I’m interested to know what’s the benefit of installing a vpn directly on a router ? Is it only to have it working directly without having to start it up on your computer ?

Anything that connects to the router is automatically run through the VPN. This means that you not only don’t have to run any VPN software on your computer, but all other devices that are connected are also routed: phones, tablets, game consoles, etc.

Right, that’s more or less what I was thinking, I guess you would have to add some Chinese website ( taobao,jd ect… ) to the vpn ignore list. However  with this method can you still use the openweb mode with Astrill ? Or is it open vpn / stealthmode only ? ( Open web is the fastest for me most of the time )

    Thanks for the tips.

I find this deal to be pretty good most of the time but the speed can be varying a lot during peak time, I can jump from 80kbs to 4mo/sec every 10 seconds while downloading on steam  sometimes.

I’m really surprised by this aggression. I talked about this topic with three different cab drivers, they told me that they had more than enough clients already and two of them did not even bother using official app like didi.

They also told me that they did not considered it as a threat since they’re still driving all day like they used to.

So I’m really surprised to see how much cabs in Chengdu are fighting against Uber and also how violent this protestation seems to be, is there not more of a story behind this ?

    Just my two cens :

I would personaly not advise you to work here without having a proper visa.

There are indeed a degree requirements for the visa, and the English school can sometimes fake it to get the right visa or just apply for the wrong visa and you will be working illegaly.

Even if your chance having trouble are low they stille exists, if you plan to stay in China for an undetermined amount of time I really advise you to get a certificate, not only you will find better job but this will remove the stress of getting in trouble if you even have to get your papers checked.

You seem to be very motivated to get here which is great ! But don’t let that enthusiam fool you, and wait until you have a decent proposition ( with decent pay ), even if you can survive with very low salary here.

That being said best of luck for you I’ll hope things work out !

To avoid the confusion : there is two different things

The astrill VIP option which is available to any customer that have an Astrill account is allowing you to connect to VIP server in order to get a better ping and a slight boost ( that’s what I was talking about in my message ).

The China Telecom VIP/International option which does not seems to be available for consumer in Sichuan.

I have a couple of friends that use it whenever they take the car !

Every morning when they go to work, every-time they go to my place, ect…

To them it’s a great money saver, DidiDaChe  works okay for me but it’s sometimes difficult to find a taxi especially if the distance you’re travelling to is short.

I’ve also took the black taxi in front of my work place a couple of times, they’re pretty friendly and they even wait for me if I just need to go to the bank / trust me to pay them later on when they have to pick me up ect… ( they know where I work after all :p ).

That being said I must admit it’s a little unfair for legit taxi.

So the “International offer” definitely exist. I wonder if it’s available for CT customer in Chengdu thought.

I have a 100mb connection with China Telecom, I can download at 1.5mo/second at time behind Astrill, I’m paying for the VIP option which allow you to connect to faster server and I believe that’s what’s giving me the boost.

Also Ping is what generally what matters in China ^^ ( Aka the times it takes you to contact a distant server ).

Definitly keeping an eye on this too.

I recently moved to the tongzilin area, subscribed to the 100Mb optic fiber with china telecom, it’s ok most of the time I get a good 20Mb behind astrill when connecting to japan / taiwan, it can get slow at time thougth.

I’ve heard about the VIP / international option it’s very obscure and sounds like the holy graal :p

Some have reported it’s called 国际精品网 and that you need to go to CT with your passport.

Other said it’s only for companies.

I will call CT tonight and let you know if I can find anything about this.

I have no questions but I have answers , and my very special psychic abilities to see in the future indicate me that a Frenchman is gonna eat some donuts in your shop sometimes this week end. He is snobbish ( French ) and expect your donuts to taste like heaven , so he will be merciless with them.

    Be prepared.

Wow , they were indeed talking about it last year already however I was never forced to enter any personal information into weibo, but looks like this time it’s gonna happen, it’s crazy that there is no warning about this on weibo already.

Anyway I don’t see how that’s gonna work, it will probably be very easy to provide  fake ID / Adresse ect… if you really want to stay anonymous.

Thanks for those infos, does any one know how do VPN.ac compare to service like Astrill or Vyr-vpn ?  I also heard good feedback about Strong Vpn but never as the opportunity to try it so far.

Also it looks like Freegate is still working. Do you guys use your own router , or do you stick with your Provider equipements ?

I have been offered only a few interview in China for game programmer job, they’re mainly looking at your experience in the domain. However because most company don’t offer relocation for a lot of people in a year, the selection can be pretty tougth ( most of the time you have to go througth 3-4 interview and technical test ).

I would guess that if you are already in China and they don’t have to relocate you it might boost your chance.

Yes and that’s also much quicker /less hassle  to proceed than the employment license.

However I have been denied when trying to apply for one through my Company, they said that now the expert foreign certificate is only targeting on Management position, such as Company manager, Department manager etc… and that my position was a technical one so it doesn’t apply.

On my side I think it could be related to my diploma not quite being a Bachelor despite having lots of work experience in my field and a company that wants me I’m still unsure if I can even get the employment license, wait and see :).

Are you a developper as well ?

Even if I might have enougth Chinese for everyday life / conversation I think it will be quite challenging for me to talk about code and software using Mandarin 🙂 . The writing / reading part being the hardest part ! However I imagine one can pickup a lot after a certain period of time.
