That sounds too nice for me. I have a pretty nice backpack that I recently purchased in the US so I am looking for something that I can stuff clothes and books into. Something that looks better than a cardboard box. Basically what most of the local students have or what the countryside people have at the train station. Hopefully under 100 RMB. Even a duffle bag would work.

In that area I know of 3 places. You can go to Physical in the IFS building which is going to be the nicest/most expensive option. To give you an idea my wife paid 3300 for 12 month membership. You can go to Pioneer Fitness which is where I go. It is a 10 minute walk from Chunxi Lu 财富中心. That is a nice gym but nothing fancy. Clean locker room, sauna, clean showers, new equipment. Has what you have requested. Price is much cheaper. I paid 2600 for 2 years in October but they recently remodeled and added 7-8 new machines. I don’t know if they raised the price or not. Last I believe there is a legend fitness somewhere in that area. That will be your cheapest option. No idea on the exact location but it should be on their website.

Does anyone know how to say “rooting” in Chinese? I tried to explain this to my wife, who is Chinese, and she had no idea what I was talking about. Thanks

Use 2 locks.  I’ve been here for almost 7 years and I have never had a bike stolen.  Make it a hassle to steal your bike and the thief will most likely go after an easier target.  I agree with Chris’s advice above as well.

If your on a budget I recommend taking a look at this online course from this Swedish guy.  The first level is free and level’s 1 and 2 go on sale for $10-15 once a month.  He has his own site but I don’t know if it is functional or not.  Check out:

    https://www.udemy.com/chinese-made-easy/

    http://www.dominochinese.com

If your at an intermediate level this also maybe too easy for you.  I found his Level 0, 1 and 2 to be very helpful.  First course is free.

I wanted to post a follow up to this discussion.  Recently I heard a rumor that iHerb.com was now offering free shipping to China.  I just purchased a bunch of stuff today and I can confirm on this.  Basically if you spend $40.00+ on their site, you get free shipping up to 10 pounds.  Or if your like me and have 20 pounds of stuff in your cart, 2 orders at $40.00 each gives you 20 pounds of stuff shipped free to China.    A classmate of mine just used this last week and reported that it took 1 week to get his items.  You may have to pay custom’s fees depending on how much stuff you buy.  For all of my fellow health nuts, this should be a helpful post.  Also for our Chinese friends, you can use Alipay, wechat, tenpay, paypal and several credit cards to process your order.  The site has Chinese as an option as well.

If your a first time shopper,  you get $5.00 off your first order by using my reference code CAD962.  This is similar to uber’s promo where both of us get a $5.00 credit 🙂

Right now the 1 year membership is offered at 3800.  So 750 is a deal (3000 RMB per year at that rate)

You need your citizen id/passport to activate this.  I can meet you at the gym.

If your interested in organic food, you can order from one of several companies that will deliver directly to your home.  I have been using the same company since 2012 and I’ve been pretty happy with the service.  You can buy the fruits/vegetables on the bottom level of the Far Eastern building at Tianfu Square.  You can also pay to have it delivered to your home, which is the service that I subscribe to.  You can also take a trip to their farm to see the whole operation, if your into that sort’ve thing.  They have other expats that volunteer there if your into woofing (work on organic farm) or just want to see it for yourself.  One of the managers there speaks a little English, but not much.  You can call them at 4006233265 or visit their website    http://csa.igarden.cn/.

For those of you who mentioned nuts, I buy unsalted nuts from Costco.  They have a distributor in Taiwan and they ship to the Mainland.

My family has sent me various items over the years through USPS and Fedex.  Unless it is priority, it always takes 2-3 weeks.  Make sure you put your phone number, or a friend’s number who speaks Chinese, on the front of the package.  I’ve learned that the hard way…

Did they tell you if they think it will be finished this year?  I liked Physical but it is a bit far from me.  Raffle center is down the street from me.  Thanks

I just looked at Burning Gym.  It is nowhere as nice as Physical although it is a lot cheaper.  It is an awkward setup though.  The pool is in a separate building so if you want to go swimming after your workout you need to go to the locker room and change, then leave the building  and enter the building next door.   Pool is not that big but big enough to do laps.  You can pay for just the pool if that’s what your looking for.

This gym is called 伯尼 (rough translation is Burning gym or something like that).  I haven’t been there yet but my wife was looking at it last week and she claims it was in the IFS building.  She sent me 20 photos of the place and it looks pretty nice.

That’s per person, still negotiating for a couples rate.  Most of the gyms in Chengdu offer 20-30% off if you join with another person.  If anyone is interested, i’ll let you know how much they want for couples.

The Jinjiang hotel is the best deal for a hotel pool.  It is 48 RMB per person and there are usually only a few people there.  Not an olympic sized pool though.  The Shangri La hotel has the nicest pool in the city although to join as a member of their health club, it is quite expensive.  There is a new gym in the IFS building that has a large square pool.  My wife was just there and we are still negotiating with the gym.  Right now the offer that they gave us is 4400 RMB for 20 months for the gym and the pool.  They also have a hot tub, steam room and sauna.
