I’ll bring it over tonight Charlie. Yes it’s a Brooks Saddle. Vintage edition.

The guys picked it for me and found the perfect one I think.

Just picked up my ‘Vintage Forever Bike’ rebuild.

Single speed, reduced to the max.

Silky smooth ride. Could not be happier.

Rebuild was done to my specifications by the great guys from Natooke which I can highly recommend.

When I went to Mike’s (twice so far) there was no berating of employees at all only great ‘cheat day’ pizza.

I think it’s always best and fair to assume an exception if you experience something that irritates you, one time or perhaps carefully raise your concern with the restaurant owner before posting it on the intertubes.

On the other hand this is the modern world we live in and I can only imagine how tough it must be to open a food business which is under such tremendous scrutiny from day one with all the bitchy Yelpers out there and competitors disguising as guests writing negative reviews (which is why I mostly don’t trust reviews on the internet by the way).

    Speaking of Yelp.

    We shall see.

I tend to trust experts in their respective fields over those who are not, but I will inform you guys if your prophecies come true.

Anecdotal evidence is by definition anecdotal so i just add from my experience:

In my old compound in Beijing rats were poisoned, so were mice in my old office in London. It got the job done without the mentioned side effects.

It is mice not rats which is a great relief.

The expert told me that this is the best way forward so I am inclined to believe him. He also said the poison will dehydrate the mice and let them die at their main water source, and they will not rot in the regular way but dry out.

My only precaution to keep all potential water sources in my flat inaccesible (e.g. toilet lid down) because they get terribly thirsty after they had the poison.

After five to ten casualties the mice are smart enough to avoid my territory in the future.

Also went to Mandolino’s onm Saturday for lunch.

I saw the little stage for a band that might play there at night which would be a reason not to go there for me because I cant stand anything beyond very subtle background entertainment while eating.

The pizza is the classic style from Napoli only the dough lacks a certain type of typical flavour I know and cherish. But the slight burns on the edges the rustic appeal thats excactly what to expect

I give it a ‘pretty good’ and it’s decent in terms of pricing considering that to be pretty good mozarella they use. Should not really be compared with Mikes which is american style.

I also want to confirm that toppings and cheese on a pizza from Napoli is not evenly distributed. So that is normal and intended.

After 8 exhausting months of pleading threatening begging extortion attempts with the management office the landlord and the real estate agent that sold me on this “high standard executive level vip standard (or whatever) rodent infested sh..hole I have good news.

I finally managed to get a Century 21 employee (the third one actually who was running after fees that I held back until they got something done) made a simple phone call and 5 hours later a real pest control expert was in my flat laying out poison in strategic locations, telling me excactly what would happen the next few days (e.g. weird sounds of poisoned mice slowly dying which I can hear right now and which make me kind of sad).

When I asked the C-21 gy why this had to take 8 months and why as a last resort I had to threaten to never pay them their fees and why they in turn had to counter threaten me with lawyers for week after week instead of simply doing the right thing that took less than five minutes he only laughed. Which reminded me once again that I will never understand how things work here.

Anyway I have a contact now. Anyone in need can send me a PM.

Mike’s Pizza has a restaurant? I thought it was delivery only.

Yes seems to have recently opened in Tongzilin with four tables or so.

    On the Pizza debate:

Currently the best pizza in all of China is made by La Pizza in Beijing which is run by a guy from Napoli. Nothing I ever tasted in Chengdu comes even remotely close to that, not Mandolino, not Le Sud, not Mike.

But for the occasional craving Mike’s Pizza is perfectly suitable and the best in my opinion.

Its not a New York pizza and not an original from Napoli either. It’s somewhere in between.

Mikes Pizza just seemed to have raised the prices by roughly 20 percent. Its not that expensive but I was surprised nevertheless.

    320?

    Not impressed.

In Beijing it went way beyond 500 occasionaly.

After three years of training my lungs should be well adjusted to this ‘minor’ pollution. 😉

And this is still valid today:

“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

In my compound I haven’t paid them so far.

They keep sticking these bills to my door patiently.

But as of now I have no intention of paying them given my less than satisfying experience. They can’t even deal with the most simple matters, not to even mention the bigger ones like rat infestation.

All I got so far is those empty stares, where you immediately realize that nothing will happen ever.

Should they really try to collect it I will fight them.

I know what a good management office is able to do and I happily pay them for it. But if I am asked to pay for bored brats to doze away on their office chair 80% of the day I say: Thanks but no thanks.

Hm, having a little Chengdu moment here …..
