Hey Charlie, sure please come and bring your friends. It won’t be an advanced Javascript talk so it should be relevant.
What kind of web development do you do?
trudatParticipantA friend and I started a monthly web tech meetup called The Chengdu Cloud Club. We’ve had four meetings so far. Topics have been:
* Software as a Service
* Building a Ruby on Rails app in 30 minutes
* web tech biz idea brainstorm workshop
* search engine optimization
PM me your email address and I’ll send you info on the next meeting which will be on Tuesday, August 30 at 7pm.
The topic is yet to be set but will probably be on Javascript.
The meetup is in both Mandarin and English.
trudatParticipanttrudatParticipantThey’ll want copies of your passport info page, the Chinese visa page and the contract. The first time you go, they might be nice to you and make the copies for you. Afterwards though you’ll probably need to make the copies before going.
trudatParticipantI’ve been to KaffeStugen. Pretty nice, yummy, not cheap.
Anyone want to help me map out these wifi hangouts on my Google Map? I found Little Bar.
Sasha, where’s that place you mentioned? I’d like to check it out.
If anyone wants to help me map spots, IM me and I’ll make you a collaborator on the map.
trudatParticipantHey Charlie, I develop a web app which is a membership database combined with a content management system for publishing a website which is developed using PHP, MySQL and Javascript. My friend has a source code versioning service. His framework of choice is Ruby on Rails. Thanks for showing this to your developer friends.
trudatParticipantBased on your comments a friend and I took the bus to the 九眼桥北 bus stop. Maybe we got off at the wrong stop. I asked some guy where I can buy used bikes he told us to go down and ask someone at the corner. We ended up somewhere over here, when a man and a woman asked us if we were looking to buy bikes. They took us down an alley past a mahjong gambling den into a small room with a bunkbed and about 8 bikes. They closed the door and the guy promptly started puffing on a cigarette asking how much we wanted to spend. We didn’t end up buying from him. He wanted 400 something kuai for an 18 speed bike. We wandered around looking for the real used bike lot you all are talking about. Couldn’t find it. We ended up a long ways away at Chunxilu and Tianfu square. Finally we ended up at TrustMart and I bought a cheap-o brand new bike for 199 kuai.
trudatParticipantThanks, Charlie. Just asked our ayi. She said she saw fireworks on sale on the street yesterday. Should be interesting to see how much more fireworks there are here during Chunjie as compared to Hawaii (where I’m from) at New Years.
trudatParticipantI always just take the photos myself with a digital camera and then use this website to generate the image file for free and then print it out cheap (15 kuai).
trudatParticipantI read that Foxconn is going to start producing the iPad in Chengdu. Wonder if they’ll end up on the grey market?
I’m waiting for the 2nd gen iPad, which hopefully will have front and back cameras.
trudatParticipantLOL…good one. It was for my wife.
trudatParticipantCharlie, where do you live and are you in a newer building? I’ve had the worst speed earlier this month.
trudatParticipantIn case any one is looking for this later like I was, you can get it at the 大世界 Carrefour in the import section. It’s cranberry juice from Europe.
26.60 RMB for a 1 liter carton.
trudatParticipantThanks! I like maps.
By Gaoxin Qu, do you mean the high tech zone where there is the Tianfu software park? I haven’t been down there yet.
trudatParticipantThanks, Charlie. I just checked out TaoBao. Lots of selection. And I figured out how to filter down to just Chengdu sellers. How do you figure out the seller’s address or phone number?
Matt, I just went to the UNIQLO yesterday and got some stuff. There are two stores over there. A small one is in the 3rd floor of the Ito Yokado and a big store with lots more selection is nearby. I mapped it here.
It was my first time in the area. Cool place. Swensen’s was yummy.
trudatParticipantHey Charlie,
I work mostly from home. But I am starting to discover places to work with free wifi. Finally made it to the Starbucks on Jinxing Road where there is a Carrefour. I’m slowly mapping places on my Google Map as I find them. Where is Gaoxin Qu? I would be great to meet another web developer.
Truman
trudatParticipantThanks for your replies, everyone.
Charlie, is there a blog post about how to use TaoBao? I’m not quite sure where to start.
trudatParticipanttrudatParticipantI have my own apartment now and sadly China Telecom was only able to provide me with a 2M ADSL connection. They said that if I was just in the next tower in my apartment complex (which houses two internet cafes) that I could have gotten a faster connection. Oh well.
Thanks for the tip about slow connections between western China and Hong Kong. Interesting. When I tried to do a test to the HK server the test could not complete because the latency check timed out! I also couldn’t complete a test to Los Angeles because the upload portion never finished.
Here’s a test between my place and London:
Upload is almost nil.
