Oh boy. I wonder what was going through the ladies mind. Considering this being China, it can’t be that hard to get laid. 😉

I do love the double standard though. Had this been a guy raping a girl we would be grabbing our pitchforks, instead we see it as a joke.

Depends a bit where you’re from in my opinion.

I remember reading somewhere that the winters in Chengdu are bone-chilling, (might have been on this forum) but since I’m from the Nordic region, I’m used to -20C so what I’d call bone chilling is probably -30C. Hehe.

I’ve walked outside with only a T-shirt already just fine, but I’d still recommend having a normal coat. Doesn’t have to be a winter one in my opinion. (I don’t have one, I just use a typical thin coat if it’s very windy.)

But yeah, if your not used to the cold, prepare accordingly. I see most Chinese with pretty thick jackets still.

Planning to move there. Being told 60% of a year it’s polluted & 40% blue sky.

Looking up the net, found nothing about air quality graph over different months in a year. Any better in hot season, or major variations in summer & winter? How much is the average AQI during summer time?

To what extent the air purifiers can filter the dust? What about gases?

I just arrived here so I can’t speak for the whole year, but from the information I’ve gathered, the pollution is always the worst at winter.

One of the contributing factors is the Chinese new year, because Chinese companies usually go on overdrive before the vacations start in order to wrap everything up. (This is particularly true for construction where they have strict deadlines, and obviously the start of the biggest holiday in China is one of the more important ones.)

Air purifiers depend a lot, some of them are essentially useless according to some people, but some of them do have great noticeable effects. I suggest you read around and use Google to read up on some recommended air purifiers. I’m not sure how well purifiers work against gasses but is that even much of a problem?

    Anyways, my 2 cents.

    starcraft 2 anyone?

I used to be a high masters player (top 300 in EU) a year or so ago before GM league, but quit due to work. But have been thinking about coming back for some HoTS action. (I main Zerg hehe!)

I’m also a high-elo player on LoL EU server, and am currently contemplating leveling up here in China. (Managed to make a character after a bit hassle with the ID system and am level 6 ATM.) My chinese skills are non-existant though atm so communication is hard, not that it really matters at pre-30. ; )

That is maybe you think they will refuse you .Or you want a stable relationship from the begining.

    I wouldn’t say that.

Generally speaking I know what I want from a romantic partner, and if I’m friends with someone, I usually know them well enough if they have that or not.

Also, rejection is something I’m not afraid of. I’m fully aware of the fact that, even though I might find someone attractive and like their personal traits, the person at hand might not have the same feelings for me. Truth is, if you are a person who actively seeks girls to hook up with, (like I used to do) you will hit by rejection more often than not.

This is an age old question. Can people of the opposite sex truly be friends without ever feeling something for each other at some point?

In my experience, the answer to that question is yes, I have (girl)friends that I haven’t even thought about dating, even though I find some of them attractive. Where it gets complicated is that, even if I feel that way, there’s no guarantee that she feels the same. She could be completely in love with me, which, well, would complicate our relationship a lot. Of course, the opposite can happen as well. I might have a huge crush on a girl, but she might just see me as a friend. (The friend zone!)

In my personal experience, if the girls are slightly older or younger than me, what will usually form is some type of pseudo ”brother sister” type of relationship.

To me, based on what your writing, it sounds like your way past that point. You no longer see each other as ”just friends”, you already seem to care for each other at a romantic level. This is

    of course natural.

And yes, many romantic relationships do begin with friendship, in fact, many people think that the best relationships begin that way, since you already are comfortable with each other.

Only you can decide what to do, you could essentially just friend zone him and say you want to simply stay as friends and force it over your own feelings and his, which might be painful but worth it in the end. Or you could just cut him off completely, which of course will be painful as well. Or maybe just go for it? Dunno!

    Just my 2 cents.

Hey again! Decided to bump this thread instead of creating a new one.

I’m arriving in Chengdu 24th January. I had some “issues” with getting my visa. I could only apply for 30 days and had to book a ticket out from China. I was even called to the backroom when I arrived finally to pick my visa to clearly explain what I was going to do in China. (Note I’m applying from Japan, aka not my home country.) The guy I spoke to was nice though and he explained that they are tough on visas at the moment due to the elections and powershift.

So, now I have a ticket to HongKong which I’m hoping I won’t need to use. 😉

Anyways, I came up with some other questions regarding China:

    1. Insurance, I currently have an travel insurance from my country, but it will expire soon. Should I get a Chinese insurance? If I manage to become a student on a student visa, can I get some type of a student insurance?

    2. Phones and providers. I currently have an iPhone 4 with no provider, the problem is that the phones battery has gone to shit basically so I was thinking about buying a new one with a Chinese provider. How are the deals in China? In my country, you can get the latest phones like iPhone 5 SGS III and Lumia 920 for 300 or so RMB / month with internet and certain amount of free calls. The contracts usually last 1-3 years depending on the price. Is there anything similar here in China?

    Appreciate it!

Rofl. I love the brutal honesty.

Anyways, good thread, I’m arriving here soon myself in order to study so I’ll definitely use the tips in this thread. 🙂

Hey guys! Thanks to all of you for the buttload of useful information. Really cleared up some of my concerns that I had. I will probably arrive sometime in January or February. I’ll try to arrange my tourist visa to be as long as possible.

Can’t wait for the language barriers and bureaucracy! 😉 Part of the adventure.

    Again, thank you.

    Hey!

Yeah, there sure are. Though considering the forum I’m posting this in, the idea is that I will enroll to one in Chengdu. I’ve looked at Sichuan Uni, UESTC, SWUFE, and Uni for Nationatilies. Emailed a few places, haven’t gotten any responses sadly. Frankly, my foremost concern isn’t really which school to go to – rather how to make sure I get into one and that how I can do so before I get kicked out of the country. 😉
