    15. Fashion-wise there is still a stark difference between China and the west. They may be wearing Prada from head to foot but will still look like a Mainlander.

    This is the oddest truth that I can imagine would pop out in this thread.

    The price varies between displays but I’ve had 3 ipad screens replaced @ the same little shop for varying rates just over 100 yuan. It’s right next to Shu Ma computer city in an apartment building, can show up and they’ll handle it, do you use QQ? I can pass you their qq contact, or just give you specific location/description.. I don’t even think I have their #, just know the spot.

    @Ben
    That’s EXACTLY what I was waiting for. Reason:

    The Mi2 didn’t fit nicely into the wall ‘socket’ I measured to fit a 55″ of a different spec sometime before, think it had to do with the ‘rock tiling’ stuff added on, so it would have had too much of a lip, because the back of the bottom of it has a bit of a curvature that sticks out whereas the smaller version has a perfectly flat edge which actually fits nicer, just, smaller. So since it had that ‘extra lip’, in addition with the fact I saw TVs constantly going down (including Mi2 55″ by about 200yuan) quite quickly, decided to wait for the next iteration.

    I’m going to have to take a look at that as soon as I can – will see if they have anything on their site. The TV itself seemed great, minus the fact that the MiTV UI interface is exclusively Chinese (no English language option). My current Chengdu/GZ offices bought a bunch of MiTVs (49″ I think it was) for various display boards to hang up on walls, gave me a chance to play with the unit a bit and am definitely a fan.

    Update:
    http://www.mi.com/mitv3/
    Ah, wonderful, that price also includes an improved sound bar. “It uses a single Mi Cable to connect to the soundbar that has all the ports and also the motherboard.” That sounds fuckin’ amazing, means just 1 cable to pipe behind the wall thing and into the bar, everything else will hook up behind the devices cabinet… Happy November, this’ll be ready to greet Fallout 4! The edges also appear perfectly flat, should fit nicely into my little socket with that thin lip beyond.

    You can buy safe baby formula online, typically in the range of around 300rmb/tin, significant enough, depending on how much your baby consumes, to factor into budgeting.

    I think a large part of the problem is you’re planning on supporting a large family with 1 salary, so even though the salary isn’t too bad, it’s not a lot when considering it needs to support 2 adults and 3 kids without any perks, such as paid housing and/or insurance. I’m surprised the school wouldn’t offer ‘teacher housing’ of sorts, typically at an apartment on or near the university campus. The difficulty with negotiating with a university in this case is because you have greater needs to get by than say, a single person who would be perfectly fine on that salary..and the university may be in the mindset that because your family has larger needs doesn’t mean they should bump the remuneration package. If you’re having to budget all of the above, though, I’d say it will be *tough*, especially when considering all of the little things that make life worth living beyond the core necessities, like getting out of town occasionally and enjoying the restaurants or other fun things around town.

    Have you spent any time looking for some work yourself? I suppose it would be difficult with the kids – nannies aren’t cheap, for a single kid now a days they’re averaging around it seems 4k/month, but if I were in your shoes and had to cover all of the living expenses, plus be able to tuck some away incase anything comes up, would seriously consider the challenge and risk involved.

    That’s a pretty cheap flu shot, I think we had some hospital come to my office before and it was like 170/pp. Good info, it’s across the road from me, may take advantage of that. 😀 Thanks.

    What! Costco ships to China, that’s news. Just checked it out, and saw this:

    Yay. 😀 Thanks for the heads up.

    From Canada, I’ve had several items shipped via post. They often take an enormous amount of time, and occasionally never arrive. Still waiting on Xmas cards, for example. Never ship anything important via Canada Post – I would imagine US post has similar issues 😀 However, fedex/etc cost a lot more..but at least you are more likely to know where your things are/find out when they’re stuck somewhere/etc.

    I’m a fan of Express since switching over from StrongVPN a while back using Slemmer’s referral, easy to use, can switch servers freely, allows separate phone/computer connections simultaneously, and no speed issues streaming say, youtube or whatever. Oh, they also don’t care if you ‘accidently’ leave your torrenting software open when connected, unlike Strong which will send you a DMCA complaint.

    Yeh I can’t think of any use other than visa – and as such, if employer is taking care of your visa/etc it’s probably easier to leave it with them.

    what do you do if you “need to go” and there’s no service facilities along the road?

    Highways out of the city are speckled with convenience stops that have food, big (and from my experience relatively clean, surprisingly) bathrooms, gas stations etc. If you generally know when you’ll need to go in advance (minutes, not hours) you’ll typically be able to get by between stops.

    I’d buy one here.

    I bought a Seimens oven/microwave combo for like 6k rmb, but it is one that needs to be installed in the cupboards so I’d imagine you aren’t looking for one like that – this listing has some of various types, including standing ones. I’d imagine you don’t need anything over 60L?

    @Olsen

    That….is a WINNER! Not just for, like, basically disposable socks, but – baby socks. They have baby socks! For, like 5 mao each. My wife always complains when I let baby run around in socks and socks get dirty etc (which, even when they’re whatever they cost isn’t that big of a deal) but….. 5mao, they have pairs of baby socks for 5 MAO.

    Great find. I’m going to order many, many socks. And throw away many socks. 😀

    Most classic place I know is a pair of family run joints near tianfu square – one block south, at the end of the road..it’s next to a hostel (forget the name, classic place tho). On a map, it’s here:
