My first DVD buying experience in Chengdu two days ago was pretty much as described by Charlie. I went to this computer city building to one of the higher floors and asked for DVDs and then a lady called her husband who took me first downstairs to the next building and then to the 8th or 9th floor where I could choose from plenty of movies in a dark and isolate room, to be honest it was a bit creepy at the beginning.

I paid 10 kuai each for the ones with better quality (he showed me that their release dates were later than the same movies with worse quality which would be a bit cheaper).

Thanks for the tip with weibody, gonna try it soon!

Hey Vincent, I just got 3G working on my iPhone as well as on my iPad with China Unicom last week. I was lucky enough to go there with a local, otherwise no one would have understood me. Unfortunately I can not give you any specific details because even the local could not really explain the exact contract/prepaid plan thing to me but meant it would suit my needs. And after 1.5 hours spending in the shop and listening to them yelling at each other I was just too annoyed and said whatever it costs, I take it..

As far as I understood, once the internet connection is not working anymore, I have to go to a China Unicom store to recharge my account. And although my contract (or whatever it is) lasts for a year, if I quit it earlier it shouldn’t be a problem. Oh and I have to pay the SIM card (of course) and something else (I think a month or two) in advance. Such a hassle I tell you..

Hey, I’ll be staying in Chengdu for at least four months and will be officially enrolled as a student at South Western University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) but my main idea of going to Chengdu is to study Mandarin. So far my plan is to take private lessons three hours per day from Monday to Friday (a friend of mine did a similar thing in Beijing and I was pretty impressed/convinced by the outcome). I am not a total beginner but have studied Mandarin for two and a half years now, though only about 1.5 hours per week during my studies. I guess the most professional teaching is taking place at a language school like Mandarin Club or Chinese Corner and not through private tutoring (which I could take additionally), am I right with this assumption? This decision will also have a big impact on my search for accommodation since I want to live close to the place where I’m supposed to be taught daily, and the language schools are in the center of the city whereas the SWUFE campus is far in the west of the city. Any thoughts and opinions on that? Thanks a lot for your help!! Cheers Dom

Very interesting thread since I’ll be also moving to Chengdu soon. It’s not my first time that I’m living abroad for a longer time but it is my first time I am not staying at a place (abroad) where it is not constantly hot/warm. So how about the winter in Chengdu (I’m Austrian so I’ve been able to experience some strong winters at home)? Is it necessary to bring a lot of warm clothes (I’m gonna stay for at least four months starting from September), is one thick jacket sufficient, how about warm (equals heavy) shoes for winter? I guess it shouldn’t be a problem to buy most of it in Chengdu since I’m normal European size (180 cm, 5.9 ft), right? Thanks, Dom

Hey there, I’m new to this forum and will be arriving in Chengdu soon to study Chinese for one semester. Since I had been living in Hong Kong last year for about eight months and heard that recently a “Lan Kwai Fong” opened in Chengdu, I am wondering if this is a good place to hang out. Any experiences with that? Cheers Dom
