What’s the deal with medical/dental insurance/assistance etc. for foreign nationals residing in mainland China? Are any of you having to purchase annual policies, and if so with whom, what’s the coverage and expense, etc.

I’m also wondering if as a British national whether or not I would still be able to receive medical care in Hong Kong, without having to pay for it?

    Any info appreciated.

I don’t personally know any foreigners in Chengdu who (to my knowledge) have health insurance. If you indulge in some kind of dangerous activity (eg ride motorcycles, skydive, etc) getting health insurance seems necessary but otherwise the cost of medical care in Chengdu is low enough to eliminate the need for health insurance. Not that it wouldn’t be nice to have in case of catastrophic injury, etc.

I’m not 100% positive but I doubt you’d have access to free medical care in Hong Kong after it was handed back to China.
