There are a bunch of tips for self study on the Chengdu Living Series page, but if you’re looking for private instruction there’s Mandarin Club and Chinese Corner. I checked out both last year and preferred Mandarin Club, personally.
Choose a Chinese movie that you like, download the movie line, remember those words and sentences which you will use in your life, and then use them when you talk with Chinese local.
Socialize and open your ears – I learned Chinese 100% from social situations and it seems to have worked fine. Getting out and putting some conscious effort into trying to listen to patterns and watching body language kinda simulates how babies pick up language quickly so I figure it’s the most natural route 😀
Anywhere to help you understand the local dialect?
Taxi’s, tea houses, noodle restaurants, massage shops! Spend enough time in Chengdu and you will pick up Sichuan dialect, no question. It is spoken everywhere.
It depends on what kind of learner you are. Some thrive in a formal education setting, others flounder. If the pressure of class assignments and the structure of a curriculum helps you learn, do that. If you’re motivated to learn on your own with books, the internet, and interacting with Chinese people, that will definitely work also.
