Ha! we were all there, we were the big group in the back of the library section that had the projector. there were maybe 20 of us all at a big table. to summarize the meeting, we are now the “Chengdu Photography Club” (CPC), next meeting at the Bookworm Nov. 22nd. The project is to bring three photos in the theme “Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral” (up to your own interpretation, could be just three different genres, different exposures, or examples of “animals, veg, and minerals”). They can be from pictures you’ve shot before, but try to make them with/from China. We’re setting up a Yahoo! Group and will have a mailing list (details will follow). The photos will be compiled and shown at the meeting, with critique by the group. For this first time, we’re all going on independent shoots (unless you want to go out with other people, then you organize it yourselves). But the idea is that in the future, we’ll organize outings/”photo shoots” to go as groups, and photo challenges. Email me with any questions: [email protected]. I have the organizer’s email as well, which I can give you via PM/email.

    Cheers,

    -Peter

    Sultan’s a great place.

1 Yulin Nan Jie, Jin’an Bldg., No.14, Chengdu

    成都玉林南街1号金岸附14号

If you’re at the Bookworm, head down the street away from Renmin Nan Lu, make a right at the end of the block, head about halfway up that block, look (to your right) for a side street/parking lot that has shops on the righthand side, go in there, it’s a few doors down on the right. of all non-Chinese food places in the ‘Du, the Sultan is the one place i can go and never be disappointed.

Anyone have any new info about rowing in/around Chengdu? I may have found a source to buy a rowing machine (damn expensive though). Anyone know ANY gym in CD that has a Concept2 brand indoor rower? One can hope…

well, my girlfriend already has a gift of a pearl necklace for my cousin, so i figured i’ll get a set of cufflinks or something for him. so both gifts would be something for them to dress up with. but thanks, that was a helpful comment… 0.o …

Thank you, Chengduliving.com. This simple forum has led me to an extraordinary person. For anyone who is interested, I’m actually moving to Sweden this summer to live with Stina. Of all of my experiences in China, the greatest story was falling in love. Chengdu will always have had a special place in my heart, being the first city I lived in in China. But now doubly so, since it’s the place where I met the most amazing person I’ve ever had the honor of knowing.

I just got a PS3 (after reading the article here on CDLiving hahaha) and have SSFIV. One of the other teachers at my school really likes that game, though we’ve been playing Tekken 6 more. He said he’s found an arcade that has both games and some guys who play competitively. I’m still practicing up, but if y’all shoot me an email, maybe we can all meet up and practice/meet up and duke it out at the arcade.

There are a number of us around. Personally I’m 22 from America teaching here in the south of the city. From my personal experience, I don’t know too many people my own age. I know quite a few in the 20-30 range, and a good number older than that. But there are quite a few in the city. If you go to the bar in the Shangri-la Hotel (called Mooney’s) on a Thursday night (Ladie’s night = free wine for women), there will be a sizable crowd. Really, just check out any number of the western bars and you should come across plenty of people that are pretty chill (everyone that I’ve met in Chengdu is laid back). There are foreign students that study at the various universities in Chengdu, which may be a bit younger but will be closer in age than a majority of the expats (I’d say average age is mid-30’s). As far as living, it depends on how much you want to spend. Yulin area is really cool; it has great food, cool bars/night scene, and it’s rather pretty with some tree-lined lanes. I think the general rule for price is that the south part of the city is most expensive, then west, then north and east. There are lots of real estate/rental agencies that can help you find a place in their area. I’ve only been here since August so others will be better informed, but these are the things I’ve found since living here. It can be a bit odd at first hanging out with people significantly older than you, but you get used to it. I’m lucky since two of the other teachers here are 22 and 23 and went to the same university as I did, so we had built-in friends. Chengdu is awesome, so welcome. Feel free to contact me with any other questions ([email protected])

    Cheers,

    -Peter

Thanks for the info Miya. I may go there in the next two weeks. My parents are coming on Jan 29th, and I was thinking it would be a cool destination to take them while they’re in Sichuan. But I’m not sure if they can handle the long bus ride, and the plane tickets are a bit pricey during the time they’ll be here. In addition to Jiuzhaigou, does anyone know much about Hailuogou? That’s another place I’d like to go (though probably not with my parents). My real interest is hiking/trekking/camping. So any info about those subjects in Hailuogou would be great. Much appreciated.

I found it! Or rather, one of the Chinese teachers at my school found it for me. I had heard it in a taxi a few days ago, but the driver gave me the wrong name, but from that I was able to remember the tune. I whistled it to a teacher and she looked it up online. Here’s the video from the metro that I remember:

Quite a good song. Now I have to find the lyrics and write a guitar part for it.

I’ve checked all of those songs and unfortunately none of them are what I’m looking for. The search continues…

Thanks for the lists. The thing is, the song is the same song both times, just sung a different way. I’ll check the ones you gave me though.

Thanks Charlie and Shinichi. There’s a lot of good information here. I’ve found that, no matter what country you’re in, where there are rivers, there will be rowers. I’ll just have to search around until I find a club team.

Thanks all for the great info. Charlie, I’ll definitely have to check out the jajah website. Though I’ll definitely have to also have a calling card and phone for the offchance that the internet goes down. One more question for y’all: what are the shipping options in Chengdu? Do any of the major companies have offices there (FedEx, UPS, DHL)? And if so, where would they be in the city? This question is more for when I’m preparing to move back to the states, and I’m sure I’ll explore the city enough by then to know the answer myself. But it’s something that my parents also want to find out in case they need to send me stuff. Again, thanks for the information. Can’t wait to get there (22 more days!)

Thanks Charlie. That’s good to know that the university has a multitude of instruments. I’m quite keen on getting a Chinese flute as well.
