I would agree with some of the other guys about coming here and checking things out forst. Alot of the rules are flexible/outdated/grey/non-existent/infuriating. Same as for teaching; come here, put your toes in the water before you commit yourself too much. I do know that the rules re; educational facilities are pretty tough. A friend here opened a small English training centre and used a Chinese silent partner as the face of the school. It would be absolutely impossible for him to get the license without some kind of partnership/joint venture. Of course, this arrangement has its pros and cons. Some guys work with it well, but the horror stories are also numerous. Just go for it man. Good luck!

HZ: he’ll pull a crowd here. The Chinese websites and promotion will mention that he is a major international DJ, and the young guys in Chengdu will check it out. They know, as well as we do, how starved Chengdu is for major international talent. But dude, can 80’s hair-metallers-one-hit-wonders Extreme get people to Big Love festival.

Just two queries re Shadow: any idea how long the set will be? And by all reports his “shadowsphere” stage set up is spectacular. I wonder can the Xiongmao club accommodate this? Also remaining skeptically optimistic…

I mean the comfort factor. Is it big enough for the crowd Shadow is gonna pull?

When you say too small, are we talking Little Bar small (abit cramped) or are we talking “can’t move-gotta-get-out” small (ie. Old Little Bar)?

Yeah, he played Melbourne a few weeks ago and reports are good. The guy is pretty controversial and has some strong views about downloading and musical piracy. The Guardian had a great story/interview about a fortnight ago and the reader’s responses showed how he can polarise people. Looking forward to it…

Some places won’t charge a cover, but they’ll try the “you have to buy 24 (or sometimes 12) bottles if you take a table”. Last week a friend and i had this, but as soon as we made to leave, we were told it was Ok to order two bottles. Just depends how busy the place is i guess. An empty bar/club has to be pretty ballsy to knock back any $$$$….

Hemp House with their Chengdumusic parties has been charging 50 kuai for dj’s, bands, free micro-brew beer and BBQ. I reckon that’s pretty sensational value….

Sorry man, it was obviously a joke. I agree that this is a great forum. Having said that, the only thing that kills cool forums in China faster than malicious trolls is super-sensitive locals who act as thought police. If we gotta mince our words every time we post, this forum is absolutely dead in the water.

Again Bruce, it was a (lame) joke. Relax and have a nice day. Zhong guo jia you….

I paid 1950 kuai per square metre for a decent 2nd hand one just next to bookworm in 2004 (maybe 2005). Stupidly sold it 18 months later. Back then buying a place was a bit of a laugh, not the serious dough it is today. Pity the young chinese guys who MUST buy one. Happy to rent these days… (hence my single staus)…

Man, what’s the problem with the music? That sounds ominous…funny but i left KG a few years back primarily cos the music was ear-splittingly bad and loud, even by local standards. Jackson’s “Thriller” album on an endless loop…. actually KG’s not too bad when the temp’s below 30…..

If you’re into camping, def bring your own tent, sleeping bag, down jacket etc. Much of the camping gear here is of dubious quality, or is just an outright fake. It’s when you’re freezing your nuts off in a leaky tent that you realize this. Now, finding a camping ground in china…that’s a whole new problem…

I checked out Uniqlo yesterday. Gotta agree with Charlie; for simple good quality stuff (with no labels!) its pretty cool (even for a long-legged stork like me). As with HZ, i’ve found Decathlon to be lousy. Never heard of any of those brands, and the range was nothing special.

Strangely enough, the North gate of Chuan Da is hottie central. Often meet a friend there, and the talent is ridiculous. If he’s late, i don’t mind waiting at all. Sometimes he doesn’t even turn up, but that’s fine too…..

Man, if you need a sauna/steam room KG-Miracle gym is the place: the whole gym is a sauna!

Here’s my “Groundhog Day” routine: start cardio warm-up. Sweat like an absolute pig. Ask the guy (playing computer games) to please open one (just one!) overhead A/C vent. Wait. Continue dripping sweat. Go back. Ask again. Wait. Take off my disgusting sweat-soaked tank top. I know this breaks the “no shirtless” rule. Quickly a guy will approach me and point to the sign. Tell the guy “no AC, no shirt”. Like magic, AC kicks in. Next join the huddle, as refugee-like, 3 or 4 of us stand under the lone vent in search of some relief….day after day….call me Bill Murray…as predictable as a cloudy Chengdu day….

sorry, more grim news (soembody tell tigerkuma to fuck off!). its not as simple as eating fruits and vegies, eggs and meat. One serious drawback of Chinese fruits and vegies are the low levels of selenium, which has been linked to cancer prevention and general well-being. its nothing insidious or pollution -related (large areas of the US are also selenium deficient). Large parts of China just drew the short straw and are low in selenium. It can also be found in fish and tuna and meat that has been fed from selenium -enriched grains (needless to say, that’s not the case here in China). As I mentioned in an earlier post, i aint no expert, just had my coat pulled recently. A nutritionist buddy suggested if i take nothing else in China, i should at least take some fish oil supps (found a reliable source) to compensate for the lack of selenium here. For you lifters, its also been shown to be beneficial for muscle growth. And no, i don’t work in this field, and i will not try to sell you any.
