Man, that was a boring super bowl. I enjoyed the halftime show, somewhat. Good dancing. What’s with these idiot coaches who are two touchdowns under with 4 minutes left in the game and they decide to … punt!?!?! Can anyone explain how this will win a game? Never in a million years. Carolina blows.

On the other hand, I enjoyed the superb owls. That’s a handful of hooters.

Sorry, the defecation thing is a bit of an exaggeration. I’ve seen pissing on the subway twice. Otherwise the subways are pretty clean. Noisy as hell though.

Also, getting out of town is very easy here. Especially on weekdays. There are numerous bus/train stations that will get you places very cool in an hour minimum.

In fact, weekends are the best time to work in China. It’s not worth trying to go anywhere to see anything on weekends because the hordes show up 6am Saturday morning and don’t leave until Sunday at midnight. Weekends are also the time when defecation occurs most on the subways and the noise level clocks in consistently over 110dB. The weekdays however are relatively calm.

As for bars and such, weekends are a good party, but during weeknights you won’t have any problem running into some errant EFL teachers or random Chinese folk out having some drinks at a bar. If you’ve got a job, you’ll meet plenty of others who’ll be looking to drink on a weeknight. Lots of people here seem to have abnormal schedules. Besides, the local restaurants are hopping any night of the week.

E-bikes aren’t illegal. They just have to be registered (license plates).

I’d like to join, but only if you can promise running in and out of the caves themselves. I really need the full effect. I can’t concentrate on my running unless there are ancient carvings going past me to certify my ego as a runner. If this cannot be guaranteed, then I will not be participating.

    Greetings Kemosabee

If you’d like to forward me 500,000 RMB, I can surely secure you a villa in the luxurious, most affluent, most bucolic locale in Chengdu’s remote vicinity. You can drive your idiot’s car around in circles for decades and not even feel older. Trust me, dear, I’m working for you.

As you can see from the initial responses to your question, lodderup, Chengdu is an incredibly boring place. The best fun in Chengdu is actually getting your ass out of it.

But sorry, I’m with Dan. People’s Park is all at once a novelty, a mindfuck, and an earsore. Quite entertaining the first two times. Bring beer.

    Also try…
    North Train Station and environs
    Sewage Canal walks (bring beer)
low-end “special service” massage parlours (pairs nicely with canal walk)

    My name is Yon Yonson,
    I come from Wisconsin
I work in a lumber mill there
    All the people I meet
As I walk down the street
Ask me how I got there
    So I tell them:
    My name is Yon Yonson
    I come from Wisconsin
I work in a lumber mill there
    All the people I meet
As I walk down the street
Ask me how I got there

??? and the Wal-mart worker? Do you not understand what goes on in the world today? Have you traveled? Have you talked to anyone? Rape, murder, blackmail, exploitation? All alive and well. Technology has nothing to do with it, except maybe made it all easier. Humans will always be humans. Iphones and phoney pharmaceuticals have only been to assuage the ego of those creating and benefiting. I repeat, not impressed.

Let me guess, you’re going to tell me about how Native Americans warred constantly and ancient China ripped itself apart. And that doesn’t happen anymore, right? I have an idea, let’s build a spaceship and go to another land to fuck it up as much as we’ve fucked up our own.

There have been plenty of peaceful times throughout history. We look at history through a lens of “we’re badass, they weren’t”. Look at the native americans before Europe arrived, or several dynasties in China for that matter. Look at the Renaissance. Compare that with Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria or druglord Mexico today. Which would you prefer?

    Charlie,

    a) You find the destruction of the world awe-inspiring?
    Watch Hollywood blockbusters much?

    b) Looking into the night sky is the absolute antithesis of technology. Why do you think it is so exhilarating? Not in Chengdu, of course.

    c) The serious problems with humanity as I mentioned are greed, hate, indulgence… etc. Tech will never solve those problems, no matter how much you ‘like’ something on facebook.

Animals kill because they are hungry, not because they want a leather jacket or a pair of Air Jordans.

I don’t really like hypotheticals, but I’ll posit one here.

So you get a time machine and go back to any unenlightened era (or enlightened, doesn’t matter). And you’re able to communicate with those people and you ask them if they are living in misery without internet, space travel, penicillin, jet skis… etc. What would they say?

They probably would have no idea what you’re talking about. But if you explained those things, they’d probably just say ‘whatever’. You get the same response if you go to a tiny village in X country and try to tell them about the wonders of our fantastic urban paradises.

People today tell me about going to mars or curing cancer, and I ask why? I’ll never willingly leave planet earth and cancer is just another form of death, like car accidents, falling pianos and suicide.

I’ve been quite the naysayer recently. I’m well aware of that. Perhaps it’s burnout in China. This country demonstrates tremendous progression like no other, but when does a measure of restraint kick in? When will it ever be enough? When will balance be appreciated, not game-face aggression toward the entire universe?

I can’t swing back to make this post relevant with ESP and collective (un)conscious, but there is a reality out there, not purveyed via digital interfaces.

Rick, you’ve got a very strong argument for maintaining the course. Thanks for the discussion ;p

and then someone with ill intentions taps into that neural internet and turns you all into slaves in the blink of an eye.
Does this really need to be spelled out?

There is such a subconscious internet you speak of. ESP and the collective conscious are not just fairy tales made up for kicks. Humanity has abandoned those ancient understandings for something far easier and more metallic. Something that goes well with a cooper mini.

Life itself is obviously not enough.

😀 Before the printing press, things were simply written. The silk road existed somehow despite no consistent language or google translate. I’m not against technology itself, but I’ll draw the line somewhere before the industrial revolution… Or in the 80s will work too, haha.

Thanks Rick. Yes, even the cavemen had their forms of technology. Some mighty fine examples of bow and arrow, flint stones, teepees, etc. Those were invented to maintain a limited scope of survival. Technology today seems to only ensure human dominance. It’s jumped the shark, so to speak. What is the purpose of going to another planet, because we’ve completely made our own unliveable? I think a lot of modern technology solves problems which were also solved 1,000 years ago in simply a different manner. But anyways, I’m not trying to advocate returning to those times, I just don’t see much difference in humanity from those days to this.

Nice topic. I don’t think technology will ever make a dent in the serious problems of humanity. Greed, hate, indulgence, complete disregard for anything on earth that is not “human” and all the rest of our behaviors will never go away. Technology is just there to validate the human psyche. Look what we can do!

It’s funny to talk about how old movies were not able to predict future tech. I think it’s because technology is pretty much arbitrary and meaningless. Maybe it makes life more comfortable, buy hey, is a lizard on a rock in the hot sun not comfortable?

I’m as dependent on tech as anyone else. Into this house we’re born. But it has never surprised me. I think the hoverboard from Back to the Future was the last time I ever got seriously excited about technology. ;D
