Genuinely stoked for this movie. Critics and audience ratings are (sky) high, and the movie’s cinematography reminds me of my favourite Bond film ‘A View To A Kill’. Bardem even reminds of Christopher Walken’s ‘Max Zorin’.
Skyfall also now has the distinction of being the most successful Bond movie in history, having smashed passed all previous with over $1bn worldwide, before it’s even gotten to China! I’ve been told the movie is set for January 15th release date. Even the British Consulate are pushing this with an Aston Martin dressed opening night in Chongqing.
Who else will be catching this!? I’m curious to see how well it’s going to do in China, particularly since the government pushed the release back to make way for movies like 1942 (god awful long).
January 4, 2013 at 3:29 am #25220CharlieKeymasterI can’t wait to see this either, everyone says it’s incredible. I’m already a fan of bond films anyway, and I prefer the Daniel Craig era to the Pierce Brosnan era for sure. The new Lumiere Pavilions theater in Raffles City would be a great place to check this out.
I’m also really hoping to see Django Unchained in the theater but I’m guessing that the chances of that seeing theatrical release here are slim.

January 4, 2013 at 3:33 am #25221JerrySParticipantHmm… Not a Borne spy flick… I think ill pass, i never seen any Bond films. Though i seen Austin Powers, which is Bond’s smaller dyslexic brother, great stuff.

If so how was it?I did see it, and it was entertaining in a pass the time kind of way, but the movie itself doesn’t really have too much of a plot, and it stretches to two and a half hours. It’s a well made movie though, with appearances from Adrien Brody as an American journalist & Tim Robbins as a missionary.
Quote:I think ill pass, i never seen any Bond films.I can’t even begin to tell you how much you’ve missed out. I find it hard to imagine you going to see this Bond movie and not enjoying it.
January 4, 2013 at 4:07 am #25223RayParticipantlet’s get a group-buy thing happening for skyfall. get enough people and tix wil be cheap…apparently locals don’t talk too much in cinemas anymore. I don’t know, had some bad experiences: (phone rings) : “wei!! I’m in the cinema! I dont understand this movie! What are you doing later? Oh really….”
January 4, 2013 at 4:36 am #25224Rick in ChinaParticipantI was back in Canada last month – and as for the latest movies, Skyfall was *great* fun. I didn’t like the last couple Bond films so much, but this one was by far the best and most enjoyable of all the previous ones….most definitely worth seeing in theatre.
The Hobbit – I saw it first in 2D, then a week later in 3D (iMax), absolutely by and far better in 3D. I’d recommend not downloading the DVD screener available now and waiting to see it in full glory in 3D in the theatre, but understand why some just can’t wait. I’d say the 3D in the Hobbit trumps Avatar, it was simply awesome and enhanced so many scenes even though it was a 2nd watching for me.
I’ve not heard anything about The Hobbit release date in China though? Kind of odd, considering LOTR was pretty big here (at least in my memory)…

Even the recent one was good, although not as good as the Matt Damon trilogy. But you must see James Bond, it is the original spy movie. The Sean Connery ones are what made history but the recent ones are really good also (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace). Austin Powers is just a parody of James Bond, it is to James Bond what Hot Shots is to Top Gun.
Here’s a good place to start with the James Bond series.
Quote:I don’t know, had some bad experiences: (phone rings) : “wei!! I’m in the cinema! I dont understand this movie! What are you doing later? Oh really….”I’ve had the same thing happen. I will make a scene if someone does that near me if I have to. Can’t stand it.
January 4, 2013 at 4:52 am #25227RayParticipantI’m more excited about seeing Django. The reviews are mostly sensational, and there’s a chance it could get release here. Two reasons: 1. It stars Leo D. Pretty much the biggest Hollywood star here (with, inexplicably, given his awful recent movies, Nicholas Kai-Chi-Cage a close 2nd).
2.The plot is not at all sensitive to China, and in fact highlights one of the most shameful periods of American history. Anything that makes the US of A look bad is always popular with Chinese censors….However, whenever i’ve mentioned Quentin T. to friends or students, his name doesnt ring a bell….and oh yeah. it’s apparently ultra-violent, but i’m not sure if thats a problem here… 50/50 chance maybe…

I think your logic and understanding of how/why foreign films here are released is, well, wrong. That’s all. 😀 It goes a lot deeper than whomever the locals think is a bigger star, or even which films may be a larger success — and which films may be “negative” China or “anti” America in some way. There’s a lot of good articles explaining a lot about the motion picture industry and limitations on releasing foreign films, and things like revenue split rules/regs, on sites like China Law Blog.
January 4, 2013 at 5:56 am #25232VincentParticipantFor me James Bond ended with Pierce Brosnan
January 4, 2013 at 5:56 am #25233GAVVIEParticipantWould love to see “Skyfall”. Have been a Bond fan since I read the first book (in hard cover, no less). Sean Connery was number 1, but I also prefer D.Craig to his recent predecessors. Just hope the film has Chinese sub-titles and not visa-versa. Btw..”Bourne”. Also easy to get to the cinema in Raffles City, near the Metro. @ JerryS..not having seen any Bond films, start reading the books. Much better with a little imagination.
January 4, 2013 at 6:40 am #25235JerrySParticipantIf it’s a group thing, ill join. Isn’t this the same actor who was in ‘Girl with Dragon Tattoos?’ He’s a stud, so im in.

January 4, 2013 at 9:01 am #25248RayParticipantNicholas Kai-chi Cage jumped the shark along time ago. Saddens me to say this….
January 4, 2013 at 9:24 am #25253AMParticipantBond fans might be into this
January 4, 2013 at 9:27 am #25254AndyParticipantSaw Skyfall at the IMAX in London, was awesome. The plot has its flaws but every Bond film does, loved it. Lets hope they dont cut it too much there are a few Chinese scenes.
January 4, 2013 at 10:06 am #25259CharlieKeymasterQuote:I think your logic and understanding of how/why foreign films here are released is, well, wrong.Ray didn’t say that what he mentioned are the only factors that influence release in China. Revenue potential and the plots relation to China certainly do play a role, as he mentioned. Of course there are other factors, but pointing out that his understanding of how films are released in China is wrong because his forum comment wasn’t a comprehensive guide to film releases in China is dumb.
The China Law Blog series that you mentioned is very good though, here’s a link: China Film Industry on China Law Blog
Quote:Nicholas Kai-chi Cage jumped the shark along time ago. Saddens me to say this….Was it Ghost Rider or National Treasure? At least he always has Face-Off and The Rock to fall back on.
January 4, 2013 at 10:24 am #25263WilliamzsMemberSaw it. It has great stunts and thrills but plot is paper thin.
January 4, 2013 at 1:25 pm #25266RayParticipantNicholas Kai-chi Cage jumped the shark before even jumping the shark was a thing. Jumped it before Fonzie even….GhostRider just cemented it…don’t get me started on de Niro/Pacino. Could be a whole new shark-jumping thread right there……
