It is, this bike is awesome. It’s too big for her and too small for me though, so it’s a goldilocks bike for someone who wants a custom fixed gear for cheap.

I don’t know why I see so many mountain bikes and so few road bikes in the city. The roads are maintained pretty well and there are zero hills. Mountain bikes seem like a terrible choice for Chengdu; they’re heavy, slow and bulky. Meanwhile a single speed or fixed gear is perfect; light, quick and low maintenance.

If you’re going on trips out of the city, mountain bikes may be fun, but if you’re looking for a city commuter, mountain bikes suck.

I agree – no one rides on trails, yet mountain bikes are the “go-to” bike for bike enthusiasts in China. The fixed gear and road bike community in Chengdu is loyal but very small.

Of course what you guys said above is still purely theoretical…

Mountain bikes are made to be ridden off-road, which is why they have chunky tires and shocks – but everyone seems to select mountain bikes for city biking in Chengdu even though there are no hills or off-road trails. We do not understand why – maybe you can explain?

You throw slicks on a hybrid mountain bike (i use 1.5 width) and it’s a fast awesome machine, even on base models. First thing i did with my new bike was remove the wide tyres. The extra weight of suspension forks is pretty negligible these days(when i did messenger work in college i removed my suspension forks, barely noticed the difference). The mountain bikes you see guys riding are hybrids; downhill or cross country bikes are totally different. Agreed though: the roads in Chengdu are generally very good, and there are basically no hills, so fixed gear is fine…..

Good points Ray. I don’t recall ever seeing a mountain bike in Chengdu that fits that description but that makes a lot of sense.

I’m about to move to Chengdu and I’m going to miss my road bike.

Do you guys know if there’s a bike shop in Chengdu?

There are small bicycle corner shops which do basic repairs all over the city in every neighborhood. They sell locks and small accessories and do basic repairs. There are also bicycle enthusiast shops like mountain biking shops and street bike shops with a few fixed gear shops also. Recently I’ve heard about a new fixed gear shop in my neighborhood (Yulin) and an American who’s opening a bike shop in Chengdu also.

Interested in getting around on two wheels but not ready yet to bite and pay the full price for one of our custom rigs?  Well you’re in luck.  We pieced a bike together with some old parts (and new ones of course!) and are looking to make it move (literally, figuratively).

New frame, pedals, brake, hub and freewheel (this bike is not a fixed gear!)  Wheels newly handbuilt by our new guy (and we found out he’s pretty good!).

Old parts include smaller bits and pieces, as well the cranks (gear in the front) and the saddle.  Otherwise in surprisingly sharp aesthetic condition and of course it’s built to the same spec as all our other bikes so it rides brand new.

Also includes our complete post-purchase service (free tuneups, a joke or two, maybe a cup of coffee or a beer depending on the time of day).

Stop in.  PM.  E-mail ([email protected]). Call (18684028937).  Whatever! Get a jump on spring and get your legs up to snuff for when the weather changes and you want to be out riding about soaking it in.

Oh, and did I mention?  We love you!

    Full Bike

    Crank scratches
