My girlfriend’s iPhone has failed while she’s in the US taking a 3 month education course.  She uses and needs her iPhone for everything.

Is there any reason why she can’t buy an iPhone while in the US and then use it as normal when she returns home to Chengdu?

I assume it would need to be what is called an “unlocked” model??

She and I are not “techies”, her English isn’t great, and I’m not in USA to assist her (I live in NZ), so any answers will need to be explained very clearly.

    Much appreciated

It should work. Buy at the Apple Store and not for a specific carrier and that should work fine. You can also ask people at the Apple Store and they should be able to confirm. I believe that new iPhones don’t have the cellular band compatibility issues that previous ones did 2-3 or more years ago.
