Guys – your help is absolutely awesome! Basically I’ve always lived in the UK, but when I met her last year I spent 4 months in Chengdu getting to know her (with some extensions and visa runs inbetween). We intended on breaking up when I left, but made a go of things long distance and it worked out. She’s spent 2 months checking out the UK.

From what people have put above, I need to decide if I’m better to do the legal ceremony in China, or do the legal ceremony in the UK (the big family celebration ceremony will be in China).

I do have a day job, so will need to read through all the posts, but really many thanks for your answers and help and I’ll come back with questions once I’ve digested it all. Thanks loads 🙂 I’ll owe any of you beers next time I’m around.

Lisa – I live on the Kingsland Road and I’ve been here for 3 weeks (if you’re on Thursday’s flight to Amsterdam that would really be a coincidence too far!).

Couchsurfing is also a good way to meet people (locals and travellers) – that’s what I did almost 3 weeks ago – although I do visit quite frequently, but for different reasons.

I’m meeting an expat tomorrow evening if you want to come along. On Wednesday I’m having a leaving party with some friends here (you’d be welcome to come and meet a mixed bunch of Chinese and expats), or if you have free time during the day and want to swap notes on Chengdu I am free most of the day tomorrow.

PM me for contact details if you do want to come to any of the above.

War wont happen. A few skirmishes at worst, but for war to happen, one side must be convinced it can win; or one side must fear not entering war; and sides entering a war must feel they can survive it (otherwise surrender comes).

China, the US, and Japan have a lot of bilateral trade to be lost, they wont war on this basis alone. The rocky islets are about resources (geography is a resource, regardless whether specific resources have been proved to be within). What allows the issue to be disputed is that most of these islets were never properly governed in the past, and depending what approach you use, most sides can make claims. This means everybody creates an argument that stands on its own merits, but no-one can tally up with the others.

War though? Its not likely, but journalists rarely get paid to write an article that says “probably nothing will happen, so read something else”… haha
