If there’s ever been a saint walking among us, it is probably Dr. Ray Pinniger. For the past 40 years Dr. Pinnegar has dedicated her life to helping the needy in the poorest corners of the earth. She has spent many years living in the rural communities she is helping, including areas of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, and helped establish modern medicine and sanitation services for the people there.

Blue Sheep is one of her projects, which she initiated here in Chengdu. Dr. Pinniger approaches severely disadvantaged and sick people from disaster struck areas and poor rural communities, largely filled with ethnic minorities, and trains them in arts and crafts. Selling these handcrafts has helped these people maintain a basic standard of living, provided basic needs for them and their families, and in turn, kept them from begging in the streets.

In order to keep them working and motivated, Blue Sheep pays on receipt of products so craftsmen do not have to wait until the product is sold for payment .

Blue Sheep is now opening its shop in Chengdu (add:A Qu Gao Hua 2 Jie No.35, behind the Roman Square Trust Mart) and is designated to be a one-stop gift shop. For fair prices you will have the chance to buy unique, handicrafts in a variety of authentic styles (6 different minorities) and furthermore support the craftsmen that need it most. Any profit generated from this project will be transferred to NGOs and reinvested in the communities to do more good.

Currently, over 500 people are being helped in this way. However, selling these handicrafts is essential for sustaining the project, and currently without a lot of exposure, this responsibility falls on Dr. Pinniger’s shoulders. The crafts stock up and the project keeps costing Dr. Pinniger money.

And so, on August 2nd, The Spot will host Dr. Pinniger and Blue Sheep for an exhibition of the arts and crafts, in order to familiarize more people with the project. The exhibition will be held next Saturday (Aug 2), from 12:00 until 18:00. At 16:00 Dr. Pinniger will take the stage and present her project. During exhibition hours, The Spot will be serving complimentary snacks and soft drinks, and will offer other menu items for half price.
Hundreds of people’s lives depend on the Blue Sheep project and its support, but its success depends on us, the people of Chengdu, and our support to keep it going.
