user, but I’m past the phase of spitting at Apple’s name. As a developer,  there’s still a few niggly things that I just find frustrating about apple products – be that software or hardware. “Why can’t I attach files to emails!?” I will shout. It’s never fun when when my family expects tech support for their iPhone’s.

Perhaps I was too rash for saying that the specs are the same. Although, for the average user, I believe that 16gb and the A5 chip will be enough. Plus the frugal voice in my head always tells me not to bother with apple.

If you absolutely must have an iPad, save yourself a lot of money and just buy the original iPad mini. It’s 1.8 inches smaller than the iPad and around half the price. The rest of the hardware is the same. Plus they’ll take a dip in prices now that the new models have come out.

Google Hangouts work great. Simple IM, good video that rarely gets dropped, free group video, plus if you have a gmail, you already have it.

I would say that the existence of this forum, which represents a very broad network of people from a lot of different nations, serves as a counter to the negative attitudes of a minority of thinkers that you’re talking about. Stereotypes are unfortunate business. A leftover habit from a time where we were all afraid of the unknown and scared of foreigners.

Ergo all of these stereotypes must be taken with a pinch of salt, as I’m not sure if there’s anyone who truly believes that they’re 100% accurate. Every day I’ll hear the Dutch call the French gay, the Polish call the Dutch lazy, and the Greek call the Chinese Stupid. The latter has led me to believe quite the opposite. However these are all meant lightly, as people will even accept these in an act of self deprecating humour. Except for the Greek guy, but he’s just an individual idiot.

I’ve been in Rome listening to an American man complain to the manager of a Burger King that he was waiting too long to use the toilet because there was only one for each gender. If people aren’t intelligent enough to accept that things work differently outside of their home countries, then let them live in their own ignorance and never experience the wealth of the outside world.

Maybe we’ll have a Belgian beer in a Dutch run bar in our city in China some time and talk about this at length. Just remember there is warmth and brotherhood among the tolerant and intelligent people.

What I’d like to see is a map of Chengdu 100 years ago.

The only other one that i’ve found is part of some dude’s travel blog. Although it appears that this is on display at Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi. I’d like to get up there and snap a nice, high resolution picture of this.

Does anyone know what the chances are of getting a digital copy from management at a place like this?

No I’m from Liverpool. Callum is from Runcorn.

And here I thought I could avoid getting called a wool, in China.

I’m originally from a satellite town, Runcorn. But I’ve been living in the city centre for two years.

    Why do you ask, Ian?

What is there to do for Halloween around here? Is there a big party somewhere?

Sticking with your theme, I have the following:

    • Enlightened blind masseuse (White coat and some dark glasses, could offer services to the ladies.)
    • Budai (Gold spray paint and some robes.)
    • Johnny Foreigner(Hawaiian shirt, shorts, ray-bans, camera, plus I’ll be really drunk.)

I don’t know much that far south, but a little ways up on line 1 will take you to some decent bars. Correct me if I’m wrong, Chengdu Vets, but I believe the stop is 倪家桥. That’ll get you close to Hellen’s, on the fourth floor of the Poly Centre near the american consulate. Round the corner is Carribean Plaza which is an…interesting scene of young locals and very drunk expats.

Friday Nights is also the group bicycle ride, 8pm at Natooke. Which is a really nice contrast to the ‘Get smashed, and go dancing’  practice.

You can find much more info than I can give on Chengdu Places linked at teh top of page.
