Last Sunday we watched the 1979 bicycle film Breaking Away and this week we’re watching the modern Chinese classic Let the Bullets Fly:

The movie will be presented in Chinese with English subtitles! This is our first time watching a movie in Chinese, so it should be interesting with a largely Chinese crowd. This movie also takes place in Sichuan!

    About Let the Bullets Fly

Since its release this year, Let the Bullets Fly has been lauded across the globe for its stunning mix of dark comedy and eye-popping violence. In China, this action-comedy starring Chow Yun-Fat has become the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.

Set in 1920s Sichuan, the film tells the tale of the bandit “Pocky” Zhang Mazi, who poses as a local governor in a dusty town- but finds himself at odds with the local mobster, who is not eager to share his turf with another drifter. A complex and deadly series of mind-games ensues between the two crooks, which are as violent as they are hilarious. The rare foreign-language comedy that translates without a hitch, Let the Bullets Fly will have you falling out of your seat with laughter.

    Here’s the trailer on Youtube:

    About the Banana Boat

The Banana Boat is our completely mobile music and movie setup, built into a rickshaw. We cycle somewhere, stop, and within 5 minutes we’re watching movies or playing music.

A photo of the first outdoor movie night where we watched The Karate Kid:

The location is in the Yulin neighborhood, about a 2 minute walk away from the Laoma Tou Hotpot Restaurant. The name of the alley that we’ll be on is ???? and if you search for it on Baidu or Google Maps you should see where it’s located.

Or if you have a bicycle, ride to the location with us from the Natooke Bicycle Shop at 7:30pm. Arrive at 7pm if you can!

Is it happening if it’s raining?

The place where we’ll watch this has pretty good tree cover but if it’s raining hard, we will reschedule. It drizzled when we watched Rush Hour a few weeks ago but it stopped quickly and it didn’t seem to affect the audience too much. Weather report says we’re clear until 1am and it’s pretty dry outside now, so fingers crossed.

The movie night in its current location has grown a nice group of regulars that definitely add to the atmosphere.  Add on top of that a comedic film that is sure to pique everyone’s interest and it should be a killer time.  Really looking forward to this!

Sadly our projector overheated last night while watching this! A real shame too since the crowd for this was gigantic. In light of everyone’s interest in completing this movie properly, we’re going to give it another shot next Sunday at 8pm. We’ll have a new projector as well as a backup next time, too.

Fortunately, when we stopped the movie we listened to music, drank beer, and played frisbee in a big circle. Good times regardless. Thanks everyone who came out. Next week might be our last time at this particular location, so don’t miss it!
