The recently released MI TV 2S looks good, but the only model available is 48″.

I would be interested in seeing how Kodi runs on one of these things.

The forum is appropriate lots of geeks here.

I didn’t say it wasn’t appropriate. I just suggested somewhere MORE appropriate, http://forum.xda-developers.com/.

Anyway I figured it out in the end.

    Good for you

I’m sure there are more appropriate forums for this kind of question, for example XDA. Anyway, AFAIK you need to flash gapps in recovery on the latest versions of Android. This means first flashing a custom recovery like TWRP.

For example, in Japan, you have to use crisp bills, fresh from the bank. Anything like that?

Same here, however in practice it can be difficult to find crisp new bills even from the bank. As Chris already pointed out, just make sure the bills don’t have tears, writing on, etc.

What about clothes for weddings? Should I wear a suit and tie?

Maybe Guangzhou is different, but in Chengdu if you aren’t part of the ceremony then people dress casually. I usually go smart casual. I feel bad if I show up to someones wedding in jeans and a t-shirt, but feel out of place if suited and booted.

Richard do you have wechat? If so join the group Brits in Chengdu. The warden for the Chongqing consulate is a member….

Graham is also active on forums.  I doubt there is much he can do though. They are quite strict on following official procedure for visa applications.

I picked mine up at the start of April from jd.com also – delivered next day, but maybe availability has been inconsistent… so far no problems at all.

I checked yesterday before posting and they were out of stock. They have more stock today along with a price hike of 30RMB.

if you’ve an Android version maybe you can just one click buy or something?

The android version has a tab dedicated to the xiaomi store. It is very similar in presentation to the jd.com app.

Also, my app is in English, just the FAQ type content is still in Chinese…config settings etc English, though..

The android app is Chinese only. For non-Chinese readers this doesn’t present a problem in day to day use as all the basic controls have icons depicting their function. However, some help may be needed in the beginning to configure it. I had to ask my wife what a couple of the settings were.

I’ve been using one for a few months too – really happy with it. Considering getting a 2nd one for another area of the house..

It looks like both the machine and replacement filters are now available directly though xiaomi’s website dispatched within a week. No need to enter a stupid lottery system. Assuming I don’t encounter any problems in the next month or so of use, I will be investing in one for our lounge. I like the ability to check our home air quality while at work.

Dedicated VPN router recommendations? I tried setting one up with DD-WRT on an old chinese router but I’ve given up on that.

I don’t have much experience with this. I have been using a raspberry pi as a VPN gateway for years now. I did experiment with dd-wrt as an alternative back then but found it to be unreliable, not as flexible or quick, so gave up. If I were to try again then I would use an Asus running TomatoUSB – probably an old RT-N16, N66U or AC66u. I have experience with those routers and know they are stable and easy to flash. If you want something newer and available from jd.com at a reasonable price then the netgear r6300v2 is an awesome router – Charlie mentioned it earlier in this thread. It has a few different custom firmwares available for it now.

Picked one of these up from jd.com last week for 899RMB while they had stock. Some observations so far:

    – App is only in Chinese, but it is simple to use.

    – Filters are 150RMB each and are really easy to change. A lever lowers the filter so that it simply slides out.

    – Filter looks like a pre-filter mesh and HEPA. No carbon filter.

    – Noise on the lowest 2 settings & night mode are similar to an aircon unit. The highest setting is like a vacuum cleaner!

    – It pulls in air from the sides and projects it upwards. Air temperature doesn’t appear to change.

    – You can use the app from anywhere. It connects through a xiaomi cloud account. This means you can control and monitor everything remotely.

    – You can turn on the PM2.5 sensor even when the filter is off. I have a baby at home, so this is a great feature for me. I can check the air quality in the bedroom while at work.

    – You can set the filter to automatically turn on when the air quality is bad. Turn off when it is good.

    – Lights and beeping noises can be turned off.

    – Power light also doubles as an air quality indicator.

    – Filters last for 145 days. The app tells you when to replace them.

    – PM2.5 reading uses the Chinese standard of measurement. This isn’t as critical as the American standard.

    – App has an inside reading from the sensor, and an outside reading from your closest monitoring station.

    – Already had 2 firmware updates. One fixed a bug which caused the filter to forget some settings when turned off and on.

Will post an update with my personal impressions next week. I have borrowed a PM2.5 sensor from a friend for comparison.

Ben I wonder if you could give me some advice? I have had a really slow connection to my VPN just using my macbook for the last few days.  My iPad and phone have been working perfectly.  Any suggestions?  It uses an automatic DHCP address.

If you are using the same wifi connection and vpn on all devices, but your macbook is slower then I can only assume it is some issue with your macbook. It could be some service like bittorrent opening too many connections. It’s a bit difficult to debug things like this without access to the device. A wifi router with a persistent VPN connection would solve these kind of issues.

In my setup, I also have another wifi router to use just for a plain China internet connection to use China sites like Taobao.

This is important. You don’t want ALL your traffic to go through the VPN gateway, even if you do add static routes for Chinese addresses. I use different DHCP profiles on my main router to choose which devices go through the VPN and which go directly through my China Telecom connection. The same effect can be achieved by manually configuring the network settings on devices. I have never found it beneficial to run torrent traffic through a VPN. It is slower and you run the risk of DMCA scare letters.

The router itself (the more expensive one) is amazing though, phenomenal range and speed. It was recommended to me here on the forum by Ben.

I use this router as a wifi bridge to my home media server. It is super reliable and I can get over 35MB/s with it. I did try flashing dd-wrt – wasn’t impressed. It was definitely slower and unstable, but that was almost 2 years ago.

Right, that’s more or less what I was thinking, I guess you would have to add some Chinese website ( taobao,jd ect… ) to the vpn ignore list.

Not quite that easy, but you can create a script which adds static routes for all Chinese IP addresses ~5400 routes. This means any traffic destined for jd, youku, wechat etc. doesn’t go through the VPN.

Taobao is bit tricky as they will direct your traffic based on DNS resolution. This means you will get their foreign site. There are a couple of ways round this though.

Did the upgrade..not getting that high downstream on speedtest but upstream seems great!

Although peering between different providers in China has improved in the last couple of years, it can still be pretty horrible. I believe the default server assigned by speedtest is currently on China Mobiles network. The best server to test on is in Kunming – “China Telecom”.

Holy crap, you got a 4G sim card with 17gb of bandwidth?

yeah, I think 15GB of that is a new introductory offer that lasts for 1 year after which you have 2GB / month.

The IPTV thing is pretty useless though, I had it hooked up for a while but none of the content on there really seems worth watching for me

Ours sits unplugged. Neither my wife or I are fans of Chinese TV, and the on demand content isn’t even close to as good as what I have stored locally.

Does it require you to go there in person with passport or is it something that can be changed over the phone?

You have to go to your local CT office in person.

Also, the previous 159/mo package includes iptv, does this one?

Yes, apparently it is 4k IPTV. I seriously doubt they have any 4k content though.

China Telecom have a new service – 100Mb/s down, 10Mb/s up for 169RMB / month. They also give you a 4G sim card with 17GB of data each month – 15GB Chengdu + 2GB national.

There are tons of them available on Taobao like this, just search for those characters on there.

That is only rated for 60w. This one is able to supply up to 400w. However, you might want to play it safe and buy this one which is listed as up to 800w.

220v转110v变压器 is a better search term as some transformers are for different voltages.

I’m not a lawyer but any children of a British citizen are British, I’m quite certain it is as simple as that, no matter where you are born.

His daughter is Chinese. He wants a British right of abode stamp in her Chinese passport so that she may travel to the UK whenever she wishes. He does not want to get her a British passport as that would be illegal.

I have 2 friends that got a RoA for their kids. It is simple but costly ~£300. The application procedure is detailed clearly on the gov.uk website. The pitfall is that it expires with the child’s passport. So isn’t cost effective unless you just got a new passport and plan to return to the UK on a regular basis. For this reason, I don’t plan on getting one for my son. If you have any questions then drop me a message and I will put you in touch with one of my friends.
