You’d enroll in the school here and get your paperwork, and then do a HK visa run, pretty easy but probably run you about 2-3k RMB. Just FYI, if you decided to work on a tourist visa over the summer and got busted, they’ve raised the fines so it’s pretty expensive, plus you get deported and there’s a ban period of 1-10 years, although people still do it.

There’s still a ton of teaching work over here, especially now that some of the people on sketchy visa situations have been forced to leave, and you’ll be able to find work easily, but very little that gives you a visa. If you want a visa, Student X visas are still the easiest way to go, however if you want to come in June be forewarned that the new visa restrictions no longer allow switching tourist visas to student visas, so you’d have to take a trip to Hong Kong in August to get your visa stamped on entry.

Yeah, they’ve made it a lot harder for the cram schools to fudge things recently, although I’m sure it still happens. Classes are probably cheapest at SW University for Finance, SW for Nationalities, and University of Electronic Science – China, although Nationalities is most popular because it’s on the south side where most foreigners live. Still that’ll run you about 6K RMB (1000 dollars), although it’s possible to work now on a student visa with the new visa restrictions, and English teaching goes for about 150/hr, so a lot of students work part time and study part time.

I’ve only really played around on my phone, I’ve seen the guys in People’s Park play but similar to your response, the attention often shifts from the game to me and I feel a little uncomfortable. It’s a really fascinating game but I’m sure there are 10 year old Chinese kids that could beat me. Thanks for the info on the Sichuan Weiqi association, I’ll look that up and maybe take a class there to get my skill level up a little bit. Definitely drop me a PM if you find a person to play with, it’d be cool to see a real game played.

Jeez dude, 4 Dan? That’s burly, I’m terrible so probably not much help, I’d be down to come by and watch though. How long did that take you?

Probably not what you’re looking for but I’ve seen impromptu games pretty regularly in People’s Park, usually old Chinese guys but they seem to be into it..

Check out Cucas, that was how I applied and they make it super easy. Sichuan U is something more like 8K Yuan/Semester, SW for Nationalities is 6K and the classes are pretty comparable. Those 2 are probably the most popular with foreigners from around the world, SU the most popular.

Just FYI, the semester here ends around June and the schools all but close down during the holiday, if you come here around then it might be tough to get a visa then. It’s wicked easy to renew after 6 ms, you just pay and then go to the Public Security Bureau.

However, I’m not convinced (tho certainly open to some scientific studies being cited/linked to here) that these are going to really give you ‘clean air’

NASA, of all people, did a study about the effectiveness of plants on air pollution, seems like Chrysanthemum and peace lilies are pretty effective at filtering as well.

Yeah, looking at that Beijinger link it looks like that guy got deported for getting internet famous and not having a proper visa/working situation. Honestly, the same thing would probably happen in the US if somebody there illegally suddenly got a million youtube hits. Kind of a sad story, but at least I learned some new Chinese: 碰瓷, peng4ci2, hit porcelain, to fake an injury to get rich off the lawsuit.

It seems like everybody has been mentioning this event to me recently Furious debate sparked after Beijing expat hits woman in motorcycle accident, figured it belonged in this thread. LOL for “impeccable Mandarin” and also the anti-Japanese comments people made in response to an English guy.

Bought one this Sunday, had it Wednesday. 65 yuan for a 1-2 person, you’re free to it if you want to borrow it. There are also a ton of camping stores right next to Wuhou Temple.

I buy mine through Dianping tuangou, I think this might be what Charlie said, depending on what movie theater you’re at the tickets are around 20-25, if you wanna see 3D they’ll upcharge you about 5 at the movie theater. Sometimes you have to wait in line for a machine for the ticket, then go to the counter for a seat, but if you play the “stupid laowai” card you might be able to get the lady at the counter to give you your ticket and your seat all in one go. 128 yuan is robbery bro.

Yeah, you might want to try riding something slower here first, like a bicycle or more preferably an e-bike. There’s a saying about Chinese driving, I can’t remember exactly but its like: trucks can do what they want, buses follow the trucks, cabbies follow the buses, and everybody else is terrified of a, b, and c. To add to what Charlie said, literally everyone in China learned to drive within the last 20 years, in 1990 there were basically 0 private cars, so everybody still sucks at driving (except bus drivers, they’re freaking amazing). This is why you’ll find that everybody is constantly honking their horns.
From my understanding, inside the 3rd ring road the letter of the law is they will crush your motorcycle if they catch you, but for that to happen you have to either screw up or piss someone off, or just find a pissed off cop. Outside of the city, bikes are awesome, the reason I know all of this is I am also planning to get one and cruise around the mountains. I’ve heard of some people getting licensed but that the proper plates are more expensive than the bike, that regardless you’re still breaking the law riding in the city anyway, and that nobody outside the city is going to care more than they will care about getting you to pay a small *cough cough* fee, on the spot of course.

Second to what Charlie said, I studied at the SW University for Nationalities and it’s a good deal for your money. Lots of our students were previous students at Sichuan University and said that the programs were pretty comparable, except that Sichuan U’s classes are absolutely packed every day, 30+ students minimum. Not sure what your level is from studying on your own, but the entry-level classes average 20 students, higher levels are fewer, maybe ten students per teacher.

That being said, Sichuan U is a good place to meet people, there’s at least 1000 other foreigners there and it’s more in the heart of the expat/bar scene than Nationalities. Nationalities is in the Tibetan quarter tho. Here’s the website I enrolled through, they do a pretty good job but once they get you enrolled you’re pretty much on your own, you won’t talk to anyone at the university until you’ve got feet on the ground.

富二代 vs. the Laowai’s. God tier fucking thread.

Foreigners are accustomed to seeing problems and saying “Hey, that, I don’t like it” which brings about discussion, debate, and critical analysis.

Coming on an expat forum and complaining about foreigners in China is, in fact, complaining about China. Spend enough time in America and it starts rubbing off on you.

I like so many others on this forum have been in China a long time and have come across a few “locals” who have gone to the U.S. or Canada for a few years and then returned to China feeling superior to most Chinese and victimized by most foreigners.

Knew a guy like this in college, minus about 1/2 of the vitriol. Dude could party twice as hard as any of us and spent like it was Monopoly. I wouldn’t have called him chill, but of course we hung out with him, who the fuck doesn’t like money?

Party on Lawrence, keep on keepin it real. Just take it easy with the lollers, those guys can turn you into an asshole.

There are a bunch of guitar and instrument shops around the music school, just a little West on the first ring road from Sichuan University. I bought a guitar there for 500 Yuan, nothing fancy but it would tide you over. You can get small guitars for even less.
