I,m not sure about getting a personal trainer here, and some of the “trainers” i’ve seen at the fancy gyms have some pretty unorthodox methods Eg. arched back, feet not anchored when benching, crazy hip-bending, no hydrating pre or during training. These days the web has lotsa good sites for getting started or finding a suitable training program. One webiste that i’ve used is http://www.netfit.co.uk. This has beginner and more advanced regiments.
A trainer can motivate you but a good gym buddy is just as important (and much cheaper!). Finally, going to the gym is like cooking; everybody has their own opinions and preferences and what works for others may not be your cup of tea..
Yeah, there is a north face shop amongst all those outdoor stores on Yihuan Lu, just near the ren min nan lu intersection. Their prices are super high, cos the sales assistants insist that the stuff is real. I’m no expert on fakes, but as with all those camping shops (and the ones around wuhou jie), buyer beware…
You may also have trouble getting reliable whey protein (if you take it). i spent alot of cash on one brand called Giant Muscles, but i was skeptical about it after someone suggested that it may be adulterated or even fake. i had it tested by a friend who works for the dept. that tests these things, and while not fake, the report said that it was highly adulterated and from a “poor source”. I’m still looking for a 100% reliable source…Man, i wish they had GNC stores here, those places are awesome…
BTW: You need to soak fruits and veg to remove the pesticides and other nasties. I use a brand of dishwashiing liquid which aparently is awesome for this, and completely safe. i soak them for about half an hour.
Good luck man!
My ex-girlfriend bought an Amway one for about 8000 kuai (yeah, it’s pretty pricey!) for her parents. it’s super hi-tech but alot of people are skeptical about the effectiveness of an air purifier. What happens in summer? You gonna leave the windows closed? Never gonna go outside? Check out google and you’ll see alot of conflicting opinions about their usefulness…
Just got one at China Merchant’s bank. pretty simple, need 50,000 kuai to open the account, and if the balance drops below that the penalty is only 10 kuai a month. All the paperwork’s in Chinese. man, I REALLY need one of those Pleico OCR’s…..
Man, i’ve been going to the gym at Sichuan uni. for 3 years. it is absolutely NOT a girly gym (no shower, no energy shakes or hi-tech equipment). It’s truly a no-frills, old school, free -weight gym (sure you’ll have guys staring endlessly into the mirrors, but that’s China). I’ve been to fancy gyms which look great, until you realize that they don’t have, say, a 20 kg dumb bell. Also, some well-known gyms have gone broke over the years here; people rock up for their work out, only to find the doors locked!
P.S _ if you go to the Chuan Da gym in the morning or early afternoon, you’ll oten be the only one there. Nights can be a bit crowded with the staring-into-the-mirror boys….
