Deodorant! Haha, actually I’m not sure if this is still true, but it definitely was last time I was in China (a couple of years ago). Also shoes, I wear a US Men’s 11 and couldn’t find shoes for the life of me last time I was there. Ended up wearing tiny sandals to the shower with one toe hooked in. Clothes are cheap in China compared to Western countries, and markets abound in the cities, so whatever you aren’t terribly attached to you could probably afford to leave at home (and skip the plane overage fees).

Anyway, I’m not actually in Chengdu yet, but I’ve lived in Beijing before and will be in CD at the end of February. I’m sure the folks who have been there a while can give you more in-depth advice!

What kind of work are you coming over for? First time abroad or seasoned traveler?

Ok, separated by planes, trains, and automobiles,

Chengdu is the next spot to slide under my bootheels,

and I’m a blind masseuse, can’t see it but I got a good feel,

got a feijipiao for a few mao, I got a good deal,

a steal, but no, visa man, i am not no crook,

I’m just an eager student, ink on my nose from in a book,

take a look, it’s clear as the sky once used to be,

that Chengdu Sichuan China is the place I got to be.

OK, thanks everybody. I’ll give some thought to bumping my price range up a bit; 1000 yuan is still ridiculously cheap by American standards! Glad to know that I’m not heading into something that’s insanely difficult.

Yeah, the “plain & simple” wording was great.

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture was “Why are African lions left outside when it’s snowing?” The snowballs were just adding insult to injury.

I’m applying for a tourist visa right now, yeah they say that it’s a recent change but they want a hotel and plane ticket, I’m guessing they don’t check up on this. Seems like they’re starting to crack down a little bit more on who can get a visa and how, or at least make it appear as if they are..

[Isn’t the University for Nationalities the one that moved to a new cmapus outside the city this Autumn? I might be mixing things up, but if it is you’ll be in one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever seen. Pretty far away from civilisation, though.]

I hadn’t heard this so I looked into it (Online, I’m not currently in Chengdu but will be for Spring semester). According to google maps, there are two campuses, one alongside the 1st ring road and another outside the expressway. Wikipedia says there is a 3rd campus outside the 2nd ring.

It could just be there’s a new campus but maybe they teach the foreigners out there? It looks pretty nice from the pictures on the web, but it would kind of whomp to be that far from the city center (15 km)..

I used Integrated Chinese, which from what I’ve heard is also what the Confucius Institute uses. It’s pretty good for vocab and grammar and each book comes with a character workbook and a set of CDs that are really useful for prononciation. Also, it’s broken up by levels into several books, the first level is pretty basic so that would serve your purposes.

I’m not sure where you could find one in China because I’m not yet over there, but I’m guessing you could find one online through means which are less *cough* legal in the US (tor*cough*rent).

Good luck on your language learning!

Sweet, I’ll be studying at the University for Nationalities next semester too! I know a little bit of Chinese, and used to know a little bit of Spanish too but recently it’s no bueno, but if you need anything I’m sure we’ll be able to understand each other. Your English sounds pretty good from your post, btw. You sound cool, hopefully we’re in the same class.

Hey, sorry if it’s bad form to advertise one forum on another, but there’s a really good post from a few years back about climbing in chengdu on gochengdoo.

Good luck! I’ll be in Chengdu in a few months, hopefully we can climb together.
