Exciting and disgusting to read at the same time.
Talk about KTV girls, I randomly met one on the street recently and we started hitting it off on WeChat. What are the chances she “sometimes does other stuff the client asks for”?
Also funny that on one hand she doesn’t really want to say what’s actually going on and then mentions in the next sentence she once had to SM one of her clients. Or meet them outside of the KTV.
This literally makes me sad and horny at the same time. I don’t want this for those girls. I just want it to be me.
March 25, 2013 at 10:07 pm #28884CharlieKeymasterA lot of this was vague – not disgusting at all really. It can be tough in China for unskilled workers or even sometimes for college graduates.
March 26, 2013 at 12:06 am #28885JerrySParticipantPretty woman, walking down the street….
I can honestly say i been to a KTV less than 5 times in 1.5 years, quite low no? But yeah, it’s hard to live a suitable life in China with no skills of any kind.
March 26, 2013 at 1:12 am #28889VincentParticipantQuote:I can honestly say i been to a KTV less than 5 times in 1.5 years, quite low no?I have never been to a KTV before, and I’ve been here for 2 years 🙂 5 times in 1.5 years is almost every 3 months, you are hooked bro. How often do you meet the girls outside of the KTV? What’s the price?
Quote:A lot of this was vague – not disgusting at all really.Really? My imagination gets filled with these pictures of young Chinese girls that end up in that business and eventually get (psychologically) half forced to **** dirty business men’s ****. That article screams paid sex imo. What else can they mean with these statements:
1) sing and dance if they want us to, and sometimes other stuff that they ask for.
2) He wanted to get hit while being called a bad boy.
3) worse things being requested.
4) If a client really likes me and wants to see me outside of the KTV, I can do that too.
What do you think they would do outside of the KTV? Play badminton?
Don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to read between the lines I’d say.

My imagination gets filled with these pictures of young Chinese girlsYour imagination is disgusting, not this demure account of a KTV hostess. I’m not saying that sex is not involved, I’m saying that although it’s implied, she doesn’t mention a single sex act or anything even remotely disgusting in the entire story.
March 26, 2013 at 3:13 am #28901BrendanModeratorDepressing!
March 26, 2013 at 3:23 am #28906JerrySParticipantShe did mention she could not go back to a ‘simple’ life style from her home town, after being ‘treated’ with such luxury by men. Old world vs New world. Very depressing because of how values are now changing.. What happened to the old China that we use to know and love that was depicted in Chung-Li’s stage?
March 26, 2013 at 3:40 am #28911DriesParticipantLet’s not be naive here, everybody knew long before this article what goes on in these KTV’s where they have “hostesses”. If you have done a bit of business in China you have ended up in one of these places one time or another. I have seen several times what goes on when you go there with Chinese business men and it’s not just drinking and singing. Anyone who believes that should come out of his habit of watching the Teletubbies all evening and come out to the real world.
In my opinion the difference between these hostesses and prostitutes is that these KTV’s girls can choose whether to go home with someone or not and a hooker will go home with anyone who pays.
March 26, 2013 at 3:49 am #28913Ben BrownParticipantI don’t see that as terribly depressing. I’ve been to tons of KTV bars with my friends. The guys I go with invite girls to come with them rather than participate in what is essentially an escort service. I don’t partake in this form of semi-legal money-for-pleasure thing, but what she discusses in vague terms could cover the whole spectrum. For the most part it’s up to her to decide what she does and does not want to do. Is it ideal? No.
I spent nearly two years as a Mandarin-speaking CSR in Minneapolis, MN. I had just graduated with a Master’s in International Business but couldn’t find a job (not for lack of effort. I applied to well over 500 positions in less than 18 months).
I put up with my own form of being abused for money and for a living. I didn’t have to remove articles of clothing for money, but I regularly had to apologize to bosses I didn’t agree with when I knew I was in the right.
The thing that’s disgusting to some of us has to do with our perceptions of what is over the line. We all have personal moral boundaries and ethical standards that differ. She looks to what for her is a bright future. Could I do her job? Never. Do I compromise my values for a brighter future? Daily.
But then I go have a beer at Natooke or I eat hot pot in Chongqing with old friends and forget about it. Kind of like when she goes to get xiaoye with her friends afterward. She has dreams, goals, and understands what she’s doing. I can’t find fault in that. Instead, I try to stay away from people who utilize that type of service so I don’t have to actively participate in it.
March 26, 2013 at 3:58 am #28915DriesParticipantWell said, Ben
March 26, 2013 at 4:12 am #28917BrendanModeratorQuote:Let’s not be naive hereJust to clarify my own one line quip, and to avoid any other moral infringements or sensitivities, my personal view of this girls account is that she, like many many other girls in similar positions, either by choice or circumstance, necessity or misguidance, is locked into a depressing existence that’s fueled by an acceptance among society. This isn’t even a Chinese equation really either, it just happens that we’re commenting on a Chinese girl working in an all too common situation. I’ve been around these situations myself, but have always chosen to exit as soon as anything like this is apparent. Not the moral high ground, just my personal preference.
As for comparative and compromise, I think we can be thankful that most of us haven’t had to make the choices girls like this have to make in an effort to ‘get ahead’.
Now where did I put those rose tinted shades…
March 26, 2013 at 4:53 am #28921Rick in ChinaParticipantQuote:with no skills of any kindI wouldn’t say no skills, just likely not the kind people use on resumes…. 😉
March 26, 2013 at 4:59 am #28922Ben BrownParticipantHeh heh. I don’t disagree with you in the slightest, Brendan. I think a lot of girls, in China, the US and the rest of the universe, are put into these situations either by choice or lack thereof. In the context of that particular article, I commend the girl for looking to a brighter future. Granted, going from dependent on an escort* job to going dependent on the probably slimeball one meets at such a job isn’t ideal by a long shot. But I have friends over here who were in that line of work years ago and are now successful, educated people. They went through some crap for awhile and emerged whole.
Of course, if I remove the rose tinted shades I was wearing as I typed that last sentence, it exposes the plethora of women who ended up addicted to opium or contracting HIV. I am very thankful I haven’t had to make that choice to get ahead. Very. Seriously. Grateful.
March 26, 2013 at 7:06 am #28927Chris ZiichModeratorThe girl does make BANK by Chinese standards though. (Average of 300 per party, about 3 parties a night, about 4 nights a week = over 3k RMB per week, not including any “extra” services). That’s quadruple my salary.
Her situation isn’t that much different from a stripper’s.
March 26, 2013 at 7:08 am #28928Ben BrownParticipantChris, every time I look at your avatar pic it makes me smile. Can’t disagree with the math either. She could be my Sugar Mama. ha.
March 26, 2013 at 8:53 am #28936CharlieKeymasterQuote:She looks to what for her is a bright future. Could I do her job? Never. Do I compromise my values for a brighter future? Daily. This is an honest way to look at it. Thanks Ben.
I love how this thread transformed from something completely superficial and nonsensical into a discussion with considerable depth.
Quote:she, like many many other girls in similar positions, either by choice or circumstance, necessity or misguidance, is locked into a depressing existence that’s fueled by an acceptance among society.I think that our (expats) presence is China is favorable for us in many ways, but China can be forgiving to average Chinese who aren’t there by choice. Chengdu is a friendly place, but cities on the each coast in general are very competitive and cut throat. Especially Shenzhen, Guangzhou, etc for all of the
migrant workers who travel there from all across China seeking a better future.
Quote:The girl does make BANK by Chinese standards though.Yeah, this is a major point. She chooses to be there because it’s working for her for now. It sounds like she has a real shot at getting out in a few years after having made enough money to make a difference in her life.
April 12, 2013 at 1:46 pm #29913LiamParticipantJust found this in a classified ad:
