For the week of Monday, April 20th, the Chengdu film club will be screening (at Machu Picchu 2):

    Tuesday (21st), Documentaries: Whores’ Glory

Wednesday (22nd), Chinese Alternative: Here, Then (此处与彼处)

Sunday (26th), Hollywood Hangover: The Grand Budapest Hotel

ALL FILMS BEGIN AT 7:30 P.M. ON THE DATES SHOWN UNLESS OTHERWISE MENTIONED.

    Whores’ Glory

…is a 2011 documentary by Michael Glawogger. It shows the life of prostitutes from three different cultures: Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico. There is nudity but the tone is not exploitative. Not exactly “tastefully done”, but nothing that will offend your senses either. Very well-done documentary that doesn’t get much play due to the sensitive subject matter.

    —89% on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/whores_glory_2011/)

—Venice Film Festival 2011: Orizzonti Special Jury Prize and Austrian Film Awards 2012 for Best Documentary and Best Cinematography.

    Here, Then (此处与彼处)

…is a film set in a remote Chinese village where an entire lost generation of youngsters each are waiting patiently for their fate to roll around the corner and send them in the right direction. In other words, the majority of the human race, in a Chinese nutshell.

    —4/5 stars on Cine-vue (http://www.cine-vue.com/2013/06/dvd-review-here-then.html)

—Best International Film at the 2013 Edinburgh International Film Festival.

    The Grand Budapest Hotel

…is Wes Anderson at it again with his mob of star actors who follow him around everywhere he goes, beating people up with bats. This time around its the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune. Much more entertaining than most of Anderson’s stuff (coming from a guy who moderately to severely dislikes most of Anderson’s stuff).

    —92% on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_grand_budapest_hotel/)

    —4/4 stars on RogerEbert.com (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-grand-budapest-hotel-2014)

Basically, the genre schedule is as follows: Sunday = Hollywood Hangover, Monday = Game of Thrones, Tuesday = documentaries, Wednesday = Chinese Alternative.

Wednesday night at 7:30 we’ll be showing UFO in Her Eyes.

From the wiki: “Premiered at Toronto Film Festival, UFO In Her Eyes is a cinematic adaptation of her most recent novel of the same title. The film stars Shi Ke and Udo Kier and is a political metaphor recounted through the phantasmagoric transformation that befalls a small Chinese village after an alleged UFO sighting. Inspired by Soviet cinema, Xiaolu Guo dedicated this film to Soy Cuba, a 1964 Soviet-Cuban film directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. The movie’s score is composed by the SomaliCanadian musician Mocky and produced by German-Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin. It received the Public Award at Milan 3-Continental Film Festival 2013.

We’ll put the schedule up soon. I have a file I tried to attach that is the poster we’re using this month, but the file size was too big apparently and computer-prowessed I am not.

The fifth season of the fantasy drama television series is finally upon us, fine folk of Chengdu. It adapts material from A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, the fourth and fifth novels in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series, and turns them into glorious spectacles of skull-crushing and orgy-having with generous portions of blood spilled in between.

Machu Picchu 2 will be showing each new episode from April 13th on at 9 p.m. with the last episode before it preceding it at 8 p.m. (in which case here would be the Season 4 finale)  If you need to brush up on who’s f*cking who, literally and metaphorically, take a good, long gander at the wiki (http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wiki) and hopefully we’ll see you at Machu.

    Oh, and…

    FREE POPCORN! (BOOM)

    15 YUAN OFF PIZZAS! (POW)

Take that 1-2 combo and put it in your gullet, fine folks.

I’m also unsure as to how seating works, if they have a similar system to sports games in the States, with the 100 200 300 levels and such.  So if anybody has the scoop on that, holler at a brother if you see him in the street.

I don’t think there’d be any deals to season tickets, I’ve asked some friends.  They might just sell you however many tickets you want multiplied by the number of home games, which I think is 17.

A few years back he admitted to drinking Hennessy at the half times of games as a rookie. He said it was because the bulls lost so often.

The mans eccentric to say the least. Hopefully he lasts more than a year, it’d be fun to see him out at the Chengdu clubs mackin on the locals. No idea why they’re called the Blue Whales. You can buy their jerseys online, but just Tshirt jerseys and the logo isn’t too 好看. I will be plundering the resale shops for his old Chicago jersey though before I come back.

And yeah, he changed his name to Metta World Peace a few years ago and now he’s going to change it to Panda Friend because you know, the man just loves himself a cute cuddly panda. And really who can blame him.

Due to scheduling issues, Brew and View was on hiatus for a couple weeks, but now returns, taking over the Game of Thrones timeslot on Monday nights. And keeping with the theme of cult classics from different countries, we’re going to throw a Korean film, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, on the ol’ projector tonight. From the same guy who made Oldboy, this film follows a mother wrongly accused of murder and her subsequent taking-names, kicking-asses of those who are to blame. Park Chan-wook is the man, this we know, so come bask in the majesty at 8 p.m. TONIGHT at Machu Picchu. (Same discounts on pizza as on Game of Thrones night.)

So there you have it, complete with code. Run Lola Run tonight at 8 p.m.  Game of Thrones is taking a break this week for Memorial Day.

Yeah sorry about that Callum. Machu has had band gigs apparently scheduled for these Sundays for many many months, since before we started the Brew and View. There’s another band playing tonight, but next Sunday should be business as usual. We will be showing Run Lola Run, a classic of German making, of which I’ll have more details about later.

    Nice cat, Ray.

Forgot to mention we will have chinese subtitles as well. No room for English ones though, you’ll have to use your robust imaginations. Or just drink every time you’re confused about what’s going on, a wonderful concept that also conveniently applies to everyday life.

Just kidding about the family film thing by the way. Under no circumstances should you bring your child to see this movie. Well, one circumstance is if they wear earmuffs and a blindfold. Then I suppose it’d be alright.
