After many pains – here is what I think is the easiest way to register for a Sina Weibo account when you don’t read a word of Chinese – see this video I found on Youku
There was an earlier version of the same video tutorial that claimed that there is an English signup menu on Weibo http://www.weibo.com/signup/mobile.php?lang=en-us but it does not seem to be working anymore for some reasons.
Awesome, this is helpful info. I know that recently they started requesting national identification numbers upon registration, which I heard you can bypass by using a friend’s ID (even if they’re already registered on Weibo).
Good luck with registering, but to be honest if you don’t understand Chinese, then you’re probably not going to enjoy using weibo that much! Good study resource though! 🙂

I see more and more foreigners on Chengdu, I know there are at least a few dozen in Chengdu. If you check Weibo everyday in your free time there’s no question that your Chinese will improve! You also learn a lot of pop culture Chinese that you won’t find in books.
This thread prompted me to sign up for an account. It wasn’t too hard using the Perapera Chinese plug-in on the Firefox browser which translates any character shown in a tooltip.
Signing up with a VPN didn’t require any person ID number.
