My Chinese GF is saying that 400 is Ok in Chengdu (for someone you are not super close with). Also need to consider your salary; if people know you’re raking in the big coin they expect more. She also mentioned that (fortunately for us) our lowainess is a license to be a little cheap 🙂

This highlights the problem Taobao will have: it’s gonna be very tough changing people’s perceptions of Taobao as a website of dubious products. Don’t get me wrong, I love Taobao and buy lotsa stuff on it. Anything electrical (or training supplements too) I’m very skeptical about and will look elsewhere…for example something like these

you would either be crazy or very trusting to buy on Taobao

I rip thru earbuds and these have lasted me for 9 months with no problems. I’m a big fan of Senns but the last pair of earbuds died after 6 weeks. They may have been fake 🙂

Wrong. If it loses it’s huge range (including fakes)then it loses it’s reason for existing, and other more reputable sites like JD step in. Taobao would become Myspace or Digg…..

Taobao was recently sued by the largest global luxury goods conglomerate (cant remember the name but I think they own Gucci or LV or Prada). This is pretty unprecedented. They’re also getting some heat after their NASDAQ listing and with the politicking in the US over future presidential candidates. In the past Taobao’s response has been “we are just the portal”….

@Goatboy: I got you beat. I’m the guy who is known for flipping the bird at local imbeciles and (according to what the security guards told my girlfriend) “never smiles or says hello” 🙂

Word on the street is that MS-13 running North ‘Du these days….?

Actually YuLin still has an old-school back-street vibe in some places. And bargains can be found too:
Bananas: 2.5 kuai for yi jin (sensational value!!!)
Lychees: 5 kuai for half a kilo
Buzzcut: 10 kuai (and a street dude who will do it for 7 (!!!)
Community bus: free (you gotta swipe, but it’s free!)

Ha ha buying a Black Flag t-shirt on taobao. Thinking “This is China. XXL is really like an L back home”. Ordering it. T-shirt arrives. It’s HUGE, like a dress. Contacting the seller, he responds “Yes, it’s for overseas markets. XXL is really XXL!” Nice guy, he said “Send it back, no problem”. Never did return it. That thing is BIG…

Come with an open mind, and realistic expectations. Not everyone loves it here; a buddy of mine visited and hated it. A 3 month visa is a good length of time to get some idea of this place. Without a degree a full-time legit teaching gig will be hard to get. Surprisingly, the authorities seem to be serious about enforcing this requirement. But lotsa part-time gigs available and most employers will not even ask you what visa you have.Bring a sense of humor with you…..

Some are good guys, all doing a dirty job. Earlier this year my GF left her phone (Iphone 5c) in a cab. Called the driver, he came back, returned the phone. I offered him 200 for his trouble and to reward his honesty. He absolutely refused to take it. And he seemed to have all his front teeth 🙂

My cat had a chicken bone lodged in his throat a few months ago. I was distraught (man-feelings big time) as I thought it was a stroke. Took him to a great place on 2nd ring road, close to the shuhan lu intersection. One of my students is a veterinarian there. Awesome service, immaculate hi-tech equipment. Very happy….stupid cat 🙂

@exphat: Physical at IFS has all that. The equipment is clean and in good condition. They also open at 8 AM (I was there 8 30 this morning and it was basically empty). However:
*it’s expensive. You need to bargain HARD with these guys
*stretching space is minimal. They are reluctant to let you use kettle bells/swiss balls/ TRX gear (that’s all in the “VIP” section)
*it can get stupid crowded in afternoons /evenings (that’s why i go early morning)

If you’re really concerned about cleanliness insist that the artist use a new needle. Even better, get the model number he/she uses and buy it yourself.
    http://s.taobao.com/search?q=tattoo+needle&commend=all&ssid=s5-e&search_type=mall&sourceId=tb.index&spm=a215z.7106357.5803581.d4908513
As you can see, they ain’t expensive. Because they’re so cheap, most legit artists here will be happy to oblige you. The professionnalism has improved markedly here in recent years.
