I was talking about a global trend for restricting the internet which often but not in all countries also includes outright blocking websites and domains. A “good” example of a non-authoritarian western state is Australia. There was even a proposal to introduce Chinese style censorship on the ISP level, but I’m not sure if that ever became law.

Enemies of the Internet according to reporters without borders (Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship#Around_the_world):

    This is very concerning.

I totally agree. The worst thing is: This isn’t only happening in China, but it’s a global trend. I’m really worried about the future of the internet. Lots of people just don’t understand what we will lose if the free internet disappears.

Not sure about this one though, just checked addons.mozilla and it still works without vpn.

@Kim: Thanks for the tip! Did you just get someone from China Telecom to have a look at your setup? Was already suspecting it might have something to do with how i configured the router.

Foreign hosted websites always open much slower than local ones though, so im thinking whatever speed we buy, there’s no way around getting slowed down by the Great Firewall

I dont use a VPN at the moment but Fre*gate has been slow for the last couple of days too. Could be like Charlie said. In general the whole internet situation isn’t getting any better and all now that I got fibre… arggggh!

Am I the only one who noticed that sign that says “foreigners not allowed” on the road up Longquan Hill?

And Ian hiked right past the military bases 😀

Can I ask why you want to buy a car in the first place?

I guess you are probably American and I’ve heard it’s hard to get around in the US if you dont have a car. However it’s a totally different story here. Its actually much more hassle to get around WITH a car in Chengdu.

The most carefree way to get around is by far taxis, which like Charlie already mentioned are ridiculously cheap here in Chengdu. For 1-3$US you can get to most places in the city and you got your own private chouffeur, what else do you want? Coolest way and sometimes faster too are bikes, but I understand thats not for everyone or all weather.

Now lets look at buying a car: You’ve already seen the prices. Since you dont speak Chinese (I assume) buying one will be the first hurdle: Signing the contract,  all the formalities… you always have to get someone to go with you every time you interact with the dealer, garage, police. Driving itself is not as crazy as many people might think (I like driving in China, but then again that depends on yourself), the traffic jams though, especially during rush hour are no joke; Seriously: If you road rage easily like me, it’s not for you! Then there’s parking of course, though to be fair for a mega city like Chengdu it could be worse (and certainly will be soon).

Renting a car on the other hand is, for now, pretty cheap and straight forward (zuche.com or avis.cn – check them out, both good). So why not come over here first, get a Chinese license after some time, and if you ever feel like you have to drive or your legs are gonna fall off, rent a car and do some trips around Sichuan, which I can garantee you’ll enjoy a lot more than driving in this hell-hole of a city –/car rant over. sorry but it had to be said

Last thing I read it’s one of the towers of that new mall on Chuaxi Lu now, forgot the name, the one with the giant Panda climbing on top. But not sure if you can get to the top as a tourist there.

I’m also interested in recommendations on VPS in Hong Kong. And if someone has a links to a guide that can be easily followed on how to set up one that would be great (I dont really know any commands in linux).

For 8000-1000 you can get a decent e-scooter second hand. Or get a cheap 600-700 one and buy a new battery for it! Personally I’d go with a bicycle too, though.

Locks are mostly useless against professional thiefs, wouldn’t spend too much money on a lock – but don’t buy the cheapest 10kuai lock at walmart either!

Those gangs usually snatch bikes from the street, your bike is gonna be fairly safe in those “guarded” bike parks if its just a regular bike or scooter and nothing too fancy/expensive. Bikes do get stolen from those too occasionally, like Alan said, if you tempt them with something ridiculously expensive. My neighbor had his 60000RMB mountain bike stolen from outside his apartment recently. And we live in a very safe compound imo.

    Basically you have two options:

Buy something second-hand, cheap and ugly enough that thieves wouldnt care about it.

Or: NEVER leave you bike/scooter unattended even for a minute.

Oh – and if you go for a second-hand one please don’t go down to the backstreet bike market at jiuyanqiao. So many expats go there and buy a stolen bike that they themselves have then stolen not much later – that’s just retarded. Don’t support the thiefs!

Your friend seems a bit paranoid to me.I’m not really surprised though, because – and I don’t want to alarm you here – judging from what you are telling us about him I’m suspecting he might be addicted to marijuana!

Think about it! If they were screening for that so many people would get refused here in Chengdu.

I don’t know about the process of getting a new license, but just converting your foreign one is pretty straight forward, you can easily do it on your own. Think there’s been a thread on here explaining how to do it some time ago. The only tricky part is passing the computer test, which is in best Chinglish  – unless you can take it in Chinese of course. But then again, you can retake the test as many times as you like, just have to pay another 100kuai each time.
