Tibetan floor cushions and most of the kitchen stuff now sold. Pot, wok, kettle and jars still available
kirs10ParticipantGreat, good luck. Feel free to contact me if you want to exchange a small amount of GBP for RMB, I can give you cash locally (I can exchange a few thousand GBP at a time).
Just to hijack this slightly, I’m looking to buy GBP – so you exchange RMB to GBP Charlie, or just the other way round?kirs10ParticipantYeh, the weather might seem pretty similar to good old Scotland. Although not as horrifically cold in the winter. But come prepared to deal with the complete lack of central heating!
I would get your hopes up about the food, I think it’s great! Admittedly it does have its digestive repercussions but I absolutely bloody love most of it. And there’s plenty of decent Western places when you need a break from the oil and spice.
I wouldn’t worry about cycling etiquette – basically out here there is none. You can cycle the wrong way, on the pavement, like a complete idiot and no one will say anything. Just keep your wits about you, invest in a bell and you’ll be grand!
kirs10ParticipantYeh the bamboo bikes are great, they’re made by Natooke, if you give them a Google you’ll find their site. I’d highly recommend splashing out on one of their bikes, bamboo or otherwise, best thing I’ve ever bought!
Ha yeh it’s a whole lot cheaper than Aberdeen out here, for beer and all the Sichuan food you can eat! There’s some really nice bars out here so plenty to choose from!
If you have Wechat (definitely get it before you come) feel free to add me and I can show you a couple of places when you get here. My ID is kirstenmunro. I’ve been here 8 months so far and love it so you’ll have a great time!
kirs10Participantof course, add away!
kirs10ParticipantHi
I set up a pet sitting network, it’s essentially a Wechat group where people who have pets/like animals can arrange pet sitters.
If you add me on Wechat I can add you to the group. My ID is kirstenmunro
kirs10ParticipantHello
I’m from Aberdeen! Glad we’re getting another North East Scotlander to add to the Chengdu contingent 🙂
It’s super easy to meet people here so definitely don’t worry about that – the expat community is pretty big and there are a few bars that we all flock to. Feel free to send me a message on here and I can answer any questions you might have. And swap Granite City stories of course, pretty much guaranteed to know people in common.
My number one tip would be to get a bike – best way to get around and there’s a really good cycling community here so it’s a great way to meet some friendly faces!
kirs10ParticipantHijacking this thread slightly as I’m interested in Crossfit. Do you know if any English is spoken at all there? I’d be interested in going to a trial session but my Chinese definitely isn’t up to figuring out instructions whilst attempting not to collapse with exhaustion!! If anyone has been, it would be great to hear reviews/general thoughts on what it’s like.
I haven’t been but a friend of mine has. He says that there are some people there who speak decent English and the workouts are all written in English. I think you should be okay. The name of the place is Tianfu Crossfit, I believe.
Thanks! Should I pluck up the courage to go (I’ve heard it’s a pretty intense workout) I’ll post a review!

kirs10ParticipantThis may be a long shot but I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to deal with a very problematic neighbour. To summarise, pretty much everyday my boyfriend and I have to overhear our downstairs neighbour scream for hours on end, sometimes until the middle of the night, at his hysterical child, coupled with thumps and screams that suggest it’s not just yelling that’s going on. As is the way here, everyone in our community seems to turn a blind eye with the frustrating belief that family matters are not their business to meddle in. We’ve lived here 4 months and it’s a constant occurrence so I can only imagine how long this has been going on. The guards must be well aware of what’s going on as you can hear it throughout the community but nothing is done. We’ve taken the passive agressive and very non-Chinese route of stamping on the ceiling and shouting ‘Bie han le’ at regular intervals which has earnt us a few yells of our own (yet he’s weirdly polite in the stairwell) but otherwise has little effect. My mandarin is non-existent otherwise I would try and talk to him about how distressing it is and failing that, call the police to report him. Without being able to speak the language though this is pretty impossible. I’m not sure if anything really can be done or if we just need to make like the rest of our building and try and block it out. But I was wondering if there was some other service that we could report it to. From what I’ve read online, even if I could cobble together enough mandarin to call the police it’s unlikely that much would be done. Any advice much appreciated. Failing that our lease is up in 6 months so we can just suck it up until then and move!
Thanks Charlie! We’ve contacted our landlord whose agreed to have a word so fingers crossed he pipes down a bit! Failing that I have a stockpile of earplugs 🙂
kirs10ParticipantI spotted Pepto Bismol in the Sabrinas in Tongzilin the other week. Tabley form that look like they may be from the 80s and not sure how expensive they are but definitely them!
kirs10ParticipantIona – that’s great! I’d be more than happy to cat sit for you at some point too!
I guess the easiest thing to do would be to set up a Wechat group for anyone who is interested. If you add me (ID: kirstenmunro) then we can just put out a message when we need someone and see if anyone is available 🙂
I’ll try and spread the word a bit further too! I know a couple of my friends would be interested in this as well.
kirs10ParticipantThanks for setting up this thread, really helpful.
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in setting up a bit of a pet-sitting network. I have 2 cats who are much happier spending any holiday time at home to lounge on our sofas and run around freely with a visit a couple of times a day from someone to feed them, play a bit and just generally keep them happy and healthy. I’d be more than happy to offer my services to anyone in the Tongzilin area who needs a pet sitter. And would be totally happy to do it for free too, particularly if anyone could offer the same to me when we go away for a few nights. Just thought it would be worth floating the idea in case anyone would be keen 😃
