LiamParticipantQuote:Surprisingly, it looks like there are no obvious side effects to this practice.
I think there’s some debate as to whether the droughts of early ’09 and then the really early snowfall later that year had anything to do with cloud-seeding; essentially, if messing with the environment screwed up the climate short-term. It’s hard to make a strong argument to either point, because the climate is changing due to global warming anyway.
I was in Beijing in late ’09, and they definitely made it rain for National Day (early October), it dumped for about 4 days straight and then suddenly stopped the day of the event, and the sky was incredibly clear. Then in late October, the snow came on so fast that I have a picture of a rosebush still in full bloom in about 4 inches of snow. This in a city that gets about 6 inches of precipitation total outside of the summer months.

LiamParticipantAh, so this is what the firetrucks were all about last night. Hope people got out, I bought a router there last week and it was packed.
LiamParticipantHow good is your Chinese? You could get 2 two-bedroom apartments for what you’re suggesting, but you’ll save money if you use an agent in the neighborhood you’re looking in. Unfortunately most agents only speak Chinese.
LiamParticipantAnybody tried out the app Songza? It recommends playlists based on what you’re doing at a specific time of the day, and the playlists are really well put together. I can’t get enough of it, it gives you a huge variety of great music without having to interrupt whatever you’re doing to search for new songs.
LiamParticipantI saw this movie twice before I came over, definitely worth checking out. I saw Argo as well and didn’t think it was half as good, although I agree that Tarantino’s main editor dying led to it being about 25 minutes too long.
LiamParticipantI’m now a member! So I’ll probably be there all of the time, lookin like a chump.
LiamParticipantQuote:Side note: I’ve been stuck with the ‘lingering’ cough again since Sunday afternoon. You know… the one that sits nice and low in your lungs and takes forever to cough up. Thank you China.I know exactly what you mean.
LiamParticipantQuote:Link here.Wow. Are those numbers the same scale that the US consulate uses?
@iameric: It looked pretty nice here yesterday as well, despite the pollution levels. I’m in the Southwest.
Quote:since farming is seasonal and ash can provide useful by-products for crops I guess it makes sense…It’s also the start of planting season so this does make sense.
LiamParticipantQuote:This site is great for bus routes. bus map Just click on the bus stop near your house and it will show you the route. For anyone who hasn’t checked this out, it’s a 3-d map of all of the large buildings in Chengdu, great for anyone who is new to Chengdu whether or not you speak Chinese. Still haven’t quite figured out how to use the bus route feature, my Chinese still kind of sucks…
LiamParticipantQuote:if the farmers are burning in the fields, the air would look brown like we’re in the middle of a habboo*Looks outside* Check.
LiamParticipantQuote:ya, with the sun starting to come out in force this week, i could be ready for a trip to a crag. time to get off the deck.I could do for getting out of the city sometime soon as well, the 污染 isn’t agreeing with me very well. It looks like from here that you can get a bus or some sort of set-price vehicle (whatever 小车 and 中型车, written above the map, means) for about 50 元 total. Of course, if somebody has a vehicle, that would be way easier.
Quote:If u’re climbing again these couple of weeks and want some diversity (ie. female/ chinese, haha) let me know. Not a great climber but just wanna do some indoor sports and rebuild some strengthEverybody’s been really friendly the times that I’ve gone, I’m thinking of getting a membership and will probably go Tuesday and Thursday evening this week. Plus there’s a guy named Ray who works there and is studying climbing at University (not sure what that means) and acts sort of as a coach/building routes.
LiamParticipantIf the figures are jumping all over the place like they seem to have been, that doesn’t sound like an average from multiple sources. Could be that one of the nodes is corrupted and giving really high numbers and they just haven’t fixed it yet.
LiamParticipantHa, Beijing’s only at 284. Suck it!
LiamParticipantI’m in as well. Say around 530-6?
LiamParticipantYeah, I`ve gathered that as well, although I read that there is a semitrad crag outside the city about 1.5 hours. I’ve got some training to do before I’m ready for anything substantial, though.
LiamParticipantI brought some gear with me as well; 2 sets of nuts and a set of cams, some slings.
LiamParticipantHey, is this still going on? I went today, albeit in the afternoon, but would love to meet up with some other climbers.
LiamParticipantThanks for everybody’s advice and ideas for stuff to bring! Glad to see that dental floss is now more popular, I had a really hard time finding it a couple of years ago in Beijing.
